Why I write
I discovered my love for working with children when I started teaching seven year olds in schools. I fell in love with their pure hearts, unconditional love and wild imaginations. I loved how each child was special and unique in their own ways. Managing multiple personalities daily was a wild adventure. However, through my teaching career I started to see children being left out by their friends simply because of their differences. And while all children are different, I quickly learned they have one thing in common: They desire love and acceptance.
I have liaised with many parents over the years and a common theme of reoccurrence is the importance of cultivating good values starting from a young impressionable age. I am passionate about making a difference; to infuse young minds with good values and life lessons in simple, relatable ways. These are values which I hope will carry them through life.
This has inspired me to write a book to address issues like these and to help children see uniqueness as something to be celebrated. I want every child to know that the very thing that makes them different is what makes them special. The story of Stripes takes us on a journey of self-discovery and self-awareness. This book addresses conflicts in friendships and more importantly, conflict resolution and the power of forgiveness.
Children are drawn to attractive, colourful pictures. This book embodies that. It is not just a beautifully illustrated book but it has an excellent story with fun relatable characters. I believe that Best Dressed will help children see that the very thing that makes them stand out is what makes them truly one of a kind. My hope is that children will learn to accept and love themselves and others for their differences.
Who is this book for?
Best Dressed is for primarily children between the ages of 4-8, but it has a message that all ages will enjoy.
About the Author & Her journey
Hi! My name is Soo Sian. I was the girl who, at the age of 6, wanted to live on a boat with a pet giraffe and dreamt of writing children’s books. I would often draw and write stories and convince my friends to act them out. While I didn’t quite get my dream of a boat and a giraffe, I did live a very colourful, unconventional life in the exotic island of Borneo. My parents moved around extensively and therefore so did I. Throughout my nomadic life I went to 6 different schools between the ages of 10 and 18. To date, I have lived in 6 different cities which has given me a different perspective on life and an appreciation for cultural diversity.
Many told me that to pursue the creative arts and writing was ‘impractical’. I moved to New Zealand after high school to pursue my tertiary education. After which I worked in the hospitality industry and later became a flight attendant. However, I kept that love for art and writing alive. I like to think that my colourful adventures have just added spice and charm to the stories I write.
I then became an educator, which proved to be a fun and exciting challenge. The challenges I faced started to channel into creativity and art, and along the way this book was born!
After six years since the first draft of Best Dressed and many other road bumps later, I have decided to further pursue this dream of becoming a children’s book author. I am passionate about making a difference at an international level through this book.
I have always known that I wanted to write books to make a difference in the lives of children across the world and I am taking steps towards making it happen. I know that this is just the first book of many in the Charmington Majestica series, and I can’t wait for you to read them all!
I want my books to carry positive messages of hope and to inspire children around the world that they can be whatever they set their little hearts to.
How Stripes came about
The character of Stripes was born during a particularly chaotic time in my life as I made the choice to give up my life in San Francisco and Vancouver for a life of teaching little people. I too felt a little out of place, like a Zebra in a herd of Horses!
The story of Stripes interestingly began from a giraffe I painted called Sui Generis who learnt to accept herself for being one of a kind. That was a defining moment for me, as I embarked on the journey of self-acceptance and being comfortable in my own skin. It became clear to me that I wanted to share that message to children in a fun, relatable story.
When I finished my story, I emailed it to close family and friends. I got such a positive response that I decided to take it further – to develop characters and the plot of the story. Over the years, it has gone through countless rounds of edits and the words of the story finally found their perfect illustrations. “Best Dressed” has grown from a simple little story into a full-fledged book! I want Stripes to be an authentic, down-to-earth lovable character; one that carries positive messages about love and acceptance to children around the world.
As I continue my journey in writing children’s books, I want to address issues which children face in my books through relatable stories. As you partner with me, we can make this book a reality! I would like to share this excellent story so that children will love reading this book and learn to love themselves for who they really are.
