Barry the Bear
Barry the Bear

Barry the Bear lives in his comfortable cave by the sea. By day, he likes to go to the beach and watch the surfers ride the waves. He also likes to strum his guitar and exercise. One day Barry finds an old redwood log and decides to learn how to surf. Find out what happens when Barry meets the surfers and introduces them to his friends Walter the Weasel and Ollie the Owl.

Barry's story was inspired by time spent traveling, hiking and reading with my family. By using Kickstarter I am reaching out to family and friends to help fund the illustration and publication of The Adventures of Barry the Bear, my first children's book.

I have found an excellent illustrator named Baird Hoffmire (see his first illustration of Barry above). By raising this money with the help of Kickstarter, I will be able to pay Baird to complete the illustrations and contract with a publishing company to create the book. The book will come out in soft jacket copy as well as in electronic/digital form.

I am excited to bring Barry the Bear to life. I think it's a fun story for children of all ages and I hope people like the idea enough to support the project!

Risks and challenges

It was a challenge to find an illustrator who effectively captured the spirit of what I had in mind for Barry. It took me several months of chasing leads before I found Baird, who illustrated the expressive image above (Barry strumming his old guitar). I am excited to see what he will do with the remaining fifteen illustrations in the book.

A big hurdle in terms of creating the book will be collaborating with the illustrator and the publisher to complete the images and incorporate the text in a timely manner. I'm ready for the work, and I look forward to bringing the story to life.

Other challenges have included getting the text just right -- finding the balance between fun story telling and direct writing that best conveys the scenes. This has been an ongoing process. I have edited the copy several times and have had a variety of people read through it. At this point, the story has evolved and the text is basically finished.

More challenges include how to best market the book to children and parents. I've communicated with a few authors who have successfully published children's books. They have been very generous with their input and have helped me understand what to expect. This book is written out of a genuine affection for Barry's story. I am dedicated to getting the book into the right hands at local schools, libraries and onto the internet (with the help of my publisher).

I have been a journalist and an editor for almost two decades. I am confident that I can have the book published within a few months of handing it off to the publisher, with whom I have already had extensive contact. With the support of my family and friends I hope to make the book a reality by May of 2013 (if not sooner). I have also contacted a local silk screening company that will create t-shirts that I can distribute to supporters.

Barring unforeseen catastrophes, I think the book can be edited, illustrated and printed (in hard copy and online) within approximately two months of paying the publisher. That said I have allowed myself six months to complete the project to allow for possible complications with the process.

I am excited to make The Adventures of Barry the Bear a reality!
