In their first book, Lord Reese and Cerberus Reeves set out to solve a murder. Their inquiry brought them to Victor, the capital of Victoria. Their investigation was put on hold when they became the targets of a group called the Fresh Wounds , a group of genetically altered criminals keen on creating chaos.

Reese and Reeves takes place in a world where countries have been replaced with time period specific versions. England is now Victoria, a country full of Steampunk elements, stuck in a unending Victorian era. Another example is France, which is now Baroque, a country full of parties and grandeur. Following this theme, we have the United States of America as the States of Era, taking in elements from multiple time periods.
Scabs, Scraps, Skyrats, and Remnants
Decades ago during the Uncivil war, the Victorian empire developed a technique called 'Scabbing'. The scabbing process takes animal traits (claws, scales, gills) and grafts them to humans. However the process often leads to insanity. Test subjects that lived through the process were called Scabs. There is no known way to undo the process. Due to this, the Victorian government pays a pretty penny to newer, younger test subjects, called Remnants.
With mass production becoming simply, the thing, and exporting becoming more important everyday there are factories opening up all over the empire. And with these factories comes cheap labor...child labor. Quite a few limbs were lost, only to be replaced with mechanical ones. These limbs were originally designed for war vets as an alternative to scabbing, becoming a Scrap is just as painful. However, neither Scraps nor Scabs are despised as much as Pirates. While trade has moved to the skies, so has piracy. Pillagers known as Skyrats plunder airships and steal merchandise.
