"You can't trust those 'bots. Androids just want us to think they are thinking beings, they want us to treat them like we treat each other, so that we wont see an attack coming. You give androids the right to vote, and they vote their kind into office the same day the death squads are formed. You think you can stop an army of metal men with plasma weapons built right into their arm?! Ha! And don't think those cyborgs are any better. They are just trying to become more android so they might be spared in the robot apocalypse. Traitors to their own species, all of them. Trust me, the moment you treat 'bots like they are human is the moment they take over!" - Speech given by US Senator during the 2112 election.

The Robotic Age is an action packed RPG of people trying to cope with the advancement of technology in the 22nd century.

The Game

The Robotic Age is an original rpg inspired by various action packed anime, movies, and video games. If you ever wanted to play a game as an android with a plasma cannon that he can charge to devastating effect, a cyborg who can run up walls in order to attack an enemy helicopter, or even just a human struggling against a robot uprising, then this game is for you.

You have full customization over your character, choosing what makes him good at what he does, what makes him better then everyone else, and what he's armed with.

Do you want to be able to turn invisible, have extensive knowledge of demolitions, and be armed with a grenade launcher? Do it.

Do you want to be a walking tank, bullets bouncing off your chest while you dual wield machine guns? Easy.

Do you want to have a jet pack, a robotic spotter drone, and a sniper rifle that shoots electricity? Done.

Just be careful, because even with all the options you are given, your gm is given even more. He's encouraged to create swarms of robotic drones, groups of deadly androids, or even giant death machines to send your way.

And that is just for individual encounters. Your group will still have to deal with human rights extremists who want androids reduced back down to mere servants. Or maybe you will make an enemy of the secret android society that is plotting to overthrow the world. Or maybe you just encounter the... thing that exists in cyberspace. The Robotic Age is a very dangerous place to live.

How You Play

The Robotic Age uses percentile dice (aka d100) for skills and a handful of d10s for damage. In this system you roll low for actions, like hacking a mainframe or hitting a target, and roll high for damage as you try to destroy your opponents physical structure or fry his internal core. As you purchase upgrades, enhancements, and even fighting styles, you will add a ton of new options and bonuses to your character

Your Character

As I said above you have tons of options when making your character but the most important one is picking your designation.

Android: You were built, not born. Originally designed for a specific purpose you have now hit the milestone all androids reach where they gain a sense of self and are considered sentient. You are your own bot now, and although you may not be considered human you are still allowed to live your own life.

Cyborg: Why be human when you can be something more. You have spent the last few years getting every cybernetic upgrade you could have ever wanted. You have so many robotic parts that you now have a power core installed in your chest just to keep it all functioning. And you wouldn't have it any other way.

Transhuman: Using the most up to date technology, you have successfully transferred your thoughts, personality, and memories from your old human body to a brand new android body. Sure, the technology isn't perfect, and there were some glitches during the transfer, but why let that stop you from immortality.

Human: You take pride in how human you have been able to remain. Sure, you might have the odd cybernetic implant here or there, but you didn't go crazy with it. You know who you are and you don't need metal skin to live your life.

Just as important as your designation is the weapon you are wielding. Either because you want a signature weapon for your character to use, or just because you need something crazy to attack people with, The Robotic Age allows you to make exactly the weapon you need or always wanted.

You build your weapon from the ground up, deciding it's effective range, how much damage it does, if it uses physical ammo or energy, if it causes horrible burns, or other elemental effects and enhancements until you get the weapon you want.

Do you want a sword of pure energy that swings so fast it's hard to dodge? Simple.

Do you want retractable claws that burn red hot and can be swung in a frenzy? Of course.

Do you want a shoulder mounted plasma cannon that can charge up its power to devastating effects?

You know we have that.
You know we have that.

All of this and more can be found within the book.

The Book

The book will contain everything you need to play and run the game, along with a rich back story and several short stories to help you know how the world has entered the Robotic Age and how people currently live in it. There will also be an introductory mission to help your players get a feel for the game, as well as a 100 weapon roll table so the GM doesn't have to create his own weapons for every enemy.

All the art in the book will be in black and white and done by Daniel Olsen. His other pieces can be found at http://weremole.deviantart.com/

Stretch Goals

  • ACHIEVED $7,000 - We are funded! Hooray!
  • ACHIEVED $7,100 - Every backer getting digital goods will receive a digital copy of The Robotic Age X customization packet.
  • ACHIEVED $7,200 - Every backer getting digital goods will receive a digital copy of The Robotic Age T customization packet.
  • ACHIEVED $7,300 - Every backer getting digital goods will receive a digital copy of The Robotic Age G customization packet.
  • ACHIEVED $7,400 - Every backer getting digital goods will receive a digital copy of The Robotic Age R customization packet.
  • ACHIEVED $7,800 - Ever backer getting a PDF will also get a free digital map from Fabled Environments.
  • ACHIEVED $8,000- The Cyberspace section in The Robotic Age is greatly expanded.
  • $9000- The expanded Cyberspace section gets art. Art is expensive, you guys.
  • $10,000- Every backer getting a PDF now gets a total of 4 free digital maps from Fabled Environments.
  • $11,000- If we hit this stretch goal I will promise to start a new kickstarter campaign in 2014 to fund the supplement book The Robotic Age: Mars. All the backers of this project will be the first to know when the new one starts.
  • $13,000- Every physical backer gets a free poster. If your tier already includes a poster then you can either get a second one or two patches (your choice)
  • $15,000- If we somehow hit this goal I will have enough to make the Mars book right now. Every backer receiving a PDF of the main book will also receive a PDF of the Mars book. Physical copies of the Mars book will be available as an extra add on.

When I first made this system it was to run other popular franchises that I felt needed their own system to represent correctly. So, the first few stretch goals will be Kick Starter Exclusive Customization Packets containing the slight rule changes and sample characters I used to run said popular franchises. These packets will never be for sale and will only be available to backers of this kick starter.

The Robotic Age X - This customization packet will explain how to run a game where everyone is an android trying to make the world a better place, despite being built by waring mad scientists.

The Robotic Age T - This customization packet will explain how to run a game where everyone is a giant robot from an alien world fighting a civil war. Said giant robots might also be able to change their form.

The Robotic Age G - This customization packet will explain how to run a game where everyone is a human pilot of giant robotic mecha flying around in space.

The Robotic Age R - This customization packet will explain how to run a game where everyday teenagers are given powerful suits that enhance their normal fighting abilities as well as giant robots needed to defend earth.

Free Digital Maps -  Have you ever noticed there are tons of maps of dungeons and forests and villages, but nothing good for more modern games? Well, thanks to the good people at Fabled Environments you wont have that problem when running The Robotic Age.

When we hit the first free digital map stretch goal, everyone who gets a digital PDF of the game will also get a free download of Fabled Environments' Arctic Research Station map to use in your games. This map makes a great underground bunker or secret lab.

When we hit the second free digital map stretch goal, everyone who gets a digital PDF of the game will now get a total of 4 free map downloads, including the Arctic Research Station, a Two-Story Warehouse, and others places that would make perfect hiding places for dangerous androids.

The Robotic Age: Cyberspace - Not quite enough for it's own release, but still more then I can normally include in the main book. If this stretch goal is reached the Cyberspace section already in the book will get greatly expanded, with more description on how cyberspace is used, more enemies, and new upgrades for everyone to take including the Transformation upgrade found in The Robotic Age T. I will also include a cyberspace focused pre-made adventure.

The Robotic Age: Mars - Now this one is the supplement book. The Robotic Age: Mars will cover everything you need to know to run a game in the martian colonies. New locations, new dangers, new enemies, new upgrades, new weapons, and new rules! Including the Mecha rules found in The Robotic Age G. Will also include a new pre-made adventure taking your group through the dangers of Mars.

Extras:

Sate your need for physical goods while increasing the overall pledge and getting us closer to stretch goals. Everyone wins!

If you want any of the below extras just increase your pledge by the listed amount and when the kick starter has ended I will send out surveys to find out what you added on and what size you need.

Extra Softcover - $35- Want another copy of the book? That's fine with me.

The Robotic Age T-Shirt - $15- This white t-shirt will have The Robotic Age logo on the front as well as a secret image on the back.

The Robotic Age Poster - $10 - This 14" x 20" poster of the book cover will look great on your wall.

Shell Collectors Patch - $10- Shell Collectors are bounty hunters specializing in androids and cyborgs. They destroy their target's body so they can't fight back and then turn the broken shell to authorities for repairs and judicial punishment. Proudly show your support for those who keep your city safe from renegade robots by wearing this patch.

Risks and challenges

The risks involved are very small. I already have the book written and it's in the process of being edited. The rules are long done and have been extensively play tested.
As this is my first professional project, I am not positive on all the production times and it might not be ready to send out in the month I mentioned, but I did estimate high to try and eliminate that possibility.
I have an artist on board who does amazing work and I have a guy doing all the editing, the layout, and the character sheet. But we are all human. Any of us can get sick or have personal issues that delay the project.
However these will all be just delays and nothing will actually cancel the project. If you back us you are getting your reward, even if it takes a little longer then I thought.
