20 in 15 is a behind the scenes look at the lives of twenty different artists, their creative processes and working environments.
My name is Bill Mudge, and last year I photographed 20 creative people for a personal project called 20 in 15. This year, with your help I would like to try and make a photo book of the work.
The project evolved by each participant recommending the next. I worked on it in my spare time, spending roughly 300+ hours on shoots, travelling to locations and processing the images.
About half of the artists on the project are local to me in Carshalton, where there is a thriving Arts community. I also travelled to locations around the UK and France to complete the project.
The twenty artists & organisations who will be featured in the book are:
- Peter S Smith – Painter Printmaker
- Alex Foster – Illustrator
- Abel Kesteven – Artist
- Aga Cowling – Amber & Glass Designer
- Jeremy Clark – Ceramic Sculptor
- Luci Metcalfe – Artist
- Dan Redding – Videographer
- Kathryn Sherriff – Ceramicist
- Glow – Design Agency
- Guy Meredith – Composer
- Emma Capron – Interior Designer
- Wayne Sleeth – Artist
- Kendra Haste – Sculptor
- Alban Low – Illustrator
- Lucy Furlong – Poet
- Karin Andrews Jashapara – Shadow Puppetry
- Emily Hall – Weaver and Ceramicist
- Andrew Candy – Gallery Owner & Graphic Designer
- Art Language Location – Contemporary Arts Festival
- Association Amitiés Tsiganes – Community Arts Projects
What will the book be like?
All the artists will be represented, and if you scroll down you'll see a few of the photographs that will go into the book. For now they are helping to entice you to pledge some money, but I’ll remove the typography for the book :-)
I have the backing of a great family run publisher called Sampson Low who specialise in creative arts publications. I have collaborated with them on other projects and I know they do an amazing job of supporting creative projects just like this one.
I’m working on the layout with graphic designer Sean Chilvers, and as I write this we are looking through some initial drafts. I'll update you as we progress. I have a mock-up unprinted book to give you an idea of the dimensions and the paper it will be printed on. It’s going to be 100% recycled, which is good news for all my tree friends.
Turning 20 in 15 into a book will be a wonderful way to celebrate the project, showcase the artists and get the work out to a wider audience.
20 in 15 has been hugely beneficial in developing my own creative process, and I feel very privileged to have been welcomed into artists' studios to photograph them.
Thanks for your support!
An exhibition of 20 in 15 will be held at [mine] gallery 30-34 High Street Carshalton SM5 3AG from 5-27th March. The gallery space is kindly provided by Andrew Candy.
This exhibition is being funded independently of Kickstarter and will go ahead even if I don't reach the Kickstarter goal.

Risks and challenges
By trusting me with your pledge, I guarantee not to disappoint with this book.
All of the photographs have been taken, the artists are behind the project and the designer and publisher are keen to get started. Should the funding be a success, my only challenge is to get the book designed and printed ready to send out to you in March.
