I forgot about this project, and thought that I had just lost the email to get the download for the film or any of the rewards. But damn, looks like other people never got their rewards either. Hmm.

    2. Robyn Gallagher on February 3, 2016

I'm never giving up hope that I will one day receive my reward. Even if it's 20 years down the track, I know one day it will come.

    3. AHD on April 16, 2015

It would be nice if you would at least send a link to download the film (you must have it uploaded somewhere online?) to make right with the people who never received their DVDs, due to them either not being sent, or just lost in the mail. This seems like such an easy fix....

    4. Alyssa Gootierrez on January 30, 2015

To his friends making excuses , I have never paid $100 for a DVD. I contributed to support the art, however when you make promises you don't keep and stay silent on the matter, you just look like you took the money and ran. Having children is no excuse. I am a parent and $100 is a lot of money for me to give to anyone. Now he is begging once again. A mea culpa directly from him would have gone far, instead of relying on friends to excuse his behavior. I will never donate to kickstarter again because of him.

    5. Katy M on January 29, 2015

Sarah: Honestly, at this point it really isn't about the rewards. Of course it never was. It was always about the art, and the project, and helping something we believed in. The problem has become the fact that we have been ignored. No message saying "I'm sorry, it didn't work out, I'm still really grateful though". Nothing. That is what sucks. I'm glad it worked out, I'm glad this work was seen in the States... But I also have kids. Three of them, who all have been born since I kicked in to this Kickstarter. I still have the time to send thank-you notes for their birthday presents. It's being ignored that isn't nice.

      Kia ora fellow backers.

I'm pretty bummed out by the lack of empathy or critical thinking that has been happening in response to Taika messing this up. Put yourselves in his shoes: this model was new to all of us when he crowdsourced for US distribution of Boy. He clearly promised more than he could ever deliver - he's just one person, with a family to feed and absolutely no money to spare. To put it in perspective: he was expecting a baby any minute, yet he wasn't even renting a house when he was running this campaign. Taika's my friend, and here are some facts about him: he is turning 40 this year, he has two kids, he has no assets to speak of (drives the same 30 year old car he's had forever, is nowhere near home ownership), and works non-stop. He rarely goes on holiday, or even takes a full weekend off work.

I imagine when he put together the list of rewards he was feeling confident that he could achieve them - perhaps he didn't quite realise what a mammoth job it was going to be. He's said as much to the media. Let's face it: there are some major problems with the neo-liberalisation of the arts that crowd-sourced funding supports by creating a situation where not only does the artist make their art and do all of the usual stuff (administration, taxes etc), they also have to a) promote their art so that other people will fund it, b) create more art to give to people who fund their other art, and d) maintain all of this art and administration at a level that satisfies and is sustainable for everyone - it's just completely unrealistic. I say this as someone who has successfully run one of these campaigns for a creative project of my own. As an artist and a parent I too struggled to get the rewards out to my backers - I only managed it because I am part of a collective, and the non-parents picked up the slack. Every reminder from dissatisfied backers made me feel guilty and stressed, but I couldn't get the rewards together any quicker. I was broke and time-poor. Like Taika.

Yes, he's gone onto his next project - because that's what you have to do when you're a creative, you have to keep creating. Not necessarily because of some unique and special creative impulse, but because it's your job and the hustling never ends. Surely the most important thing for everyone who backed this project is a sense of accomplishment - we did it, the film was seen in cinemas throughout the States. We supported an independent New Zealand film. That was why we contributed - not for a DVD, or a poster, or whatever. If this is the only way that our generation can have it's own cultural legacy, then so be it. Let's not whine about a poster when the more awesome thing is that, against all odds, New Zealanders are still making some amazing art, and that we will always be able to locate ourselves temporarily and geographically through this art. He waka eke noa, yeah? We're all in it together.

    8. Piero Manchego-Badiola on January 22, 2015

Excited to see that "What We Do In the Shadows" is expanding but a damn shame that Taika failed to be accountable after this big mess. I have a feeling that the majority of backers from BOY won't be so eager to contribute to his latest film and rightly so.

    9. Katy M on August 9, 2014

Seriously, we need an update. I've written you a private message and asked for a refund, but you're ignoring all contact. This is not okay.

    10. Alyssa Gootierrez on May 29, 2014

This was not a failed project. He got money he begged for and basically flipped supporters off . Don't promise what you can't deliver.

    11. AHD on May 27, 2014

Never received the DVD, patch, etc. Disappointed in the lack of any sort of response or update. Not complaining, just hoping this is some sort of mistake. Really loved the film, well done.

It's not fair. We're now at the point where "What We Do in the Shadows", Taika's next project is coming to fruition, and I'm left feeling really disappointed and uncomfortable, even if that too is probably a great film. I've contacted Kickstarter, Taika, even Fair Go - and nothing. It takes great trust to unleash your creative project into the world, and great trust to support it - this is so much about communication and valuing fans and supporters and it's such a shame.

    13. Katy M on May 6, 2014

Any news at all? Anything? 2 years and 2 months and still nothing? At this point it's not so much about the rewards, as the fact that I now feel that you took our money without any intent to fulfill. Sometimes projects fail, sometimes it's just too costly to send out rewards, kids arrive (I've had two since pledging), anything can happen... but to just be ignored leaves a really bitter taste in my mouth. PLEASE give us some kind of update, it's only fair.

    14. Robyn Gallagher on March 9, 2014

Just wondering if anyone has received the "digital poster". I haven't.

    15. Alyssa Gootierrez on February 28, 2014

will never support again, 2 years and no communication!!!

    16. Piero Manchego-Badiola on February 13, 2014

Digging this back up from the grave...any news about the status of the pledges? There are still some of us who are waiting patiently after almost two years. Managing projects and pledges like this can't be easy but all it takes is an update, some kind of explanation to ease our minds and restore a little faith.

In other news, "What We Do in the Shadows" seems interesting. Look forward to seeing it.

    17. Jessie Scoullar on September 11, 2013

I agree with Nicola below. The radio silence is really disappointing. I'm about to move house for the second time since I pledged 18 months or so ago - I'll send in my new address, but I'm not expecting much :(

Waiting on DVD, poster, patch, card, in London.

My local library here in the US has four copies of Boy on DVD (awesome!), so I presume that distribution should no longer be an issue. I have moved house and sent my new address to the Kickstarter crew a month ago, and have received no response. I hope that the rewards are sent soon, and to my correct address.

I feel very disappointed in this whole process - I'd seen the movie in theatres three times (in NZ and the US), saw Taika on his US tour of the movie, told all my friends in the US to go see it, and pledged a much higher Kickstarter pledge than I normally would - because I really love this movie and want to see it and Taika succeed, and enable him to make more hilarious and poignant projects.

The disappointing part of this process has not been the wait to receive Kickstarter rewards. I understand that things take time, and that even if the US-region DVDs were ready, Taika would still have to sign them all by hand while still taking care of other creative endeavours, his family and having a life. However, I feel very let down at the total lapse in communication that has happened since the successful US tour - no more charming video updates, no emails, not even so much as a tweet saying "Sorry, I haven't forgotten about you, I promise!". I've read all of the comments here and some of them are pretty harsh - I certainly wouldn't call Taika a "thief", maybe just naive.

It's not a nice feeling to be left wondering if us Kickstarter backers will be rewarded, or even sent an update - a little like Boy himself staring down a dirt road, waiting, and hoping that his beloved Shogun will remember him after all.

Just wanted to let fellow backers know that I got some of my pledge gifts today in California! I got my DVD, jacket patch and membership card! Hopefully, everyone else will be getting their gifts over the following week or two. :)

I know some folks are frustrated ( I know, I was at times, too) but the Kickstarter model is still relatively new and there is going to be a learning curve in how to execute and complete a successful campaign. Just thinking about the logistics of a project like this with over a thousand backers, while working another job, balancing family & home, etc., make my head spin.

Hiccups aside, Taika & Co., I hope this doesn't put you off from doing another KS campaign and that you've learned a lot about crowdsourcing! Thanks for a great film and I can't wait to share it with my friends who missed it the first time around.

But the bigger THANKS goes out to all of my fellow backers that made it possible to see BOY at a theater here in the US. Thank you giving me a chance to see this last year with a great crowd and Taika in person. :)

Emanuel Michael, now that wasn't so hard, was it? A simple update on where things stand. This could have been posted months and months ago, with encouraging words and words of thanks to the backers who gave you $110,000. That's a huge chunk of change. A simple message posted periodically would have gone a long way. My opinion on this whole thing may change when/if the rewards are actually received. Lesson learned all the way around, eh?

    34. Katy M on May 16, 2013

Thanks for getting in touch, Emanuel. Communication like this is awesome, and I think it will go a long way to calming people down -- I haven't heard anything since last August, so I figured we had been given up on. I know that i kicked in to this project because I know taika's work and I was excited to help bring him to a wider audience, even in a small way. Glad to see we haven't been forgotten :)

Hey Rob, Katy, and everyone... As one of the producers of BOY, I can confirm that this latest comment is 100% accurate. Firstly, the date that was initially put down for the rewards was inaccurate. Second, the DVD was the major hang up. It wasn't allowed to be circulating so far in advance of the actual DVD release in the States. It had nothing to do with Taika who had to weather some pretty rough emails and comments... Taika actually went out of his way to physically complete all of the rewards and pushed as hard as he could for the early release of the DVD, but "the suits" said that the DVD had to wait, and so... well, we were stuck in contractual mud... We feel terrible about the huge delay in the States... We're sorry that our US fans and supporters had to wait so long for these rewards... (I'm waiting on mine too...) There is good news, though... I know for a fact that the DVD has now been given a green light... The US rewards are beginning to be sent out tomorrow (Friday, May 17th, 2013)... All of the rewards are packaged and ready to go out, so they will all finally get to their proper homes! Thank you for sticking with us... It was a long haul... But it's coming together now... Thank you for your patience, your generosity, your coolness, and your support!

    36. Rob B. on May 16, 2013

Not sure if anyone else has been contacted, but here's a message that I just received which gives me a little hope that our prizes will be delivered; though I must admit that I still have a "I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it" attitude. Anyhow, read on...

I can tell you now the USA / CANADA shipment will be released as of Monday 20th May.
Unfortunately the reward date that was posted initially was never correct. We were never able to release any material on DVD to the USA or Canada until after a certain amount of time following the theatrical release.
Taika certainly had no hand in writing the reward received by date. However he has had to deal with all the rewards personally. There is no machine behind him helping him to get it all together.

I have been helping Taika from NZ to sort these reward packages and get all the NTSC components made. Infact all the rewards had to be created from scratch. This in no way excuses your wait for the reward and we will make good on the promise that was made to you.

Please accept our apology and do hope this does not affect your relationship with Kickstarter in the future.

      Kind regards,
      BOY kickstarter reward helper.

    37. Katy M on May 13, 2013

I gave up waiting. I sent Mr. Waititi an email, and left a comment on here and on twitter. Nothing. I have asked Kickstarter to step in. I'd like my reward or a refund.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent:

Hi. Back in Feb 2012, I backed the project "Boy: The American Release" ( The goal was $90,000 and just over $110,000 was actually raised. I pledged $100, my first pledge with Kickstarter, and as yet my only pledge. The fulfillment date was set at March 2012, but we heard from the project creator that his wife had had a baby, and things would be delayed. In July 2012, I was sent a mass email asking for my details so that the rewards could be fulfilled. I completed it on time, and returned it promptly. Approximately three weeks ago I contacted the creator to let him know that I'm moving, and wanted to let him know my new address, asking him when we could expect reward fulfillment and how best to make sure my new address is noted. No response. Now we are over a year past the fulfillment deadline, I see that Taika Waititi (the creator) is actively using twitter, so he hasn't actually fallen off the face of the earth, and the dvd and bluray are both on Amazon for pre-order, and the film premieres that he wanted to fund have taken place across the country. Many, many backers are complaining on the project message board, and many of us appear to be in the same boat. At this point with Mr. Waititi refusing to respond to us, I'd like you to step in to ask him to make good on his promises, or else refund us. As an attorney, I know that it is not your place to issue refunds, but I hope that you will be able to ask him to take action. He has definitely made me leary of funding any more kickstarter projects.
I appreciate your attention and help.

    38. Alyssa Gootierrez on May 9, 2013

still waiting-disappointed. you shouldn't ask people for financial help then not follow through with what was promised. having a child is not an excuse, what an example to teach.

    39. Katy M on May 3, 2013

... and to all, have faith :) Surely Taika will come through. When he started the project, and we pledged, we formed a contract. From the Kickstarter website:

Is a creator legally obligated to fulfill the promises of their project?
Yes. Kickstarter's Terms of Use require creators to fulfill all rewards of their project or refund any backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill. (This is what creators see before they launch.) We crafted these terms to create a legal requirement for creators to follow through on their projects, and to give backers a recourse if they don't. We hope that backers will consider using this provision only in cases where they feel that a creator has not made a good faith effort to complete the project and fulfill.

    40. Katy M on May 3, 2013
