One of my favorite memories growing up was getting to travel on Bob Dylan's personal bus for an entire west coast tour. My dad brought me along, I was only 8 years old. It was so cool pulling into venues and running around backstage as a kid. I remember watching movies in the back of the tour bus while Bob and the band would come in and plan the set list for various shows. I loved hanging out with Bob and Tommy Masters, his bus driver and my dad. I look back on that time as a very surreal experience.
My father Victor Maymudes was Bob's friend and tour manager. He met Bob in 1960. In 2000 my father signed a publishing deal to write a biography. The publishing deal was for one book about his life and travels with Bob. In the middle of writing the book he suddenly passed away in Santa Monica California. The book was never completed. But, with your help, I can pick up where he left off and write the rest of his amazing story.
As luck would have it, my father recorded hours and hours of stories and events that he experienced throughout his life as a friend and tour manager. It's these very same audio recordings, over 24 hours of which that I'm going to edit, re-arrange and transcribe into a linear, tangible and extremely exciting story to read.
I'm very excited to start writing full time, I've also recruited the help of my mother Linda Wylie who edited and wrote Above The Clouds: Anatoli Boukreev's biography, winner of the Jon Whyte Award for Literature. She's an accomplished author and she'll be my editor and mentor. She also has her own amazing stories to contribute from living at Dennis Hopper's house in Toas New Mexico in the 60s and hanging out with Sara and Bob when they were together.
Below is a chapter outline and eight page excerpt on the famous first meeting with the Beatles. This excerpt will become part of chapter 6 in the book.
Why Kickstarter and not a regular ol'publisher?
I approached my father's literary agent and his publisher and it became very clear to me that if I went the traditional publishing route my fathers voice might not be heard the way he wanted to tell his story. I would also lose control of the design of the book, cover artwork and how the digital book would be created. I also want to do the audio book narration myself. Kickstarter is the only place to be for artists and creators who want to maintain creative control and perfect their work. Which is why I'm looking to you to help fund the best possible book I can write from my fathers legacy.
What is funding being used for?
The self-publishing process is tricky. I'm teaming up with a book publisher that will provide an ISBN assignment, Copyright Registration and many distribution channels. But they require a hefty fee upfront, approximately ten to fifteen thousand. On top of that I have to purchase all of the reward books in advance. The bulk of the funding will go directly to that. The benefit of this is I retain full control and my fathers story is told his way in his voice.
The remaining funds will go to licensing photos, paying for interviews and travel budgets as well as research and office space.
Why now and not 12 years ago?
I've only recently been able to come to terms with my fathers death, I'm surprised it didn't take me 30 years to get here.

Risks and challenges
Paying for the licensing of images to include in the book is a huge hurdle. For instance, the cover photo for the book could cost upwards of ten thousand dollars in licensing. So most of the funding raised here will go toward that. Navigating legal channels is also a risk and challenge. The other huge expense is contracting a publishing company to handle the book printing and distribution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
