Kickstarter is about being part of a community – the filmmaker and audience coming together to share the process of bringing an idea to filmic life. It's simple, direct, empowering and revolutionary. The perfect vehicle for SIBERIA, a film conceived by me and Chris Zois, a screenwriter and psychiatrist, that uses Carl Jung's The Red Book as a starting point. I wish to explore the language of dreams, myth and the natural world.
SIBERIA is another step in the work Willem and I have been doing together but still a work that is new and mysterious to us. This is why I am turning to this platform and this modern, positive way of realising true personal expression for the filmmaker.
PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VIDEO PRESENTING THE PROJECT, NARRATED BY WILLEM DAFOE:
'We are not trying to frame nature and express our point of view. We are entering nature and letting it tell us what to do…' – Willem Dafoe
Willem on making films with Abel:
Abel understands, obviously, that if you give a performer a connection to what is going on then when it’s time to actually do the thing there’s an understanding. He can go deeper and I can go deeper because you don’t waste all this time trying to figure out what you’re doing. It sounds really prosaic and kind of obvious but it’s not. The model for making traditional movies very much is: you have a screenplay, you have a director, then you cast it, then you get everyone there and you get them dressed in the clothes and everything’s nice but then when you get there it just doesn’t come together because people start from different places and they’re interested in different things. When we all start at the same place it’s not to say that everyone does everything, but if you allow for that it’s much more organic.
Chris Zois - Co-Writer
Chris speaks of Carl Jung attempting to meld Science and Mythology in an attempt to understand the meaning of life. The portal he used to gain access to that knowledge was dreams, visions and fantasies. SIBERIA uses Jung's work as the basis to present a visual interpretation of the universal issues. The absurdity, comedy and menace inherent in the human condition inform the fabric of this film. It is a project that will resonate with everyone in one aspect or another. It will be a groundbreaking work which uses the filmmaker's own dreams and visions as a laboratory. In this way the film is both a subjective and objective inquiry into the question of who are we, why are we here and where are we going. In this way we address the question as to what is the meaning of existence.
Diana Phillips - Producer
Abel and I have made four films together on the streets of New York, mostly at night: CHINA GIRL, KING OF NEW YORK, BAD LIEUTENANT and DANGEROUS GAME. It's not for the faint of heart. To work with a creative force like Abel is a gift… and constantly challenging. Not too long ago I asked him what he most wanted to do next, what story did he need to tell, because I wanted to be there to do that with him. That's when we started discussing SIBERIA. This incredible body of work – Abel's years of telling stories – is going to explode with the making of SIBERIA. With the community of dedicated, faithful kickstarters we are making this film exactly as it should be made – and with Willem Dafoe's genius this film will be, like all of Abel's best movies, both art and entertainment. And like nothing else.
We begin in an outpost far north of Jack London country where CLINT holds out with his partner MITCHELL, (Willem Dafoe in both roles) serving coffee, sympathy and an odd video game to passing strangers. All seems at one in this strange cafe. Appearance is deceptive as CLINT begins to cross the line between what is real and what is not. He is thrust on a journey across his psyche into distant lands, of epic natural beauty and the darkness of his own past and future. Soul searching by dog sled.
As you will have heard from Willem’s reading of the screen play on the Kickstarter page, SIBERIA travels to locations of contrasting and extreme conditions. we move from snow, through caves, through mountain, into rocky desert, into sandy desert, cosmos and skies. These images below are ones that inspired us and now we will search around the world for the best locations that we can shoot in. With the Kickstarter finance the you are allowing us to ensure we explore the look of SIBERIA and find the best locations to make what is on the page a reality.
Where will your $500,000.00 be spent?
The Kickstarter money equals a sixth of the overall budget for SIBERIA to be made. Not only is it a sixth but it is also the first finance that literally kickstarts the process as the other backers are standing by in the wings ready to match what we raise via Kickstarter. As the Kickstarter money will be the first piece of finance arriving it will be used to pay for the pre production on the film. It will cover everything from the location scouting, paying the highly qualified team to come on board and casting the other 13 cast members. Your money is the seed of the project and without it SIBERIA will not happen.

Risks and challenges
Once the Kickstarter campaign has been completed we will have three months to prep SIBERIA. This process is not only a creative time for the film's development but a time for dealing with logistical challenges – all movies are. And we know how to make films. But every movie is different. The locations for SIBERIA need to be epic, iconic, places that open the film up visually – that way the screenplay will find its truest form. Our story deals with snow, Alaskan huskies, deep cavernous caves, watery grottoes, the deepest forest…. So location scouting is our first challenge.
We’ll keep you posted as we find the locations and then work out what is real, what is shootable and what is going to need special of visual effects. This will be the special world of SIBERIA we create. So, that’s the second challenge.
The discovery of a film comes through the writing, the prepping, the shooting, the editing and every day and every decision brings you closer to the film you are making, the story you are telling, and in the end you answer questions on a daily basis that you didn’t know you had….so, the third challenge is keeping open to all that comes up, keep pushing for more and better, and use every minute and dollar you have… With Kickstarter, this day to day process will all be happening on the site, available to you to watch as it unfolds… and the challenges or what we call opportunities will be confronted.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
