About

Imagine that you could reposition your lights at any time with a remote control.  It’s a decorator or entertainer’s dream.  Motorizing our accent lighting seems obvious to me.  After all, we use motors to move our car windows and mirrors.

The idea was originally intended for retail where they are consistently changing displays every few weeks.  With my patented Tessa motorized lighting system, anyone can quickly and safely adjust the lighting without a ladder.  It saves time, money, and you are free change the lighting instantly at any time.

Just a few years ago, ladders were needed all the time to replace lamps. Now you can install a remote controlled fixture with an LED that will last more than 15 years, and eliminate the ladder for good.  After all, no one wants to be up there anyway!

With Tessa, you can adjust the lights from the comfort of your couch without lifting a finger.  OK, maybe one finger.

How Does it Work?

Select and re-direct, that’s it.  Just point the laser at the lamp you want to move, then move it.  It really is that simple.  When the laser hits the small dome, it glows green, and that fixture will respond to radio commands. You can adjust more than one at a time.  When you are done, press the clear button, or wait for the 30-second timeout.  You can also de-select with the laser.

Aside from the Tessa, you’ll need to purchase standard MR16 lamps with GU10 sockets, and have Halo brand track installed.  These are readily available at your local home improvement store such as Home Depot and online Amazon.

Background

I designed my first motorized light almost 30 years ago while attending graduate school in London, then later patented the use of a laser to select each fixture.  Soon thereafter my company Loto Lighting was formed to manufacture, market, and sell affordable, convenient and safe lighting to the display industry, which includes retail, galleries, and hospitality.

After some initial success, we quickly learned that homeowners were also interested as the consumer marketplace had a similar problem that needed solving.  Considering that half of all homes built in the last 20 years have a great room with a 15-foot ceiling or higher, it’s understandable.  As a result, our home customers love the ease and convenience of motorized lighting, and some even say it is fun to use.

Before that, our team at Devlin Design has been responsible for several other successful product inventions such as the Lucky Litter Scoop Free Litter Box, which is a cartridge based system, and a headband that helps stop teeth grinding called GrindAlert. The Cyrano is on display at the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York.

 Status

All the fixtures and transmitters are built and in our office. The funds will be used to pay for the development costs, support operations, and pay for future production orders.

Safety:

Ladder accidents cost billions of dollars a year. I believe that if we make motorized lighting a standard feature, we will much safer in the future.

FAQs

Don't I need a controller for every fixture? You only need one to move any number of Tessa fixtures. When you activate a fixture with the laser, it will respond to the RF button commands.

What is the radio range? 30-100 feet

Can I move more than one fixture at a time? Yes, any fixture that you hit with a laser and illuminate its dome will respond to commands. You can select and de-select with the laser also.

Can they move in patterns? No. Tessa is intended for static lighting only.

Can I memorize positions? We believe that this would add cost and complexity to the system, so we do not remember positions.

Can they move along the track? Sorry, pan and tilt only.

Can I dim lights with the remote? No. This remote only moves the fixture.

Can I use my own laser pointer? The laser is modulated so that stray light does not turn on the dome. So another laser pointer would not work.

How long will the motors last? These are precious metal motors that are also used in door locks and other products requiring long term reliability. They are rated for 400 hours, but you probably won’t use them for more than one hour.

Is there an app? We designed for the non-technical person to quickly and easily readjust lamps. But we are working on a Bluetooth solution for future models.

Are these tested for safety? Yes. They have UL and FCC approval.

Are there other colors? Tessa is available in white and black only.

What kind of lamp does this use? This takes an MR16 size lamp using a GU10 socket. These are line voltage lamps.

Where can I get these lamps? We recommend 1000bulbs.com for a great selection, but they are available in hardware stores. Soraa is our favorite brand for the highest quality of light.

What kind of track does this use? Tessa is certified for Halo track; Model 641, 642, & 643 from Cooper Industries.

Where can I get this track? This is the most popular track in the US. It is available at Home Depot, electrical distributors, or on Amazon. It should be installed by a licensed electrician. Don't forget to order the live end feed.

Risks and challenges

We have 600 white and 100 black that we can ship right away. Beyond that, we will need 10 weeks lead time on back orders.
