The cast of Spring Awakening has a chance to perform on the Tonys, but we need your help! Help show the world this beautiful show.
About this project
Thank you for helping us realize our dream of performing on the Tonys! Every dollar raised that isn’t spent on the Tonys will go towards Deaf West Theatre’s activities in Los Angeles and beyond.
On June 12, Deaf West Theatre's Spring Awakening has a chance to perform on the Tony Awards! Last year, Deaf West Theatre brought our message of theater for everyone to New York City when Spring Awakening opened on Broadway. Our incredible cast of deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing performers included 23 actors making their Broadway debuts! And we were so proud to bring deaf talent to Broadway and show the world how the deaf and hearing communities can collaborate to create a truly beautiful piece of art and tell a story in a new and inspiring way.
Spring Awakening opened on Broadway to fantastic reviews and was on 18 "Best of 2015" theater lists. It has been nominated for the 2016 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards for Best Musical Revival. Throughout its limited engagement, it continued to focus on accessibility in theater, becoming the first Broadway show to conduct its ticket lottery in ASL and holding a special Symposium on How to Make Broadway More Accessible.
Spring Awakening never would have made it to Broadway without the Kickstarter backers who helped fund our production in LA. And now we're asking for your help to show the rest of the world why this show is so special.
We're raising $200,000 to cover the costs of performing on the Tony Awards on June 12th. Yes, you read that correctly, we need to raise $200,000. And with Kickstarter's rules we either raise all $200,000 or we get nothing!
Since our limited run ended in January, we don't have the funds to pay all the expenses associated with the performance. We need to fly our cast back to New York, we have to get the costumes and instruments and props out of storage, we have to pay for rehearsal space since we don't have a theatre, etc. And then there's the actual expense of performing on the broadcast! So we're going back to our roots and raising money on Kickstarter just like we did for our first production in that 99 seat theatre in LA on skid row.
We're so honored to be nominated for the Tony for Best Musical Revival, and to have the chance to perform on the live broadcast. But it's an expensive process, and we can't do it without you!
Because Deaf West Theatre is a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations to help fund our Tony performance are tax deductible!
Please donate to help show the world that Spring Awakening is #NotGone.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge for our Tony performance is that we're no longer running! We have to reassemble our incredibly talented cast, we have to get the costumes and instruments and props out of storage, we have to pay for rehearsal space since we don't have a theatre, etc. Our production ended its limited run in January, so unlike the other nominees our cast and creative team are no longer all in the same city. This makes rehearsing and performing a logistical challenge, but with your help, we're prepared to overcome it to present the best Tony performance possible!
