Overview
SPOILER ALERT for seasons 5 & 6. Carry on.
This is a Kickstarter for all the fans of Game of Thrones who feel a certain pang of disappointment every time the show returns to its Dornish plotline. Our plan is to create a “patch” for Game of Thrones season five's Dorne storyline with our own fairly interesting and competently executed alternative plot. Once we finish with our promised delivery of season five, we will continue as far as the rest of our funding will take us into season six and beyond. Enthusiasts will rejoice to know that these scenes will “plug and play” with the existing episodes, meaning that all they have to do is watch the episodes as usual on HBOGO or blu-ray, pause whenever the show’s “Dorne” comes on, and play the next supplemental scene in its place before skipping to the end. How will our storyline deviate? First, let’s establish what we’re reacting to.
After a promising start featuring a totally on point motorcycle jacket, Jaime Lannister enlisted the help of a reluctant Bronn the Sellsword to embark on a secret mission to Dorne in order to re-unkidnap Jaime’s public secret daughter, Princess Myrcella. The rest, unfortunately, is history.
Our Rifftrax-esque supplement to the show picks up after Jaime and Bronn first leave King’s Landing.
Instead of being met with the convenient delivery of clothes and horses sufficient to somehow transport them into the most guarded location in the entire kingdom, our intrepid duo find themselves in a half-familiar culture that has every reason to distrust them.
Meanwhile, our Sand Snakes are introduced in a style closer to George RR Martin’s - as diverse as their mothers, and written as more than just catty comic relief. Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene Sand will be distinct characters - and Ellaria Sand will be torn between her patriotism, her slain lover’s memory, and her desire for vengeance.
To be clear, we are far from being book purists. The costume and set designers for the show did a fantastic job with the Dornish culture, and many of our qualms come from strange writing choices and what seemed like a misallocation of creative resources. While we'll draw heavily from the books to remake the Sand Snakes, we'll be sticking to the show for decisions such as having Bronn be a singer and Areo Hotah hail from the Summer Isles.
Great, Sure, But Why Twenty Million Dollars!?
One episode of Game of Thrones costs approximately six to ten million dollars - sometimes more for large battles or premieres. Given that we do not have access to the refined logistical pipeline or top tier networking resources of HBO, we presume that things will cost even more in order for us to match the show’s production value. While the total running time of our content will be less than two episodes’ worth, we need to ensure that we make up for this immense difference in structural resources. That is why we arrived at a budget of twenty million dollars in order to cover the on-location filming, casting of excellent acting talent, top tier fight choreography, set design, costuming, photography direction, crewing, insurance, environmental CGI, and all the other myriad costs of a world class primetime period drama.
Our Team
David Panfilo is a writer, singer, actor, and producer. Aside from being a principal question writer for the official Game of Thrones trivia boardgame, he has also cut his teeth as the script supervisor for Cinequest award winner "Creedmoria" and as a producer / production manager for Kickstarter Editor’s Choice "Castles in the Air".
Sean Ireland is a producer, 1st AD, writer, actor, and director. He was famous in Canada for a day for his "Hadfield At Home" series. See his group "Unlikely Allies” whose "Open Letter To Kickstarter" was a Kickstarter Editor's Choice project in 2011, and the "VERONICA MARS KICK STARTER oficzial SOVIET," which has yet to be recognized in any official capacity.
Vincent Pezzutti is an ideas guy, generalist, and entrepreneur.
Teela Wyman and Jonathan Ying, are both artists and writers - Jonathan was even the lead designer for that official Game of Thrones trivia boardgame!
Funding Goals
20 million - We will make a series of “plug-and-play” replacement scenes for the entire Dorne plotline through at least the end of season five of Game of Thrones. Season six and beyond are on the table, but only insofar as we can afford them with what funds are left over after delivering on our season five promise. Our expected date of delivery is May 2018, but any dramatic legal hurdles, or other delays mentioned in the below Risks and Challenges section, could delay delivery by a year or more.
Needless to say, these further goals will be a bit of a stretch. All hiring offers pend on the interest and contractual ability of a given actor to working with basically competent independent filmmakers biting off way more than they can chew.
We will try to hire Alexander Siddig to play Doran Martell.
[and probably hide an easter egg in the show that implies he may actually be Julian Bashir (of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) on a holodeck]
We will attempt to hire Jerome Flynn to play Bronn.
[and ask him to reunite with Robson Green (of Robson and Jerome) to record The Dornishman’s Wife]
We will try to hire Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to play Jaime Lannister
[and ask him to issue a formal apology to the Egyptian people for "Gods of Egypt"]
We will extend an offer of seven million dollars to George R. R. Martin to use at his discretion if he will canonize our project as the “real” adaptation of the Dornish plotline from page to screen. Otherwise, this money will go towards marketing and expanding our project.
While we’re extremely confident that we would be able to script and shoot a much more dynamic and compelling Dorne plotline than the existing one, at this threshold we will hire highly experienced directors and producers to shoot this project in our place.
For 50 million dollars we will release a patch that makes it so Ned Stark is still alive through at least Season Five.
We are placing our expected delivery dates years into the future, because in the event this Kickstarter succeeds, it will be a transformative but very real chapter in our lives that requires a vast expansion of our responsibilities as filmmakers. The scope of this project demands we play to posterity, not to immediacy. Furthermore, because the Dorne plot must still “plug and play” with the rest of the show, we could not finalize plans in advance of new episodes that feature Dorne actually airing. Unless, of course, we were embraced as the Snake Unit for the official show. That would be pretty rad.
The worst case scenario is that some combination of an obstructive HBO, totally unforeseen expenses (beyond our already considerable buffer), and bad fortune result in a refund of all money raised to our backers, along with a heartfelt apology. If the project is doable with the funds raised, it will be done - it just might end up being concluded after the series finishes. In this case, our content would still function as the definitive fan version of the complete Dorne storyline, just a bit after the fact. In any case, we will keep our backers updated month to month with all the goings-on of our somewhat ambitious enterprise.
All this is in addition to the normal concerns of a massive-scale filming project. We will be properly insured and run things to the highest standard of ethics, but of course we cannot foresee everything. If our backers and fellow fans give us dramatic negative feedback during the course of production, we will do our utmost to rewrite, edit, and pivot our plans in order to meet their high expectations.
