All that jazz
Baby Food Kitchen shares my journey making baby food for my son between 4 and 12 months of age, and some of his favourite recipes. I hope it will inspire more parents to do the same because it matters - early eating habits have a lasting impact on diet and health! And apparently, it could influence Baby's pickiness with food. And yes, my son (still) eats everything I make, including vegetables and other experimental (failed) recipes not included in this book.
Where it all started
When I started making baby food, I discovered that many baby food recipe books out there are either (a) westernized and do not incorporate readily available local ingredients (like dragonfruit, lychee, shiitake mushrooms, and wolf berries), or (b) designed as complete meal planners focused on 'doing it right' - ultra daunting for a kitchen noob like myself who struggles to figure out cooking terms and don't own a single Kitchen Aid appliance.... Or (c) verbally instructed by grandma with dialect ingredient names that cannot be found on Redmart.
So I just freestyled and experimented with recipes... I have been posting these creations on my Instagram and it sort of become a hobby. So I thought, why not make it a book!
The food flinging journey
It has been such a fun, creative, and stimulating experience for Baby and I so far. All the way from thinking up new recipes, to shopping with Baby, preparing the food, feeding and waiting to see his reaction, to now involving him in the preparation (so far mostly involves him eating and flinging the ingredients all over the kitchen, and loudly directing my cooking in Minion-ese). Oh yes, and of course throwing away barely eaten meals because Baby wasn't enthusiastic :( but often also seeing the food in his poop :) --> means he ate it! Yay!
Where we're headed
This book has already been designed and beautifully (at least in my opinion) illustrated in watercolour, and written in a lighthearted manner - a departure from "traditional" recipe books - so it could (maybe) earn a space on your coffee table or as a gift for your new parent friends.
I'm at the stage of trying to figure out how many copies of the book to print through this pre-order, and by approaching retailers and partners. Feel free to message me if you know someone who might stock my book for sale! I fully expect to be able to print and ship this book within the next 3-4 weeks... Or if you have great recipes I can try now that Baby is 12+ months. Maybe I'll make a second book!
Risks and challenges
Most of the content of the book is done, but there is a risk of delivery timeline slippage due to unforeseen delays such in book endorsements, artwork finalization and printing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
