The Invisible Dog is entering its fifth season, and our home at 51 Bergen Street is 150 this year.

"You're not supposed to give people what they want, you give them what they don't know they want yet." Diana Vreeland

The Invisible Dog is entering its fifth season, and our home at 51 Bergen Street is 150 this year. We belong to the legacy of this former factory; the ghosts of production inspire our creativity and make manifest the dynamic programming you love. When we first saw the building it gave us what we didn't know we wanted: an artistic home in Brooklyn. And now we try to fill it with accessible programming that, however surprising, fulfills your unknown desires as well.

After four years of presenting artists from down the block and around the world, we have established ourselves as both a place for the larger NYC arts community to gather together to exchange ideas and see new work, but also as a place in which smaller communities of artists and advocates are constantly being born.

The Former 'Invisible Dog Leash'-Warehouse Becomes Artistic Hub
Wall Street Journal, September 2013

When we launched our first Kickstarter last year, we knew we could rely on these community members to help us reach our goal. We are so grateful to everyone who helped us last year, but now we need you to help us again - to help maintain this important cultural and social resource.

We raised over $30,000 last year, and we want to exceed this goal this year. Thanks to the unique programming that this funding helped us to present, we were named one of Brooklyn's top 10 most important alternative art spaces by the L Magazine and one of the top 30 New York City art spaces to discover.

Since 2009 The Invisible Dog has included some of the most ambitious and elaborate installations and group shows in the borough.
The L Magazine, June 2013

This year we are launching a brand new seasonal exhibition space next to the Invisible Dog called The Glass House. The Glass House will primarily feature work from female artists as part of an effort to make more exhibition opportunities for women. We are thrilled to add a new space and more programming to our repertoire, but our need for support is critical to help keep this space filled throughout the year. We have many performances and exhibitions planned for our various spaces including:

* 8 contemporary art exhibitions from September to May in our Main Gallery, Garden Gallery and The Glass House including Massimo Guerrera, Mac Premo, Louie Hinnen, Nick Vaughn & Jake Margolin, Weird Collage International, Anne Mourier, and several others to be announced.

* Each year we present many music, theater and dance performances as well as unique, cross-disciplinary events. This year we will partner with the French Institute/Alliance Francaise Crossing the Line, Walls & Bridges, Brooklyn Beta, the Queer International Arts Festival, Ugly Duckling Press,  PS122/Coil, Catch, PEN World Voices Festival, Vermont Performance Lab, Abrons Arts Center, and the Joyce. Our programming will feature work from Thierry Niang, Jeremy Xido, Laurie Berg, SUPERGROUP, and many other artists.

* 4 Performing and Visual Arts Residencies: A competitive application process will determine the residencies that will engage The Invisible Dog’s spaces.

No contribution is too small; and if you cannot contribute financially, help us by broadcasting this campaign through your social networks.

The Invisible Dog's arrival has influenced much of this slice of Bergen Street's decidedly artistic renaissance.                                                        Wall Street Journal, September 2013

Thank you to Mac Premo who produced this awesome movie with the generous participation of [in order of appearance]:  Rachel Barrett, Oliver Jeffers and JR.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

There are risks inherent to programming cultural presentations and managing a facility as large and old as ours. We typically program one year ahead of time, and in the months leading up to an opening, the scope of the project may change demanding a change in scheduling or venue. Our building is well-maintained, but as with any structure, occasionally repairs need to be made that might delay or alter our programming. However, we are well-aware of the types of challenges we face, and as we have been in business for four years, we have developed a strong ability to make decisions in the present that offset risk in the future. Moreover, our staff has over a decade of producing experience, and as such, we know how to meet challenges calmly and with an innovative approach to solutions.

Nick Vaughn & Jake Margolin will make you one of their signature portraits of you and any person of your choosing (or you alone) cut into a map of any state that is significant to you. This March we are proud to host an exhibition from this duo featuring new work from their series, A MARRIAGE. Nick and Jake's work explores the struggle for marriage equality and American history. They create portraits of newly married queer couples, cut into maps depicting the state in which they were married. This will be a beautiful, one-of-a-kind portrait to hang in your home. The artists will gladly frame, deliver, and install the piece anywhere in NYC. Delivery (and install if required) outside of the five boroughs will require additional cost to be worked out directly with the artists. You will also be listed on our donor wall and website and receive a Tattly™ and an invitation to our donor party.
