It's Time for Chapter 2!
I'm so excited to be back for the second book in this series! Last year, I successfully funded the Kickstarter for Chapter 1 with some to spare. If this is your first time seeing the Carefree, Like Me! series, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rashad Malik Davis, and I am your spirit guide on this journey. I’m a storyteller, illustrator, and a dreamer who needs your help to make this second iteration of my dream a reality.
What happened since you published Chapter 1: Root the Brave last year?
SO much! The book won the 2017 Best Indie Book Award for the Children's Category. It landed in physical Barnes and Noble stores. It's reached and impacted children all across the United States and internationally. It's landed me on TV with Della Crews of New Jersey 12, Princeton TV with Sharon "Lady Tea" Levy, and so much more. It's even sold over 600 copies and counting. Most importantly, however, it's helping me to do my part in making this world: a more diversely represented, caring, and loving place.
Awesome! So... what's this book about?
If you want to check out the trailer to the first book, please check out my website here! In this book, we join our incredible friends and the real magic workers of our story, Amir and Neena. Our friends completed their first task, restoring balance to Root the Brave's realm and releasing his fears. They’ve also learned how to face their own. In this second book, they meet another MASSIVE challenge! They must help Sacra, an abundance goddess who has lost her joy and thus her ability to create: wind, water, rain, and everything green.
Her once-lush rainforest home turns into a desert, and the kids have to help her get her smile back once more while also bringing life back to this now deserted realm!
Whereas the first book dealt with the emotion of fear, this book teaches children about how we approach sadness and the importance of community. It also teaches children about the incredible Ancient Aztecs!
What Inspired You?
As with the last book, I have always wanted a book with characters that looked like me and represented the varied world that I lived in. More than just characters that looked like me, what I really wanted to feel was validated. I wanted to be affirmed. I wanted to know that my story was worth telling. A glaring dearth of diverse characters in children’s entertainment and literature is what I am seeking to heal. My characters are all intentionally designed to not only symbolically represent contemporary and ancient cultures from every corner of the globe, but the spectrum of human emotion too.
With this book I want to introduce children, in a fun way, to methods and ways to deal with sadness. It's a normal and necessary part of our lives, but how do we cope? How do we understand its power and move through it in healthy, positive ways? This book explores that against the backdrop of the Ancient Aztecs and their incredible contribution to world history and modern Mexican/Chicano/Xicano/Indigenous cultures.
Where are my funds going?
Funds will go towards: the cost of printing high quality physical copies, paying the videographer, shipping books, and for the cost of supplies for rewards as well.
Any potential additional funds will go towards printing additional copies and the shipment of books. All funds will ultimately go towards helping to paint a more colorful tapestry of children's stories; one that you and your children will hopefully enjoy for years to come!
Risks and challenges
The only potential risk I foresee would be if there was an issue with printing. I am currently in the process of illustrating, working to make sure that the book is as visually stunning as it is entertaining. I will be finished by August, also partly because I need to not have the book finished in order to complete one of the rewards. It takes about 6 weeks from there to have them shipped to me, and then I will ship it directly to you! The books will most likely be in your hands by October. This will also be in time for my planned East Coast Carefree, Like Me! Book Tour!
The vast majority of the rewards, however, will be available far in advance and will be available to ship out if you so please. You will be given the option to receive them early before the book.
Barring any issues with the printing process, the risk for this project is very minimal. I've illustrated and written the entirety of Carefree, Like Me! Chapter 1, and I was honored and blessed to win an award for it. I am fully aware of time constraints and am very much ahead of my established deadlines. I've also worked with Mascot Books to produce Book 1, and they are an excellent printing and publishing guide and resource.
I will update backers with any potential issues that may arise, though currently I do not foresee any!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
