About this project
Many of you know me as the music director of the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra: the BCCO. I’d like to tell you about a great project we’re starting with the orchestra and New York City School students. The orchestra is just completing our 10th anniversary season of performances all around Brooklyn, from Crown Heights to Brooklyn Heights, and, this summer, we’ll be performing in Washington Park by the Old Stone House.
and Music Partners...
What you might not know is that I have another – alternate - identity –I am also director of the Brooklyn Conservatory’s Music Partners Program. For almost 25 years, the Conservatory has been providing music instruction to New York City School kids. This year, we’re working with more than 4,000 students in over 30 sites in Brooklyn and in Queens. We teach music for early childhood, we teach older kids band, strings, guitar, and percussion.
Well, all of this got me thinking. Could there be a way for the kids in our public school programs to collaborate with our wonderful orchestra? What if the bcco were to commission an orchestra piece featuring some of the amazing middle school percussion classes? Could we ask a fabulous composer and percussionist like Harris Eisenstadt to write a piece like this? What if the music were kind of jazzy and funky, and had room for improvisation? What if we could perform this piece in the auditoriums where the kids go to school? So I asked Harris… and he said yes!
With your help...
I’m hoping that the idea of getting NYC kids performing some thrilling music with our community orchestra is as exciting to you as it is to me. I’m going to try to raise $6,000 in the next month, to cover the cost of the commission fees and the instructional time of our teachers working with the kids. We’ll have some great gifts for all of our contributors, including concert tickets and signed CDs of the performance. With your help, we can make this project come to life. You can contribute at any level, and any amount will help us! Thank you so much!
