Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! We've carried out hundreds of tests in a wide variety of natural and artificial lighting conditions to assess Canvia's display and user responses. We found that we needed to make these real-time dynamic adjustments to the digital image in order to maintain the appearance of authentic physical art - not only in 'favorable' conditions (e.g. midday, consistent overhead lighting) but also in more extreme scenarios (e.g. dawn and dusk, inconsistent light sources and positions, etc.).Last updated:
Canvia differs from digital photo frames in many ways.
1) Digital photo frames do not include an equivalent to Canvia's proprietary ArtSense technology (i.e., ambient sensor or data analytics, dynamic image processing) that adapts the appearance of the displayed images to maintain a realistic and impactful appearance in all settings.
2) Digital photo frames are designed solely for displaying digital photographs, whereas Canvia’s focus is on enhancing the experience of all types of physical art (including photographic prints) by preserving details such as texture, color, contrast and even brushstrokes.
As such, displaying paintings on a digital photo frame will not achieve the amazing realism of Canvia - and potentially even adversely affect the appearance and remove details through oversaturation, excessive backlighting, etc.
3) Most digital photo frames are not linked to a curated content library, as with Canvia.
4) Canvia is interactive and provides unique options to enhance the art experience: caption overlays about a work and an image zoom/repositioning feature to reveal greater details.Last updated:
We already have thousands of artworks in our online library, covering a wide variety of genres, styles, eras and media. This library is growing every day, so by the time we ship we expect this number to be much larger.
All backers pledging for a Canvia will receive access to the free tier of our library and three months of our premium tier. The free tier includes works across a wide range of genres and styles to ensure diversity of content; a lot of these are based on partnerships with established galleries and museums throughout the world (e.g. the Met, National Gallery, Rijksmuseum, etc.), which gives us access to amazing works throughout art history.
The premium tier contains works from current, active contemporary artists, illustrators and photographers (both established and emerging), again across a wide range of genres, styles and media. The fact these artists are currently active means we can look for works of topical relevance and explore the latest ideas in art.Last updated:
You can upload any digital image to Canvia via the app, web interface, USB or microSD. We'll provide image specs to ensure what you upload fits the display and looks as good as possible.Last updated:
Canvia's sensor technology does not specifically detect whether or not someone is in the room or looking at the device; it is designed to detect immediate ambient conditions and use this data to adapt the display in order to maintain a realistic appearance.
However, in practice when no one is around at night (e.g. all lights are switched off), Canvia will automatically switch off. This is part of the realism of our product - in the same way you wouldn't be able to see an actual painting in the dark, you shouldn't be able to see an artwork on Canvia!
Canvia can also be scheduled to turn off at certain times.Last updated:
Protecting the security and privacy of our users and contributors is a foremost priority for the Palacio team.
The Canvia device, app, cloud and user accounts are all part of a secure and closed system. This is both to protect user data and the IP of the artists in our library (e.g. at no point will users be able to download a digital copy of an artwork to potentially print out or otherwise misuse).
Canvia does use sensor technology to read information about the surrounding environment, but no images, video, audio or otherwise human-readable or identifiable data will be used or stored. User preference data for artworks (e.g. based on their selections or inferred from ambient data) will only be used within the secure and closed Canvia system.Last updated:
Canvia has primarily been designed to be mounted on a wall, for which we have included two slots (for portrait and landscape orientations) and support for an adjustable VESA mount. Canvia does not include a tabletop stand with the current set of offered accessories but is sturdy and well-balanced and so free-standing. We will plan to add a tabletop stand depending on the demand.Last updated:
As per our current planning, we are not considering a separate remote for Canvia. Alongside app control via a phone, Canvia can also be controlled via the web account or voice-enabled devices such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.Last updated:
The relationship between art and sound is a strong one. Canvia does not currently include a speaker but it's great to hear from the Kickstarter community that this feature is of interest as a way of further enhancing the experience of art - we'll be collating additional feedback on this and investigating as part of our future roadmap.Last updated:
