FIRST EVER EMILY THE STRANGE ANIMATED SINGLE It is time for the ultimate DIY girl to do-it-herself (with all of you!)
For 20 years, Emily has been perpetually 13 years old, and it’s now 2013! How strange is that? Emily the Strange was originally created for T-shirts and skateboards, but quickly grew into short stories into comic books into novels…and now MUSIC!
Emily the Strange is not your average thirteen-year-old girl. Princess pink is her worst nightmare... She wears the same black dress every day... She loves math and science as much as playing music and skateboarding. Her best friends are her four BLACK CATS.
After 20 years as the hero for outcasts, Emily the Strange still promotes the ideals of “Be Yourself, Think for Yourself, Do it Yourself.” Emily is so anti-cool, she's cool... a subculture of one, and a follower of no one but herself.
Did we mention she LOVES CATS? Yes, we did... Her cats are crazy fun (as most cats are) and they have similar personalities to Emily herself: independent, night creatures, fiesty, could take or leave humans for the most part... Meet her 4 cats: Mystery, Miles, NeeChee, and Sabbath...
Emily loves Rock n Roll. Her musical tastes are eclectic; from old rock and punk, to electronic, free jazz, and alternative pop music. She is the only non-human to have her very own custom Emily the Strange Epiphone guitar. She’s published dozens of conversations with her favorite rockstars like Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance), Marilyn Manson, Iggy Pop, and Karen-O. It’s clear she owes a lot to the Rock Gods...
Emily the Strange also has a feature film in development with Universal Pictures, and merchandise distributed in over 50 countries including 4 young adult novels published by Harper Collins, 18 comic books published by Dark Horse Comics, Nintendo DS and iOS video games, fashion apparel + accessories, and fine art.
A muse for art and fashion, Emily has inspired designers ranging from Victoria Beckham to Marc Jacobs – appearing in a wide range of trend and fashion retailers throughout the world.
The newest Emily the Strange comic books published by Dark Horse Comics are aptly titled, Emily and the Strangers. In this series, Emily put's together her band and learns to work with others. This comic book has helped breed the idea and concept to form a REAL band.
EMILY AND THE STRANGERS LONG-TERM VISION
Our Vision for EMILY AND THE STRANGERS is to make Emily and her band REAL... and give her a real voice that sings, rocks, and is alive. Of course by “alive” we mean animated… Her entire WORLD animated: her radical inventions bubbling and chain reacting, her cats pawing and meowing, her guitars and modified amplifiers screeching… With the creation of the band, we also introduce to you all: NEW CHARACTERS. After this first song is finished, we plan for regular releases of music with accompanying animations. Once we have enough songs under her belt, we plan to go on tour. Yes, see her live, as a hologram.
WHAT KICKSTARTER WILL FUND:
This Kickstarter fundraiser will cover the costs of all recording, mixing, and mastering of the music, and ANIMATION of the first ever Emily and the Strangers single. This will be the first ever "official" release of an animated Emily the Strange rocking out (complete with her cats rocking out inside her crazy studio). This release also will mark the first ever release from Emily the Strange’s own record label, Strangerous.
To finish the song, we will be working with Grammy award-winning Producer, John King on the final recording, mixing, and mastering. To create the animation, we will start by story-boarding out our concept for the animation. Rob Reger, Buzz Parker, and Ghostbot Studios will be creating a lot of art, so we feel comfortable offering some of this to the kind supporters of the campaign for specific pledges. After the story-boards and concept drawings, we will create an animatic or test animation, and we will keep you informed of the progress along the way. This campaign will also fund the pressing of the limited edition vinyl for this first release (custom etched art on the B-side) and all of the other unique rewards for those who pledge. If we reach any of our Stretch Goals, we will complete 4 more songs and release a 5 song EP.
If we raise $70,000 we will record a B-side to the single.
If we raise $85,000 we will release a 5 song EP with all songs available to pledges above $10 and up.
If we raise $95,000, the first 1000 supporters over $20 will get a PICTURE DISC version of the 5-song EP.
If we raise $120,000 we will take a survey and animate the most popular song on the EP.
WE NEED YOU!
This is a unique time and opportunity to help us literally kickstart Emily's band and Emily the Strange as a fully animated character. It has been a LONGTIME DREAM of Rob Reger’s to release music and animation for Emily the Strange.
Through her music and animation, we hope to expand the reach of her brand to further the empowering message of celebrating and expressing the unique qualities that reside in us all. The time is now.
Perhaps you have read her novels and love the character, now see her and her world in FULL glory. Perhaps you know Emily and her cats from her comics, now see all that strange come to life! Perhaps you love Emily the Strange merchandise- now get your hands on some stuff no one else in the world will be getting! Maybe you are being introduced to Emily and her strange world now for the first time- get in on the ground floor and have bragging rights about seeing it and helping it from the start. Everyone who donates will get something cool that they helped to create. Imagine what you can help start here that could grow to her band performing live and hitting the road to a rock n roll venue near you!

Risks and challenges
Risk 1) To produce this project, we have tried to keep the amount of money we need to raise to the bare minimum. Our budget basically just covers costs. If we are over budget, we'll be paying out of pocket to cover those additional costs.
Risk 2) If Comic Con does not secure a panel at Comic Con for Emily the Strange, we will have to secure an alternative venue in San Diego during Comic Con for the premiere of the song and animation. This might be hard to do last minute, and will be an added expense. However, at 5 of the last 6 Comic Cons, Emily the Strange has successfully secured a panel for the show.
Challenge 1) Perfecting the voice of Emily herself (as it will be the first time she officially speaks... well, sings to her audience.
Challenge 2) Setting up digital and physical music distribution beyond the Kickstarter campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
