Strike! is a tabletop RPG with grid-based tactical combat. It's simple to learn and play, but more importantly it gives you all the best things in gaming with nothing slowing you down or getting in the way. What sets Strike! apart?
Every roll is 1d6. This makes it fast and easy to learn, teach, and play.
Setting agnostic. Strike's exciting combat and surprising twists fit smoothly into any setting.
No boring failures. When you don't succeed there's a twist: maybe you get what you want or maybe you don't, but either way something interesting happens that changes the situation.
Non-binary resolution. Despite the simplicity, there are four or five distinct possible results on every roll, not just Success or Failure.
Speed! Because of the simplicity, and helped by other tweaks, the game runs very quickly. Combat only takes 20-30 minutes, even at high levels. The system supports players taking risks and gives characters interesting options without being burdensome and pulling you out of the game to crunch numbers.
Character creation is simple too, and there are no false choices. Now instead of spending time trying to spend points and sorting through endless lists, you can just pick a background to give you basic skills, pick a class and role, do a little bit of customization and get to playing.
Variety without complexity. Combining your choice from ten classes with any of five roles gives you fifty unique options that will each play very differently from one another. Re-skinning guidelines help you create exactly the character you want with ease.
The game is complete, playtested, and already has fans. This kickstarter is about raising money to pay for more art and professional layout and editing, and to get the physical book that you want into your hands. When complete, the game will have loads of cool art and about 150 pages of content in a beautiful full-color layout. I want this game to sit on your shelf with pride! The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. There have been constructive suggestions, and I've tweaked things here and there, and I want to thank everyone who has already contributed for their time and feedback.
Now that the project has been funded, more money coming in will allow me to buy more art and pay more for professional services such as editing and layout. But more money should also mean that you backers get more content. I'm ready to go on writing up and adding to the game some exciting new stuff.
(UNLOCKED!) Titanic Foes: When we reach $4000, I'll include rules for creating Titans. These enormous adversaries can rapidly change the battlefield, have multiple modes of attack, and must be taken down piece by piece.
(UNLOCKED!) Kits: Do you want to be able to see the future? Be in charge of a gang? Save others by suffering in their stead? Those all sound like cool abilities that could use some elaboration... When we reach $5000, I'll include rules for Kits. Kits act like a class for when you're not in combat, giving you special abilities and powers based around a theme. I'm very excited about these, and you should be, too!
(UNLOCKED!) Final Journeys: At $6000, you will unlock Final Journeys. This will give you the tools you need to set a final goal for your character and see it through to its conclusion. Want to become empress, or be rich enough to buy your own space station, or effect sweeping social changes? These rules help you get there and retire your character in style!
(UNLOCKED!) Other Worlds: At $7000, I will write up sets of Origins, Backgrounds, Feats, characters, and advice to help you adapt your campaign to more fantastic worlds. Fight a rebellion against a galaxy-spanning empire, explore a world of spirits as masters of the elements, or play as veterans in a mercenary company fighting in a world ruled by wizards of incredible power.
(UNLOCKED!) New Class Features: Some classes have choices of class features, like the Necromancer's choice of Gifts. At $8000, this goal will bring those kinds of choices to classes that don't currently have them. If you're a fan of more character building options, you want to hit this goal!
Rules for Adversarial Play: At $9000, you will unlock two options: Deadly Delves and Campaign Invasion. These provide extra rules that free the DM to pull no punches and play to win, not just in Combat, but in the game as a whole, without being unfair. In Deadly Delves, you will enter into hostile lairs, struggle to survive perils and come away with the prize or at least your life. In Campaign Invasion, you take on the roles of generals, presidents, and master spies to guide your side to victory in war.
An Original Setting: At $10 000, you will unlock the Last Aeon. I will expand the fantasy world from the sample adventure into a full-fledged setting. For setting design, I will take inspiration from the very cool ideas developed by Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet's 13th Age. This goal would take a lot of writing and require a bunch more art to be commissioned, but $10 000 is a goal worth celebrating with that kind of effort!
What is this about mini-expansions?
I have tons of ideas for things to add on to the game, but at some point it's time to stop cramming stuff in and get the thing published! I'm still making these things, though, and I want to get them into your hands. The first three mini-expansions will include:
- One class, chosen by you, the backers at the ALL THE BITS or THE SWEET SPOT levels or above. You could pick the Berserker, who gets more powerful as fights go on, where others start to flag. You could pick the Rogue, who bests anyone at hiding and attacking from stealth. You could pick the Shieldbearer, whose protection makes the whole party safer.
- Vehicle rules, bringing an even faster version of the Strike! tactical combat system to tanks, boats, spaceships, or war elephants.
- A new skin for the sample adventure, chosen again by you, the backers.
These give an idea of what to expect for the future of Strike!: player options in the form of classes, feats, and more; rules options, variants, and expansions; and DM content in the form of new adventures and monsters.
How do the LAWGIVER and FONT OF WISDOM tiers work?
LAWGIVERS: You give me one optional rule or variant and I will make sure it fits in with the rest of the game and include it. Naturally, if I find your contribution inappropriate, I will work with you to find a mutually satisfactory alternative.
DR. FRANKENSTEINS: You give me one monster and I will check the math and include it. Naturally, if I find your contribution inappropriate, I will work with you to find a mutually satisfactory alternative.
FONTS OF WISDOM: You give me a topic that I can reasonably cover in one page. If the topic is too large to cover in one page, I may suggest making it a mini-expansion instead. If I do not feel that I can or should write about your topic, I will discuss alternatives with you.
There aren't any big numbers. Why do you hate math so much?
As a mathematician, one of my class features is Favored Enemy: Numbers.
Risks and challenges
The game itself is done. There is no risk that it will not be finished. This kickstarter is about getting art, professional editing and layout, and getting a physical product into your hands.
As a newcomer to the business, the biggest risk is the unknown. I am taking steps to mitigate and minimize risks. For instance, I am providing at-cost vouchers at DrivethruRPG to eliminate the risk to the project of dealing with fulfillment and its surprises myself.
