About this project
This article from the San Francisco Chronicle explains our campaign - http://www.sfchronicle.com/news/article/Banksy-s-S-F-artwork-draws-a-six-figure-fervor-5568831.php?cmpid=twitter-premium&t=c1f98bd3ff793836fd#/4
Find out more about our project at our official site page here where we explain many of the details, as well as how Banksy feels about our preservation efforts: http://www.SavetheBanksy.org
We are trying to save a Banksy painting and make a statement about preserving street art. The city of San Francisco ordered the painting removed. The building owner was preparing to paint over it. We stepped in and had the painting professionally removed. We have received multiple offers from private collectors for the painting, but have refused all offers because we want the painting to find a home where the public can view it. The painting is now on twelve separate pieces of wood. Our plan is to have the entire painting mounted onto a specially designed frame made of aircraft grade aluminum. The entire painting will be cleaned, sealed and preserved. Our Kickstarter campaign will cover all costs for restoration, crating, shipping, storing and insuring the painting until a public institution can be found for the painting.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge is convincing people that our intentions are true. That this piece will not be sold. We have rejected more than a dozen offers from galleries and private collectors. We are actively working to find a public place for the piece. Some of the worlds top street artists are involved in this project. We want to start a dialogue about the importance of street art and the issues with selling public works for private profit. We have had discussions with four major contemporary art museums, a performing arts center and other public facilities about taking this piece for public display. Our offer is simple "put the Banksy on public display and it is yours". We want to find the right fit for this piece.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
