About

It’s exactly fifty years since Bruce Tulloh broke the record for running across America. He died in April 2018 and as a family we thought republishing Four Million Footsteps, his account of that run, would be a fitting tribute to this slight but indomitable man. Bruce loved going on an adventure let him share his greatest one with you.

The original book, often described as “the greatest running book of all time”, is long out of print. If you are lucky, you may be able to find a small, battered paperback copy online (and it won’t be cheap!). Our new 50th Anniversary Edition will be a handsome thread-sewn hardback, beautifully designed and made, with 184 pages on substantial paper, printed and bound in Italy by specialists in high-quality book production.

Additional material in the new edition includes

  • a foreword from Olympic gold medallist David Hemery CBE
  • a new overview of Bruce’s development as a runner from childhood onwards
  • new and previously unseen photographs unearthed from the family archive
  • extracts from the transcontinental log book that evidenced his daily progress (lost for thirty years, it reappeared at Bruce’s memorial)

The book is 90% ready for press. We now need your help to make it a reality. Read on for more about Bruce and the story of his run, or scroll right down to find details of the many ways in which you can support this project, secure your copy of the book, and win exclusive limited-edition rewards.

When Bruce Tulloh retired from international athletics in 1967, he had won gold over 5,000m at the 1962 European games, run a sub four-minute mile and broken the British record over three and six miles. His diminutive frame and habit of running barefoot had made him a popular figure although Olympic glory had evaded him, (heat stroked hindered him from qualifying for the final in the 1960 games in Rome, an attack of measles ruled out Tokyo.

At 32, faced with the prospect of the Mexico Olympics being run at altitude, he decided to call it a day. Ironically what he chose to do instead was far more challenging. In the Guinness Book of Records Bruce chanced upon the world record for running across America, at that time held by Don Shephard who had done it in 73 days.  Breaking this, thought Tulloh, would be “a piece of cake.” The reality was a little bit tougher. Bruce trained for the run whilst working full time as a teacher, fitting in runs on the way to and from school and doing longer runs at the weekend. Although an experienced athlete he had never run more than 23 miles in one stretch.

Four Million Footsteps is a detailed account of that run, a run undertaken with not that much knowledge of what lay ahead each day. It was far from plain sailing — on the first day he suffered violent cramps in both legs and passed out. He recovered to run on that day but was soon crippled by injury and after ten days was reduced to walking with a stick. Slowly his body adjusted to conditions, helped by his indomitable will, and by the end he was up to running 40 miles a day — “a running machine” who ended the run in better shape than the beginning.

Brendan Foster, speaking on Radio 4 about watching Bruce win his European gold medal in the 5000m:

“I was only a fourteen-year-old schoolboy athlete at the time. I was out playing football and my father called me to watch the event with him. There was this tiny figure in bare feet running distant and alone from them, the spotlight on him in this dark and dingy stadium. It was a great moment for me.”

Patrick McGee, ultra runner and San Francisco correspondent for the Financial Times:

“The Hollywood version of Bruce Tulloh’s run across America in 1969 comes to us via Forrest Gump, whose smooth, meditative journey brings him hordes of followers ready to take his throwaway lines as distilled wisdom. The real story, as told by Tulloh in Four Million Footsteps, is so much more complicated, illuminating and amusing. His story is one of solitary endurance, mental agony and physical exhaustion, with none of the fanfare seen on the silver screen. When he finishes the 2,876-mile journey after 65 gruelling days, he is greeted by a single photographer. Any runner interested in the story of pushing physical and mental limits will love this endearing book, told by a witty Brit who considered himself ‘basically a lazy man’ who had never run more than 23 miles at a single stretch before this historic episode.”

Jojo Tulloh, former competitive runner, writer, and editor of the 50th Anniversary edition of Four Million Footsteps:

“Like many small children I thought my dad was amazing; when I was old enough to measure him against the rest of the world, I found out he really was. Whilst I was a little foggy about his international athletic career, I always knew about his record-breaking run across America. There is something mind boggling about the scale of this endeavour. That’s even before you know the details. This is the joy of Four Million Footsteps — it turns the statistical feat that is running coast-to-coast into a daily event you can share (without the agonising muscle pain) as you cross the vast expanse of America, step by step with Bruce. If you’ve ever dreamed of going on an epic trip but never got around to it, then reading about how the germ of this preposterous idea turned into reality through months of planning and training will bring a vicarious thrill. It also shines a light on a vanished world, small-town America at the end of the sixties. For ultra-runners this book will be a bible; for the rest of us it’s an inspiration, an escape from the everyday and proof that with enough willpower you can overcome any odds.”

You can help by

  •  simply pledging some money, as little or as much as you can afford — every penny helps
  •  ordering your copy of the book, which will be sent to you hot off the press, for a special early-bird price of £12 (against the £15 RRP)... your book will be sent out to you as soon as it is received from the printer, and only a limited number of copies are available at this price
  • for a little more, your copy can be signed by all of Bruce Tulloh’s support team on the run — his wife Sue, son Clive and cousin Mark — who crossed the continent with him and kept him on the road to success
  • you can also pledge more in return for some specially created, limited edition rewards (see details below), including the chance to spend time with Bruce’s son Clive, running with him on the beach that was Bruce’s most beloved training ground

or

  • you could become a sponsor of the project, in return for a mention on the cover of the book and space for a Sponsor’s Preface in the book itself, as well as 10 copies of the book, signed and individually dedicated by Bruce’s support team

Everyone who pledges more £20 or more can have their name printed in the book itself, included in a list of Supporters or Bronze, Silver and Gold Patrons.

The Kickstarter needs to  raise approximately £10,000 for us to realise this project:

  • £7,500 will allow us to print and bind 1,000 copies of this book to the very best quality. This print-run makes the most sense, allowing us to deliver a well-made and beautiful book that can be sold at a competitive price.
  • Kickstarter take commission and fees, typically amounting to around 9–10% of the total funds raised.
  • The rest will go towards producing the rewards that we are offering as incentives, and packaging and shipping the books and rewards to those who pledge for them.

So our fundraising target of £7,500 is less than we need – but achieving it will mean we can afford to go ahead, in the hope that future sales will cover any shortfall. Everyone involved is working on the project for free, and we need to raise a significant proportion of our costs in order to make the book a reality.

Please understand that this is an all-or-nothing appeal. We must exceed our fundraising target in order to receive the money pledged. If we don’t meet the target by the closing date, no money will be collected from pledgers and we definitely won’t be able to print the book. So every contribution will be really valuable in bringing the book into the world.

If we exceed our target, we hope to completely cover our costs, and even partly compensate some of those who have worked on the project for free (making a book takes a lot of time and effort, as does the administration of this Kickstarter).

If we do really well, we may also be able to

  • print more copies, meaning the book is less likely to go out of print in the future (the fate of the original 1969 edition)
  • enhance the production quality of the book, perhaps using heavier paper, considering ‘deluxe’ cover treatments such as embossing or foiling, or including more extensive picture sections
  • give all pledgers a little extra reward, as a thank-you for your support, which we will announce as soon as it looks like the campaign is going well

All contributions will help ensure that this fine new edition of Bruce Tulloh’s legendary running book will be reprinted in this, the 50th Anniversary year of his record-breaking run. Pledge £20 or more and your name will be listed in the book itself as a Supporter, £40 or more and you become a Bronze Patron, £100 or more earns a mention as a Silver Patron, and £400 or more wins you the title of Gold Patron

Save £3 against the RRP of £15 and receive your copy hot off the press, before it’s made available to the general public. Only 200 copies available at this price. Once they are gone, you can still pledge for a copy at the full price. Pledging in this way, rather than waiting for the book to go on general sale, will help guarantee that the book gets made.

Signed by Bruce Tulloh’s support team on the run — wife Sue, son Clive and cousin Mark. Your name listed in the book as a Supporter. This has proven to be a popular choice, so we have increased the number of signed copies available at this price to 100.

Save £6 against the RRP cost of £30, and save on shipping costs compared to pledging for two copies separately. Only 100 copies available at this price. Once they are gone, you can still pledge for two copies at the full price. Pledging in this way, rather than waiting for the book to go on general sale, will help guarantee that the book gets made. Your name listed in the book as a Supporter.

Receive two books, signed by Bruce Tulloh’s support team on the run — wife Sue, son Clive and cousin Mark, and save on shipping costs compared to pledging for two copies separately. Only 50 signed copies available in this way. Your name listed in the book as a Bronze Patron.

We have created three limited edition prints from archive images of Bruce Tulloh’s record-breaking adventure. Each is a fine-art quality giclée print on 300gsm paper, approximately 30 x 21cm, produced in an edition strictly limited to 25 copies. Plus a signed copy of the book. Your name listed in the book as a Bronze Patron. Make sure you choose the image you prefer when pledging.

As a way to certify his achievement, every stage of Bruce’s run was entered into a log book, with locations and times of arrival and departure signed and witnessed by everyone from motel owners to the Mayor of New York City. We have created a 36pp facsimile of the log book in a strictly limited edition of only 10 copies. Pledge £60 or more to receive this, in addition to your signed copy of Four Million Footsteps. And your name will be listed in the book as a Bronze Patron

The support car driven by Bruce’s cousin Mark on the run was decorated with a large hand-painted canvas banner. We have recreated this as a 420 x 210mm fine-art print, Riso printed in 4 colours on  Colorplan 270gsm in a strictly limited edition of only 10 copies. The image even includes the green 1¢ stamp, stuck on the banner at some point during the trip by Bruce’s son Clive. Pledge £100 or more to receive a copy of this print in addition to your signed copy of Four Million Footsteps. And your name will be listed in the book as a Silver Patron.

Instow, in North Devon, was Bruce Tulloh’s home for many years, and remained his favourite place to run and train for the rest of his life. Here is your chance to run on the same beach with his son Clive (himself a competitive runner in the past, and still not bad today!) followed by dinner at a restaurant overlooking the beach in company with Clive and Bruce’s wife Sue. Pledge £400 or more to win this reward, which is offered to only three supporters (each of whom can bring a companion with them for the run and/or dinner). You will also receive two signed copies of the book. A convenient date will be mutually agreed with Clive and Sue. And your name will be listed in the book as a Gold Patron

If you are able to offer really significant support to the project by pledging £1,000 or more, you will receive the following rewards:

  • your name or your company’s name and logo on the back cover of the book
  •  five copies of Four Million Footsteps, signed and individually dedicated by Bruce Tulloh’s support team on the run — wife Sue, son Clive and cousin Mark
  • the possibility of purchasing further copies of the book at a deeply discounted price
  • Recognition as a Gold Patron on the Thanks pages of the book

If you wish, then your support at this level will be prominently acknowledged on this campaign page (together with a logo if desired) as soon as your pledge is received. This opportunity is limited to a maximum of three sponsors

NB: If you would like to contribute £3,000 or more, please instead opt for the Lead Sponsorship Opportunity (see following).

Become a lead sponsor of the project by pledging £3,000 or more, virtually guaranteeing its success. In return, you will receive the following rewards:

  • your name or your company’s name and logo on the front cover of the book
  • if desired, your text, in the form of a Sponsor’s Preface, will be included at the beginning of the book
  • ten copies of Four Million Footsteps, signed and individually dedicated by Bruce Tulloh’s support team on the run — wife Sue, son Clive and cousin Mark

This opportunity is limited to a single lead sponsor

If our campaign is successful and we reach our target, we want to recognise everyone who has made a special contribution. We will list our supporters in the Thanks pages of the book itself.

  • If you pledged £20 or more, you will be listed as a Supporter
  • £40 or more, and you become a Bronze Patron
  • £100 or more: Silver Patron
  • £400 or more: Gold Patron

However, we will have very little time between the campaign ending and our deadline for sending the book to the printers in time for pre-Christmas delivery. When your pledge is collected, you will be asked (by email) under what name(s) you would like your contribution to be recognised on the Thanks pages. If you don't respond quickly to this request, then there may not be time to include your name. Similarly, if you do supply your name, it will be printed exactly as you supply it to us, so make sure you check your spelling very carefully! We’re sorry, but we won’t have the time or resources to chase up names or confirm spellings back to you.

The prominence, position, typesetting and design style of Sponsors’ and Lead Sponsors’ names, and/or logos on the cover of the book will be at the discretion of the publishers. Of course we will work with you to achieve a satisfactory result. Similarly, any Sponsor’s Preface text will be subject to our approval.

Risks and challenges

Our designer/publisher has worked in book production for more than 30 years, including as a graphic designer responsible for the creation and production management of many bestselling books and high-circulation magazines. He has overseen the production of countless publications, from small personal projects to complex commercial titles, with print runs from 10 to 500,000 and is familiar with every stage of the process. There are always challenges in making a book, mainly to do with (a) ensuring that printers execute the author and designer’s intentions and specifications to the highest possible standard, and (b) that they do so on time and on budget. Our designer/publisher will be physically present on press when our new edition of Four Million Footsteps is printed and bound, and has planned an adaptable production schedule that allows generous contingency for unforeseen problems and delays. His experience and efficiency should ensure that the book is made to the highest quality and delivered on time to you, the backers whose support will allow it to be made.
