Inspiration for Savino:
Fifteen years ago I opened our refrigerator to find a glass of wine sitting on the top shelf. When I asked my wife why she put a glass of wine in the refrigerator she responded, "I wanted to preserve it for later." And so began my journey to bring her Savino.
"The Tyranny of the 750"
As the years went by I often found myself conflicted when I wanted a glass of wine. I knew that if I opened a new bottle I would feel the pressure to drink more than I wanted or end up throwing good wine down the drain -- the tyranny of the 750.
I tried almost every wine preservation solution available. Virtually every solution on the market attempts to control the environment of a wine bottle by either removing air (manual or mechanical vacuum) or adding something (marbles, balloons, inert gas, etc.) to the wine bottle. I wondered, instead of trying to control the environment of a wine bottle, what if we put the wine in a new environment?
Creating a Great Product:
Great products begin with a great consumer experience, and this was our goal from the very first design meeting. We set out to create a product that was effective, elegant and easy-to-use.... and we succeeded.
Savino is Effective:
We conducted nearly a dozen blind taste tests of red and white wines from around the world. In each test we preserved open bottles of wine with several different wine preservation systems and then waited up to 16 days before tasting the preserved wines and comparing them to a newly opened bottle of the same wine. In every test, the majority of consumers picked Savino as the preservation system that did the best job of preserving the original characteristics of the wine.
Design & Function:
Being a great wine preservation solution was not enough. We also made sure Savino is elegant and extremely easy-to-use. We focused on every detail that matters to us and dozens of wine lovers we interviewed, including a drip free rim, a top that prevents accidental spills, the capacity to hold 750ml of wine and a design that easily fits in your hand for pouring and in most refrigerators for storing. We then package all of this beauty and function into a gorgeous retail package so the consumer has a great experience from the very beginning.
We have created two limited edition Savinos just for Kickstarter. First, you can choose to purchase one of the first 100 Savino's manufactured. These Savinos will be laser signed and numbered acknowledging you as one of the first 100 people in the world to own a Savino.
The second is a matte black version of the Savino. This is the same beautifully manufactured Savino but will come to you in beautiful matte black so you can display both your love of wine and your modern edge at the same time.
Specifications and Production Plan:
Each Savino is made of high grade flint glass and food grade plastic and silicon. Each Savino is about ten inches tall with a three inch diameter and holds 750ml of wine.
We have assembled an amazing team of designers and commercialization experts with over 50 years of experience bringing new products to life. Our team has engaged with glass, plastic and packaging manufacturers and we will use the proceeds from our Kickstarter campaign to complete the purchase of the required tooling and begin production by January 2013.
When you order a Savino you will receive one carafe, one oxygen limiting float and one sealing top. The three piece system is packaged in a gorgeous retail box.
Giving Savino as a Gift:
There are three beautiful Savino cards to our website at www.savinowine.com/give. With these Savino cards, its as easy as 1-2-3 to give the perfect gift for the holidays, a birthday or any other special occasion from a house warming to New Years. Here's what you do:
1) After you have ordered a Savino to give as a gift (see FAQ "Can I order more than one Savino?"), simply download the perfect card from savinowine.com/give.
2) Then, print the card, or send it electronically, to tell that very special person in your life that they too will be one of the first people in the world to own a Savino.
3) When you receive the Kickstarter backer survey at the end of the campaign, indicate that one or more of the Savinos purchased are gifts and then provide the recipient’s mailing address and we will mail the Savino directly to the gift recipient (or if you prefer we can mail the Savino to you and you can deliver it directly to the recipient).
The response to Savino has been incredible, thank you. We have just introduced two two stretch goals for this campaign
Goal #1: Laser Engraved Savino
If we meet or exceed $100,000, every backer will have the option of having their Savino(s) laser engraved with a single letter of their choosing. (Laser engraving is NOT required but will be an option for you to choose if we achieve Goal #1).
Goal #2: Savino Custom Wine Glasses
If we meet or exceed $250,000, every backer* will receive two custom Savino wine glasses. In addition, for every $45 pledged (not including shipping) above your original backer level, you will receive two additional wine glasses.
I hope you are as excited about Savino and these stretch goals and rewards as I am – we tried to create something unique and original to try and convey how much we appreciate your support.
More information on the stetch goals and rewards is available in this Backer Update: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1842583253/savino-todays-wine-tomorrow/posts/346063
We appreciate your support and together we can bring Savino to your table and end the tyranny of the 750 in style.

* To be eligible for the stretch goals / rewards a backer must pre-order a Savino
Risks and challenges
Manufacturing Savinos requires a multifaceted supply chain including glass, plastic and packaging manufacturers and logistics companies. We have built a team with nearly 50 years of product development and commercialization experience and have engaged the suppliers required to bring Savino to you. A final set of manufacturing partners is not yet complete.
Savino is a breakthrough product that requires each manufacturer to build new tooling to support this innovation. No challenges in manufacturing Savino at scale have been identified to date. It is possible that as that unforeseen challenges could delay the initial delivery date.
Finally, if we are wildly successful with our Kickstarter campaign...our fingers and toes are crossed.... then we may have to create multi-cavity tooling sets which could increase the time it takes to bring Savino to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
