The New England Traveler is a pilot for a new travel & lifestyle television series. Discover the "spirit of New England" each week.
The New England Traveler is a new half-hour travel & lifestyle program that I produce and host. Armed with nothing more than a camera, a microphone and an open-minded curiosity, I set off each week in search of interesting and unique people and places that make New England one of the most beautiful, historic and inspiring places in the country. It started many years ago. Sitting in my Los Angeles apartment, a couple years removed from graduate school I was watching an episode of the popular PBS program California's Gold with Huell Howser. It was simple and effective and it told a story that you wouldn't find anywhere else. I imagined how cool it would be to travel New England with the same sense of wonderment to discover the "spirit of New England". It took some false starts and ego-crushing meetings with station managers in the Boston area before I finally decided to just "do it". In 2009 I grabbed my credit cards, bought some camera equipment and traveled to Boston to shoot my first 10 "webisodes". I called it iGetNewEngland...the spirit of New England Travel and Life. Its a few years later now and I have decided that it is time to take my project to television. In order to accomplish that, I produced a short video "sizzle" reel that you will see as part of my Kickstarter campaign and I wrote a pretty lengthy business plan/series proposal detailing how I am bringing this weekly series to television and what it will be like once it is on the air. I am negotiating a time buy on a major cable network in New England to broadcast the show and I am aggressively calling and reaching out to corporate sponsors on a daily basis to seek the majority of funding for my series. Television is expensive to produce and it is certainly not free to broadcast. I am negotiating with several corporate sponsors to accomplish that goal. The funds I receive from Kickstarter backers will be used to produce the "pilot" episode and get it on the air. If I am successful in raising more money then I will produce more episodes which will make an even better case for corporations to get involved.
If you are interested in reading more, the following is a brief synopsis of the series I wrote as part of my proposal for corporate sponsors. (Yes, we are still actively seeking those folks) I hope you enjoy it.
The New England Traveler is coming to television and it’s bringing with it a welcoming and knowledgeable voice, and a sense of all that is unique about this region. The New England Traveler delivers a genuine New England perspective that is beautiful, heartening, and of the moment. Each episode will contain three segments designed to reflect the ever-changing beauty of the region. From features on regional travel to food and wine and lifestyle stories, the series will be produced to present New England on a new stage. Hosted by the ever-affable Greg Boghosian, a Massachusetts native whose love for the people and places of New England runs deep, this half-hour series, The New England Traveler, takes viewers on a fun, high-energy journey of discovery into the historic heart of America. Guided by Greg, the series explores the six-state region known as New England, one of the most diverse, culturally rich areas of our country. Greg, armed with a camera and an open-minded curiosity, reveals why so many people from near and far come back again and again, and why those who live here plan to stay. Each week, the series will take us on an exciting journey from stunning skyscrapers to haunted mills, from a summer blueberry festival to Colonial battlefields. Greg lets New Englanders tell their stories first–hand, bringing past and present to life in a fresh, new way. It’s the people that matter – their lives, their points-of-view, and their stories. In each episode, this special spirit – what we call the spirit of New England – shines through. Forged during the birth of our nation, it is responsible for the fierce independence and entrepreneurial energy that characterize those that live and work here today. It’s also what makes this series heartfelt, inspiring and entertaining. Viewers of all ages get a taste of that spirit and a look at the awesome beauty of the region, its depth of history, and the warm, approachable attitude of the people themselves, which is mirrored in our host. Your guide is Greg Boghosian, a native New Englander and most curious traveler. So get ready to rediscover the birthplace of America. Sit back, relax and experience original stories from The New England Traveler every week.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Filming any video project is expensive, time consuming and risky but I strongly feel that I have mitigated those risks to the greatest extent possible. My background as a producer, director and writer over the past 20 years has made me extremely resourceful. When I first decided to set off on my own and produce this New England based series online I had very little money to start..almost none! I think that if you visit iGetNewEngland.com or find me on YouTube you will find that the short episodes I have produced are of very high production value. The video sizzle I produced for this Kickstarter campaign was also done for no money....literally! I hope that it serves as an example of the quality of my work and I also hope that it inspires those who watch it to share my vision for this potentially great weekly series. Obstacles will arise during production. But whatever obstacles come up, I am confidently prepared, whether they be a delay due to weather, or if one of my crew fails to show up to work. Kickstarter will enable to me produce a full program on a real budget. That is a big deal! I am very respectful of my backer's money and I will do my very best to produce a program that is worthy of every dollar.
Funds raised on Kickstarter will be used to produce a minimum of one pilot episode of the series and process all of our backer's rewards. Any funds left over will go toward producing an additional episode or episodes.
The New England Traveler is a weekly half-hour series. In order to fit into a 30 minute television slot, the pilot will need to come in at 22 minutes in length.
You mentioned in your proposal that you are seeking corporate sponsors. If that is the case, why do you need me to back you?
Fundraising takes time. As we kicked off our Kickstarter campaign no corporate funds have been committed. We are using the money raised here to get into production while I continue to try to get companies to commit to funding an entire season of episodes.
I am negotiating with a major cable network in New England to carry my series. I am very hopeful that our series will premiere as planned in January 2014 on that network. Before the series premieres on air it will be available exclusively to our backers on the series website. Details to follow.
I am developing several story-lines for season 1. The premiere episode story is being determined right now. I will follow up with details as we get closer.
