I am presenting for the first time ever, this 4-day jazz trumpet training and history consortium (June 15-18, 2015) in the namesake of a famous jazz musician - brilliant trumpeter Clifford Brown - something that has never been done prior. Brown, a highly influential African-American trumpeter of the 1950s, ranking with the best of his time - Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Fats Navarro and Clark Terry, to name a few - hails from Wilmington, DE. After releasing a series of monumental recordings with bop drummer Max Roach and others (over just a three year span), he perished in 1956 in an automobile accident at the tender age of 25, cutting a tremendously promising career short. His recordings are still studied to date and his model continues to be the gold standard for most of today's jazz trumpeters. People MUST be informed about Brown's legacy of music!
The consortium, held in Wilmington, DE, features four outstanding and renowned jazz teachers and trumpet artists (Terell Stafford, Greg Gisbert, Brad Goode and myself, Al Hood) instructing attendees in jazz harmony, theory, tune learning, transcribing and performance over four full days. Additionally, attendees learn of Clifford Brown's history and influences; visit the neighborhood he grew up in, the school he attended and the venues in which he played. Enjoy a screening of the new Brown documentary "Brownie Speaks" with filmmaker Don Glanden, Wilmington native. Nightly 'jam sessions' plus a moving musical graveside tribute at the Mt. Zion Cemetery are a few of the attendee performance outlets. I have arranged for Brown's only son, Clifford Brown, Jr., to join us daily. The seminar culminates with a free public performance by attendees, faculty and a local jazz rhythm section. The Clifford Brown Performance Space of the Christina Cultural Arts Center in downtown Wilmington is our proud host. Benefit from this exhilarating, exciting and quite unique event!
I have been educating people on Brownie my entire career (I have taught trumpet and jazz at the University of Denver for 16 years), and for the first time ever, with this consortium, I am able to educate individuals personally and directly on the far reaching influences of Clifford Brown, and share my research and passion regarding this phenomenal trumpeter and his music. Additionally, being able to train future jazz trumpeters in this performance tradition is our obligation to younger generations and is essential for the growth and continuation of our uniquely American art form called jazz. My vast research and performance training to date is meaningless, left unshared or isolated. It is imperative this information is offered in a forum precisely tailored to inform attendees on the specific merits of Clifford Brown. Doing so in Clifford's hometown is a special thrill, allowing attendees to experience first hand (and literally touch!) some of what Brownie did as he came up the musical ranks and flourished. Much of the East Side neighborhood where he grew up remains virtually unchanged.
Your contribution partially supports the consortium venue rental, faculty travel and fees, lodging and per diem, copying, printing, advertising and obtaining a local jazz rhythm section and will be in the form of student scholarships that will offset their attendance cost.
HELP an aspiring trumpeter achieve the next level of artistry they are striving for, and in turn help our American art form, JAZZ, prosper!
Risks and challenges
The venue is reserved and the faculty are holding dates, so most everything is a clear go! Given that lack of funding is overcome, one of the potential obstacles I can foresee might be making sure ALL of the faculty and guests arrive safely and on time. I will be arriving ahead of time, so that is one way I plan to meet any challenges such as that head-on! Being "in place' early, I will be able to troubleshoot any difficulties and solve any issues that might need addressing. The other logistical item is getting all of the participants to Brown's grave side efficiently...I have investigated proper public transit there and am also attempting to organize ride shares amongst the attendees.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
