Songs without Words takes the adaptation of 17th Century songs for instruments as its point of departure and brings the concept into the 20th Century with torch songs and jazz standards arranged and improvised by the ensemble. Music by baroque composers Lambert, Lully, and Marais is heard alongside tunes by Nina Simone, Errol Garner, Edith Piaf, and others in this program of timeless melodies and inspired improvisations. Cleveland’s Plain Dealer commented, “Mixing old and new numbers freely, the ensemble liberated the music of both eras, creating a kind of conversation across the centuries.”
Creating Songs without Words has been an incredible journey. What started out as an opportunity to reestablish a 17th-century solo repertory for woodwinds became so much more when we adapted the flexible “voices” of our period instruments to more contemporary music. We’ve been inspired by Bruce Haynes’ observation that “authenticity is not a product of the instrument being played, but of the musician’s sense of style. Style originates, of course, in the player’s head (and/or heart).” We hope that our performances onSongs without Words combine written and improvised music in ways that we hope feel authentic and fresh.
We’ve performed this program almost 15 times now and audiences have universally loved it! Audience members have consistently commented that the interweaving French Baroque airs with 20th C torchsongs makes them hear ALL the music differently.
Last September, we spent 3 days recording Songs without Words for our 4th CD, with the help of a fantastic, GRAMMY-winning production team in Oberlin, OH.
We’ve invested $15,000 in the project already and are looking to raise the last $4,000 to help with licensing costs for the songs still under copyright, final design and photography, and finishing manufacturing in time for release on the PARMA/Navona Label in November 2018.
Les Délices’ Songs without Words has been brought to live by a fantastic international team of artists with a proven record of creating unique, original projects at the highest artistic standards.
We hope you’ll join us in helping to bring these incredible, beautiful performances to a wider audience! Every gift makes an impact!
