“It’s one of the many laws of nature. ‘Run with your own kind.’” - Fat Pig
Theatre is one powerful tool. In an age where we solely communicate on devices at the palm of our hands, theatre is one of the best forms of art that brings us together. Theatre can transform you and strangers around you from a dark, quiet auditorium to a whole different world and can draw out many emotions from an audience. Art has the power to do so much more than entertain audiences. Art teaches us about human condition. That is why theatre is important. Because life isn’t about self-preservation, it’s about sharing and learning together. So, I’ve finally decided to produce one of my favorite plays, Fat Pig.
“Real people interest me. I really don’t have much time for fiction.” - Fat Pig
Fat Pig is a play by Neil LaBute that focuses on Tom, a successful, handsome business man who suddenly meets and falls for Helen, a plus size woman...which is out of the norm for him. Tom is then faced with challenges brought on by his slightly evil, but hilarious, co-workers that put Tom and Helen’s relationship to an ultimate test. This play is brutally honest, incredibly witty and it’s a different kind of love story. I especially love that Neil LaBute wrote the main love interest a plus size woman, instead of the “quirky side-kick friend” like Hollywood tends to.
Beauty is not a one size fits all sort of idea. Body image plays such a large part in society and has the power to influence people’s decisions. The media (especially social media) makes it easy for people to get caught up in what is considered “beautiful” and “perfect” or “ideal.” And when people see this topic online or in a magazine, they tend to start looking at what they don’t like about themselves instead of loving who they are and accepting one another. All four characters in this play are challenged with this topic and to see how they deal with it is extremely interesting and entertaining.
“You said she was a pig!” - Fat Pig
Just this year alone there have been positive strides in the plus size community such as Tess Holiday’s groundbreaking modeling success and Ashley Graham’s history making Sports Illustrated advertisement. But with all the positivity going on, there is still a fair amount of backlash toward people who are considered plus sized. That is why I’m producing this play. Not only is it a huge dream of mine, but this play also deals with what is a timeless issue: body image.
“Because I’m needy and shallow.” - Fat Pig
Currently, we have a wonderful team of people who are passionate about the arts and helping make this dream come true and we want you to be part of it too! Our team has the best theatre and business training from schools such as Stella Adler Studio of Acting, University of Southern California, George Washington University and we even have two different Broadway consultants! We cast 2 of the roles, we signed on a director, we selected a theatre in Brooklyn, and the publishing company has agreed to give our team the performing rights!
“I have honestly never been more relaxed around a person.” - Fat Pig
Now this is how you can be apart of this whole process, too! With a Kickstarter campaign, your pledges will go toward:
- Audition Space
- Rehearsal Space
- Lighting Design
- Printing Playbills
- Tech Supplies
- Rental Trucks
- and of course....The Theatre!
If you pledge certain amounts, you can choose to receive perks such as show memorabilia and even an Honorary Producer credit! We will ship these perks during the following weeks after the show’s closing date this winter. To make this project even more exciting, this will be an ALL or NOTHING campaign. If we reach our goal, pre-production starts right away and the show will open this winter! If we are even a dollar short, the production will be cancelled (and everyone will be sad!!!).
“How’s he gonna love something like that, get all sexy with her?” - Fat Pig
I’m a firm believer in creating your own opportunities and producing Fat Pig has been a huge dream of mine since I first read it in college and what better way to do this than include people that have inspired me to stop dreaming my life and start living my dream! Thank you all for taking the time to read and I hope you join us on this journey by becoming a backer and sharing this campaign!
“Don’t take a complete dump on your one moment in the sun...Not for somebody like her.” - Fat Pig
Risks and challenges
Producing a play takes massive amounts of work, late nights and early mornings, LOTS of coffee...but the team is willing to do what it takes to get the job done! Set pieces, costumes, props, lighting, audio, rehearsal space and the theatre must be paid for. Therefore with your help, we will be able to overcome these challenges and put on an incredible piece of art that will bring forth a topic that is very important to us!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
