WE MADE IT! AND LET'S KEEP GOING!!

Huge thanks to all those who have helped us reach and now surpass our goal of raising $7000 to print and distribute the first batch of The Gandhian Iceberg. As explained below, one of the main reasons Be the Change is co-publishing this important book with our friend, Chris Moore-Backman, is our shared desire to deepen our commitment to gift economics. Money coming in beyond the $7000 goal will enable us to make more copies of The Gandhian Iceberg available at a reduced rate or at no cost, for folks who would otherwise struggle to afford it.

The Great Turning is an all-hands-on-deck enterprise, and we want anyone who's interested in the power and potential of integral nonviolence to have access to this powerful new resource. So by all means keep giving, and keep spreading the word about The Gandhian Iceberg and this campaign. And remember, contributing to the campaign is a great way to pre-order the book. THANK YOU!

~

"Beautifully written. . . masterfully painting the depth and breadth of an integrated, principled approach to change. A timely and much needed call to nonviolent arms!” Kazu Haga, Kingian nonviolence trainer and founder of East Point Peace Academy

The Be the Change Project is proud to team with our dear friend, Chris Moore-Backman, to co-self-publish The Gandhian Iceberg: A Nonviolence Manifesto for the Age of the Great Turning. The book faces the current climate change emergency and the intensification of social crises around the world, and calls for an as yet unseen convergence of a small number of serious, spiritually-rooted US nonviolence activists to form the nucleus of a social change movement unlike any seen before.

"An engrossing manifesto. Chris Moore-Backman's careful and imaginative examination of Gandhi's teaching yields an impressive, compelling call to nonviolent struggle. Readers who resonate may realistically prepare for direct action." Kathy Kelly, founding member and co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence and author of Other Lands Have Dreams

The Gandhian Iceberg presents a bold, new interpretation of Gandhian nonviolence from Chris's rare perspective as a writer, nonviolence scholar, and frontlines practitioner. The book approaches radical social transformation and its realistic requirements, with a blend of personal testimony, artistic creativity, and vision. It's written from the heart, and it poses a timely, powerful, and fascinating challenge.

"Moore-Backman's project is at once both sweeping and eminently practical, and it takes on its formidable goals with compassion, lyricism, a vast knowledge base, and a lot of heart. Full of nuance and insight, The Gandhian Iceberg is a searing call to action in the face of global crises -- and a fascinating read, to boot." Maya Schenwar, editor-in-chief of Truthout and author of Locked Down, Locked Out

The Gandhian Iceberg is just about ready to hit the press! As this Kickstarter campaign goes live the manuscript is in its final editing stage. By the second week of June the book's notes, index, and interior design will be finalized. Then, with your help, it will go to print!

Chris invited us to team with him to self-publish The Gandhian Iceberg for two primary reasons. First, contracting with a publisher would mean that the book would become available up to a full year from now, whereas self-publishing will bring the book out within a month's time. The climate emergency, which is the consequence of manifold social justice emergencies, requires immediate action. Many readers (ourselves included) of initial drafts of Chris's manuscript have encouraged him to get the book out as soon as possible so it can contribute to the vital conversation currently underway about what kinds of action are needed now, and what role disciplined nonviolence practitioners might play in the unfolding struggle to turn the Great Turning. Second, self-publishing will enable Chris - with our help - to make copies of the book available on a gift economics basis, meaning that those who aren't able to afford the book at list price can get it at whatever price they can afford. By supporting this campaign, you'll be supporting an experiment in gift economics publishing!

"I first sat down with The Gandhian Iceberg at 8:30pm, intending to read for a half-hour or so. It was 3am when I turned the final page. That's how good it is." Jim Douglass, Catholic Worker and author of JFK and the Unspeakable

Chris fundraised to support himself and his daughter over the course of the past year, while he wrote the manuscript of The Gandhian Iceberg. We're happy to now join him in this Kickstarter campaign to get the book over the final hurdle. Most of the folks who have assisted Chris with the project (consulting, editing, graphic design, and artwork) have done so for free, or very much on the cheap, and one supporter assisted Chris with a $3000 interest-free loan. The $7000 we hope to raise during this campaign will enable Chris to break even on all that's happened up to this point (including paying back the 3K loan), and will allow us to print a first batch of 500 copies of the book. It will also enable us to make dozens of those copies available at reduced or no cost for those who would otherwise struggle to pay for it.

This is an excellent and critically important book. Please help us bring it into the world!

Sincerely,

Katy and Kyle Chandler-Isacksen

Be the Change Project, Reno, Nevada

Further praise for The Gandhian Iceberg:

"I've been waiting twenty years for this book. Concise, in depth, and challenging, The Gandhian Iceberg reweds strategic and principled nonviolence, to unveil the unimaginable power and potential of integral nonviolence. Chris Moore-Backman, courageous practitioner and brilliant scholar both, lays out a clear and full effort response to the current world emergency. (Incidentally, if the ideas and invitations in this book were not terrifying its subject would not be integral nonviolence.) I encourage us all to read this seminal work and put its wisdom into practice immediately. It can help us transform fear into an unstoppable force of love and action." Ethan Hughes, co-founder of the Possibility Alliance

"A powerful exploration of how people today can relate to nonviolence and how nonviolence today can relate to the urgency of our time. The Gandhian Iceberg lays out the costs of staying on the sidelines and the exhilarating potential of individual and collective nonviolent transformation. The stakes could not be higher.” Kit Miller, director of MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence

"Chris Moore-Backman has plumbed the depths of integral nonviolence to create a vital roadmap for cultural and ecological transformation. This is a crucial book for a crucial moment in history."  Tom Benevento, founder and co-director of New Community Project, Harrisonburg, Virginia

"In the year 1930, in the part of the planet we call India, 78 people with a deep personal transformation practice skillfully changed the course of humanity. Now, Chris Moore-Backman is inviting us to tap into that same immense source of courage, wisdom, and compassion to ignite a movement of movements for the liberation of the Earth. A much needed adaptation of integral nonviolence today and a must read for any citizen of the world in the 21st century." Pancho Ramos-Stierle, full-time ServiceSpace volunteer and co-founder of Casa de Paz, Oakland, California

"Chris Moore-Backman has done a job I’ve wanted someone to take on for years. The Gandhian Iceberg grapples in earnest with the legacy of Gandhi’s life and thought to begin to answer the question of our times: is there a nonviolent path to a livable future? Practical and visionary, anyone in whom lives the fire of making the world work for all of life will find companionship, solace, and challenge." Miki Kashtan, author of Reweaving Our Human Fabric: Working Together to Create a Nonviolent Future

Risks and challenges

The Gandhian Iceberg: A Nonviolence Manifesto for the Age of the Great Turning is just a few weeks away from being self-published. Kickstarter encourages everyone who launches a campaign on their platform to be transparent about any potential obstacles or risks that potential donors should be aware of that might somehow impact the chances of the project being seen through. This project is so far along that we hold no such concerns. If we reach our goal with this campaign, the books will be printed by IngramSparks, and, after that comes the next challenge: for us, at Be the Change, and for Chris Moore-Backman, to distribute the book as widely as possible without the benefit of the infrastructure and resources that publishing companies enjoy. But we have the heart and the network of support we need to make this happen. Stay tuned for a new website www.gandhianiceberg.com to serve as a hub for the book and its distribution, and please let us know of nonviolence-oriented organizations, teachers, and activists who might help us share this important resource. Together we'll make this happen!

Thanks again, so very much, for your support!
