About

I have a unique opportunity to attend The Photography Master Retreat in the South of France during the summer of 2019. I am one of 14 photographers invited to workshop my project with three master mentors for a week in the village of Esparon. The purpose of this Kickstarter is to raise money to cover the $3,300 fee for the retreat (including food and lodging etc.) as well as airfare to France.

However, this is also a kickstarter from my project about my dad. As you may already know my father Doug passed away when I was young. For the past few years I have been slowly beginning a very long project concerning his time in Japan in the 1970s. Here is a brief description of that project:

This group of images represents the very beginnings of an extended, research-based project concerning my father and his time in Japan in the 1970s. My father passed away in 1995 when I was quite young, I have always felt the main thing I lost was the chance to know him from an adult perspective. The retracing of his footsteps as a young man through a foreign land is an excuse to build for myself a more full and adult portrait of a man who I still understand as a child.

Through letters, postcards, and old photographs I am rebuilding a long-forgotten period of his life so that I may build a portrait of him, have a fight with it, and make amends all in the confines of the project. His mistakes, biases, and misunderstandings from 1973-74 are my truer window onto a parent who I have only been given the most shining memories of.

This is a gigantic opportunity for me to take this project into its next phase. I am so embedded into the story itself, that it is nearly impossible for me to step back and see the project as a whole. I lack the artistic and photographic community I relied on in school, and as I think about starting to make new images to communicate with the found images I have, I need that outside criticism to do this project justice. I ask for your help to achieve this goal, to attend this retreat, and to move one step closer to completing what will likely be the most important project I ever undertake.

Risks and challenges

The greatest unknown in this project is the possibility of a dead end, or many dead ends. Reconnecting with my dad's life in Japan after more than forty years is a challenge. At any point, I may find that an important link has disappeared in one way or another. However, I am confident that this story is waiting for me to unravel it. I am reassured by connections I have already made, most importantly with Takatsune Nakamura, the once young man, now Chief Priest of The Kasuga Shrine in Nara. Takatsune was my father's host-brother in the Nakamura's house where he lived.

(The LAST) FAUXASIS Towel in The World

I produced towels for my Graduate Thesis Exhibition titled "FAXUASIS" in 2016. These towels feature yours truly in the desert with plastic palm trees and the title of the show in tropical pink letters. These were for sale at the closing of the show and were given to select family and friends. Now you can have the very last one, I will never print any more of these.
