Who am I?
I'm Daniel, and it's about time for me to use my mechanical engineering degree for something I really love. I live in Utah and have a passion for riding dirt bikes. Once I purchased my GoPro camera, I couldn't help but invent custom fixturing to capture unique shots that no one else was getting. And today, I'm happy to introduce one of my favorites...the BoomPro.
What is the BoomPro?
Excellent question! Any amateur filmmaker knows that a good action sports video requires A LOT of different views. The more varied and unique the views...the better the video. Ever wonder how people get those epic 3rd person view GoPro shots of themselves? More often than not, it's a cobbled together system involving a stubby pole duct-taped to their helmet...no offense to duct tape. The BoomPro is a streamlined, simple, rigid system that makes those shots an easy reality. But enough talk...I'll let the picture speak for itself.
How does the BoomPro work?
I designed the BoomPro to be as functional and simple as possible. It also integrates perfectly with all existing GoPro fittings. The BoomPro attaches to a helmet using two GoPro Curved Surface Adhesive Base Plates. GoPro Quick-Release Buckles attach to the base plates, onto which the two custom parts are connected; the Extension Rod and the Support Fitting. A GoPro camera is then attached to the end of the Extension Rod. See diagram below.
The Support Fitting shown here has been modified to be a safer, "break-away" style, snap-in fitting (See Update #3). It can also slide on the Extension Rod to adapt to the curve and size of any helmet. This two-point mounting method achieves maximum system rigidity but also allows the user to easily remove and attach the BoomPro when desired. Remember: JUST BECAUSE I USE THIS FOR DIRT BIKING, DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO! The BoomPro can be attached to any style of helmet.
The initial prototype shown in the video and pictures was made using a manual lathe and small CNC mill. As higher volume is required, alternate means of manufacturing will be considered; such as water-jet cutting. It has been very fun to use and your pledges will help take this product to the helmets of many fellow GoPro'ers! Risks and challenges
The challenge that concerns me the most (but that I'm also most excited for) is high volume production. Initial prototyping was done using a small CNC mill and grinders for manual rounds on the Extension Rod. My processes will need to be streamlined and set up for high quantities instead of single shots. I will also need to eliminate any manual processes to achieve the finest machining surfaces on all rounds and cuts. Machining multiple Support Fittings out of large sheets, or sending them out to be water-jet cut may be viable solutions. Machining multiple clevis' at once may also be an option for the Extension Rod.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
