About this project
JAM celebrates those intimate moments in which the fan feels a personal and almost spiritual connection with the musicians baring their souls on stage. Seeing a live concert can be a direct way to share a profound moment with both the artists and your friends, one that we do not get to experience by simply listening to a recording. There is a certain magical element to seeing a specific moment captured as a photograph and as a viewer looking at that photo and being taken back to a place and time that is part of your history. These images aim to illustrate the musicians’ artistry and on-stage personality through a still photograph, together with some revealing words spoken by the artists themselves. This book is not simply a showing of a musical performance, but about the epic moments the artists create on stage that capture the hearts and minds of the fans experiencing these magical, musical moments.
Jay Blakesberg has previously published five coffee table books of his work, including those on The Grateful Dead, Primus, The Flaming Lips, and The Mother Hips. His latest book, 'Traveling on a High Frequency' is a 30-year retrospective of his music photography. JAM is not a print-on-demand book, but will be published in a full first edition. Much hard work and love has already been poured into the bindings of JAM; however, book printing and publishing isn't cheap! We know the cost of producing this book will be $30,000+. Our hopes are that the sales of JAM in bookstores and online will reimburse these costs, but we need your help to get it started. Jay is putting forward $15,000, half the cost, of his own money to support the project. What we're asking for is the other half, so we can pay the production team needed be able to get this book printed and into your hands!
We truly appreciate any help you can give and would love to make it worth your hard-earned money. This is why we hope you can give at the $40 level, which acts as an advanced purchase of the book. We are dying to get this epic body of work onto your coffee table so the pages can delight you and your friends for many years to come.
Risks and challenges
As an artist, taking risks creatively has always resulted in more interesting photographs for me. I think taking risks is the most important thing an artist can do! The risks involved in this project were more on the overall pre-production side. I have already spent several months working with a graphic designer determining the look and feel of the book. We have already done many interviews. I have ALL the photographs I need for the project. There are a few more key interviews needed (but they have been promised to me), so one risk is any delays that might result from trying to pin down some high-profile artists to give me their interview. Otherwise, since I have successfully published five coffee table books (four of them self published), I don't see any challenges in the production/printing process, nor any risk that this project will not be completed. www.rockoutbooks.com will show you a variety of different books I have published which hopefully will remove any doubt a backer may have that this project will not succeed.
