C-Cup: 1 Year Later

Dear friends,

Kickstarter just informed me that our C-Cup campaign ended with success a year ago today. When I saw that I felt compelled to write this short note with one last update on the project, as well as my most sincere gratitude for your help.

When we set out on this project, we assessed that this was a relatively small need that nonetheless was worth doing. That was a fair assessment. It became worthwhile for me once I got the prototype on my own camera, and there were enough of you that Thomas and I turned a modest profit in the end. Far more important were the lessons I learned about converting a concept into a product, and then taking that to market. A few weeks ago I posted a short article about those insights, and if you are so inclined you can read about them here:
A filmmaker's Guide to Building Rockets

I still receive orders for the C-Cup (it's available for sale here), although it has slowed to a trickle and I now consider the project complete. We received many requests for a similar product for the Panasonic GH4, which my partner Thomas has taken on and will be finishing any day now. I have a prototype that does indeed improve the user experience. That should be easily adaptable to the Sony A7s, which we also received some requests for. If either of those are burning needs for any of you, feel free to message me and I'll put you on the list.

Aside from that and my day job as a cinematographer (keep an eye out for BARGE at a festival near you), I've turned all my effort toward a new endeavor called Dox, a platform designed to match resources and support with short documentary proposals. Shorts have always been my favorite format, and our audacious goal is to help make documentary filmmaking a viable career. We are in a beta stage at the moment, working with filmmakers to develop and refine the product so that it serves filmmakers however they most need it. So if you're into short documentaries, I urge you to get in touch!

That's all I've got! Thank you all so much for lending your support to this project. I truly enjoyed communicating with so many of my fellow shooters from around the world. I hope the C-Cup has been serving you well, and may all your shots be in focus!

With gratitude,

Andrew Miller

C-Cupdate #5

Dear friends,

I've spent most of this week sending out C-Cups and I'm a very pleased to report that I'm finished. As we speak there are C-Cups traveling throughout the world, and very soon there will be hundreds of happy backers - that I am sure of. Please let me know if there are any problems whatsoever. Also please let me know what you think of the C-Cup.

Since the campaign ended I've received many non-backer requests to purchase C-Cups, and now that I've taken care of you, dear backers, I'm going to open it up to the public. Our online shop is not quite fully set up yet, but if anyone asks you where they can buy a C-Cup, please direct them to this website:

I know, it looks like hell. Don't make fun of me.

Some of you are expecting more than one C-Cup, and you shall have them! It may be that you receive them on separate days, so don't be alarmed it you receive only one. If that's the case, the rest will follow in a day or two. It's not a very good mailing system I have here, but even at that it's a miracle if you really think about it.

Finally, there are a number of you who have yet to send me your address. Kickstarter will notify me when you do, and I'll get your C-Cups out to you just as soon as you let me.

Thanks once more to all of you for believing in our team. We nailed the product, we delivered on time, and we are all better off for it. I'm really looking forward to your reactions.

C-Cupdate #4

Dearest backers,

Great news: I've received a manufacturing sample of the C-Cup and I am very pleased. It fits our specs down to the molecule, and it functions amazingly well. I've gone ahead and requested the full shipment and will commence shipping to our backers very soon.

While we have been waiting for the arrival of the chamois and the actual C-Cups, we have gathered all of our packaging and shipping materials. Barring any unexpected challenges, I think we may have everything here as soon as next week sometime, and we will begin shipping to you just as soon as that happens.

I feel comfortable admitting now that I have been experiencing a bit of anxiety about getting these to you this month as I had originally estimated. Some 75% of successful Kickstarter campaigns ship later than estimated, and I was beginning to understand why as my inexperience gave way to the challenges of fulfillment. My partner and I stayed aggressive throughout, and now I feel confident we are going to be able to make it happen. That, along with my satisfaction with these manufacturing samples, has me feeling pretty good right now. I can't wait to hear your feedback on these, as I expect you're going to love them.

I'll be following this message with a survey so each of you can provide me with a shipping address (just as soon as I figure out how to send a survey through KS). I'll also send you a final C-Cupdate once we've got these things in the mail, and as always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

With gratitude,
