About

Wassup Space cakes!

My name is Cherry Lazar and I'm a 23 year old artist and film maker, from New Zealand. I'll tell you more about me if you scroll down but for now let's get straight to business. Allow me to guide you through the ins and outs of the Lazarniverse!

So what on Earth is Lazarniverse?

It's a 20 minute sci-fi short film that I've been developing for a while now. I started noodling out it's world and writing the script back in may 2016, in fact it's moving at such full force these days it's ready to be shot, I just need some of your help to get there!

Lazarniverse is set in the Amargosa Valley, Nevada, riding the fringes of Area 51 (that's about 2 hours drive from Las Vegas). Even deep into the Nevada desert you will surprisingly find yourself passing by roadside brothels and whorehouses. However none of them will be quite like the "Pleasure Planet". Because it's located in a hotbed for extra-terrestrial life and research, that's what they specialize in. Other words, its a sci-fi themed Brothel. You want to fornicate with a Vulcan or a girl from Venus. This is the place to go. Prostitute Ethel Terrestrial works in this wholesome institution and it's interest in all forms of alien life that lead her to chasing an unidentified falling object from the sky. She enlists the help of slot machine repair man Marvin Singular and together they go on a mission to figure out what in the stars just landed on earth. It involves casinos, cowboys, cave women and a mysterious mobile stripper who claims to have come from Jupiter. All in all I think its going to be pretty unique.

The tone of the film will be very campy and  tounge in cheek. Hopefully you'll find it funny. Imagine a cross between "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" and "Flash Gordon". Maybe add in a little "Barbarella" for prosperity. Actually I'm not sure that film should ever be made. But oh well, we're going to do it anyway.

But wait!

There's prostitutes and strippers you say!  Fear not dear friend, this won't be an R rated flick (or sorry, depending on what you came here for). There might be the occasional naughty nip slip but the film is more focused on sci-fi pop culture than sexytimes. Maybe don't bring your kids though.

The Characters+Costumes

The cast ( and crew ) of Lazarniverse is predominantly female and story has three fetching hero characters.

  • Ethel Terrestrial
  • Jupiter Janet
  • Marvin Singular

I've been designing all of the costumes that I and my co-costume constructer, Phoenix, will be putting together for the film. Each character has a really distinct look and color combo. Here are just a few examples, enough images to tease but still to leave surprises for when you get to see Lazarniverse!

The Locations

I want to shoot the film on location in the Nevada desert. In the video up top you can check out some footage from my visits, otherwise here's some photos to peruse.  Shoot is slated to begin on the 10th of July 2017.

Why are you asking for so much money?

Basically making movies is expensive. Period. They cost even more when you have to get a crew out to the desert for one week, and make sure that they are safe, clean, comfortable and fed. Oh! And paid! I would really love to be able to pay each person working for me for their time and their skills. Let's round it up :

  • Costumes. We're making really elaborate costumes, and even though this is B-grade sci-fi it doesn't mean we want cardboard flaps on everything.
  • Wigs+Makeup+Nails. It wouldn't be a Cherry Lazar production if half the budget wasn't going towards false eye lashes. the characters are getting custom wigs and nails. Just btw. The make up is going to be insane.
  • Props. Ray guns are more expensive than one would think.
  • Car hire/s. both as a prop and to get us around. Including gas.
  • Equipment. I would like to  rent out a high quality camera to film with and equipment like a dolly and lights (and loads more boring technical stuff). This will help the film look like it was made for a million dollars, unlike my intro vid that I made on my iphone. Trying to step up my game here.
  • Pay day/ The Crew. For everyone that works on this film , except for myself, I'm not taking a cut.
  • Accommodation.  Apparently there are rattle snakes out there at night and I really don't  think we would like to find out if there is truth to that statement.
  • Locations. Some locations and permits to film need to be paid for.
  • Food. Self explanitory. I need a fueled up crew.
  • Post-Production. This is a huge one. Renting out an editing suite, doing color work , VFX etc. Post is extremely costly and super-duper important.
  • Soundtrack. Unfortunately I don't think George Lucas will lend me the Cantina song so we're going to be in need of an original score.
  • Festival entry. Once the film has been made my aim  is to send it into  International and Genre film festivals, such as Sundance, Cannes, SXSW, Etheria and Fantasia. They all have entry fees and they do start to add up.
  • Kickstarter fees. They will take about 3% out of our total and another 3-5% for processing the money.

About me

I'm Cherry Lazar, a 23 year old artist and film maker from Auckland, New Zealand . I've grown up all over the world having lived in Singapore, London, Sydney, Geneva, Munich and Paris. I make/take and do self-portraiture photography, illustration, performance, costume design and film. I've had multiple exhibitions of my work in galleries throughout Europe, Been on a BIC lighter, shot for magazines like Elle, and you might have read about me in publications such as the Huffington Post, Der Spiegel, Le Figaro etc. Last year after I graduated college (Ecole Parsons a Paris) I was hand picked by Luc Besson to take part in film director training with him in Paris, which led to what I'm doing now working in a costume department for a film made by Universal studios. Everything I do has a very specific look, it's kitschy bubble fun and harks back to a by-gone era whilst retaining a contemporary feel. The personalities in it are usually female, with big hair and curves to match. You can check me out over on Instagram @CherryLazar

On Lazarniverse I'm going to be in the credits as : Director, writer , producer, editor, costume designer, production designer & probably for a bit of bad acting.

My Crew

Look how pretty they are
Look how pretty they are

For the moment we might be small, but we are strong! Because it's early days I'm still crewing up. If you think you'd  be interested in being a part of Lazarniverse, and are preferably LA or Las Vegas based, please feel free to send me a message. Because of the tiny nature of our production, most of us are taking on multiple roles, so please bear with our ambiguous job titles.

Phoenix Atwood

Co-Producer & costume constructer

Phoenix is a ridiculously talented costume maker and artist based out of Wellington, New Zealand. She's made costumes for projects like The Ghost in the Shell, The Shannara Chronicles and Crouching Tiger hidden dragon. She's the queen of Latex construction which is great when making a sci-fi film with prostitute aliens, and is also a mega-babe painter in her free time.

Randy Ceballos

Set design and generally making stuff look good.

Randy is from New York, USA and works as a  freelance photographer. He's shot backstage at NYC and Paris fashion week for Racked.com. Shot for blogger Deni Elias (Chicmuse) and her brand collaborations with Manolo Blahnik, Dolce & Gabanna, Cartier, Lanvin, Carla Otto and  Printemps department store, where an exhibition of his photographs were shown. Photographed both new and established faces for Elite, Ford and Viva modeling agency. He has interned for brands like Alexander Wang and Magazines like Vogue Russia. Randy is basically super gifted at making things look beautiful and classy.  Which is just what we need around here.

Trevor Mansfield

Lighting & Technical

Trevor is from Napa, California but seems to be living in a new country every few months.  He's shot for magazines like Purple, walked as a model for Antonio Marras, Shot  both new and established faces for Elite models, Done ad campaigns for brands like Les Enfants Riche Deprime  and Curated a Gallery (The Jewlery Shop) in the Marais of Paris. He's basically done it all. But Trevor also happens to be a master of the light, having studied photography at Brooks, Speos and Ecole Parsons a Paris. Which is why he's going to be in charge of lighting and all technical photography stuff.

Stella Markert

Production assistant and casting

Stella is from Berlin, Germany. She is currently working as a production assistant at Club productions, and is training as a casting assistant at Ostwesting street casting.  She has worked on print ads for McDonalds and done casting work for  Telekom, Adidas, T-mobile Netherlands, BerlinerKindl and SkyTV. Stella has also been featured in two music videos by French musician Jeremy Kapone.  "En Vogue" and "Aquarium" .

Fritzie Annik

Production assistant

Fritzie is from Berlin, Germany.  She is currently working at Detailfilm Berlin GmbH in cooperation with Zentropa Berlin gmbH. This has led to production involvement with the recent Olivier Assayas film Personal Shopper. But she has worked as a production assistant and continuety advisor on many European independent films such as The witness, AT ende neu, Es war einmal Indianerland and Notes of Berlin.

Hannah Gordon

The Kitchen bitch

Aka. the chef. Because we are going to be out in the middle of no where for one week, Hannah is going to come along and cook for us all out of a rather glamorous RV. Without her we will probably starve, making her the most important person on set. She is a professional pattisiere , and has worked in some of Auckland's best restaurants, lucky us she happens to be one of my closest friends too. She'll probably wind up with an acting roll as well. A woman of many talents.

Before we get started, I would love to thank everyone who has helped me and supported Lazarniverse so far. This has and will be such an exciting journey! I also have to thank all of you who will be putting some of your hard earned money towards it. From $1 to $1,000 every cent counts and I hope that I can create something that will entertain, make you smile and more than anything make you proud.

Let's rock n' roll!

Risks and challenges

I want to be fully transparent with everyone. When you donate, I'll be sending a bi-monthly update to your email on the project. This will include photos and drawings of how its all going but it will also include how the budget is being spent and where it's going 100%. Trust me, every single cent will be used.

Disasters can happen with movies all the time. Because we are a small and tight team of multi-taskers the unique problems that might give us set backs will most likely come from where we are shooting. For example: The desert being too hot to shoot and we only have limited days, a car breaking down etc.

I'm going to werk my butt off to ensure that nothing goes wrong. But I do have to highlight the risks to you.
