About this project
Your dog is your best friend. A part of your family. You never want to lose them. Where’s Nellie™ means you never will.
3 Steps to Always Find Your Dog
1. The Nellie Beacon attaches to your dog's collar securely. The Nellie Beacon communicates up to 6 miles with your Nellie Base. The Nellie Beacon has batteries that last over a year and never needs a cell signal.
2. The Nellie Base plugs in at home. When you travel or your dog is missing, the Nellie Base can be charged in your car or any USB charger and has a rechargeable battery that will last over a day.
3. The WheresNellie app works on any Android or iPhone.
If your dog is missing, press the locate button on the app and in a few minutes Where’s Nellie will pinpoint the location of your dog right on your phone. If your dog managed to go beyond a few miles and goes out of range with your Nellie Base, the last location will be displayed on the WheresNellie app. Bring your Nellie Base to this location and re-acquire your dogs real time location.
How It WorksWith no buttons, no switches, no monthly fees, and batteries that last for over a year, Where’s Nellie ensures you never lose your dog.
We kept it simple because we wanted to be sure it works whenever you need it. Over 10 million pets are reported lost every year. No owner wants their dog to be one of them.
Way better vs. the competition
Where's Nellie was built to find your lost dog - always - without fail. The Nellie Beacon's batteries last over a year and it communicates on it's built in private network so no cell signal and no cell fees are required. Leading competitors have batteries that last only a few days and only work where you have a cell signal and when you have paid the cellular subscription fees.
Where's Nellie in the News!
The App in Action
While it’s just one button push to find your dog, Where’s Nellie does more than that. You can create ‘safe zones’ (geofences) which alert you if your dog leaves it. The app also talks to the base station by cellular and bluetooth, so if you are without cell signal, it doesn’t matter. Where’s Nellie can still find your best friend anywhere your adventures lead you both.
Why Did We Build It?
We knew building great technology wasn’t enough. Where's Nellie had to work wherever and whenever it was needed. If Where’s Nellie required constant recharging, we knew that when we needed it the batteries would be dead – because we’d forgotten to recharge the collar.
That wasn’t acceptable. Where’s Nellie solves this problem – it simply works. The Nellie™ Beacon's patent-pending technology uses ultra low power components and software to minimize battery use. The result? When you need to find your best friend, the Nellie Beacon will power up and send your dog's location directly to your iPhone or Android phone.
But Dogs Are Hard On Everything!
We started by over building EVERYTHING. The Nellie beacon had to go anywhere a dog went. Cold, water, heat, dirt, mud, and every shock imaginable. Over testing, we went from big and bulky down to slim and durable.
We sealed all the electronics and battery for the Nellie Beacon inside its saltwater– and dog–proof enclosure that easily attaches to any dog collar. You are never at risk of losing your dog. No hassle. No worries. Just carefree fun for you and your dog.
To achieve our goals of no Cell connection needed, no monthly fee, and 1yr battery life, we had to be smart about using technology and make the product itself smart. In fact, there is a computer in each part of where’s nellie; the Beacon, Base and of course your apple or android phone.
- Patent Pending design
- Computer processors in both Beacon and Base
- Selects lowest energy communication method
We built Where's Nellie to find your lost dog. Where's Nellie is easy to use and designed for reliability.
Should you be less than fully satisfied with Where's Nellie, we will happily take your return and fully refund your purchase anytime within a year of purchase.
Losing Your Dog is Devastating
We know, it’s happened to us, and we never want it to happen again - to anyone. That’s why we built Where’s Nellie. Please help us put Where’s Nellie into production by backing our project. Thank you!

Risks and challenges
We are far along in the prototyping phase. We have eliminated major engineering risk by finishing the Nellie Base and Beacon circuit boards. We have high-quality 3D prints of our product which already reflect the final specifications of the hardware.
The only risks that remain include obtaining the necessary regulatory approval in a timely manner and potential unforeseen complications with manufacturers of our electronics. During March we submitted our radio technology to an FCC certification lab for a pre-scan. The test showed that the signal complied with FCC rules regarding in band and out of band emissions. We feel confident that our device will be approved to operate in the US on schedule and have a long-standing relationship with our manufacturing partners, so we believe that this risk is also minimal and would result in a small delay in the worst case scenario.
Production Delay: We have chosen to manufacture Where's Nellie here in Milpitas CA, USA to minimize delays. We anticipate first commercial production beginning summer 2015 and first shipments to backers in December 2015. From our experience in commercial scale up and manufacturing, delays can occur but we will take steps to minimize this risk by working with known USA manufacturing partners who have done similar work successfully for us in the past.
Technical Problems we have not anticipated: We built the first prototypes of the Nellie System in April 2014 and are currently testing our 100th+ version. Testing verifies the targeted 1 year battery life and full functioning of the Nellie Base, Beacon, and WheresNellie app.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
