"Mother? Where am I?"
"Oh son, you're at the top of the naughty list."
Robbie is a broken robot.
His adventure seems to have already ended and he is confused. He doesn't remember how he got to where he is, or why he can't even see properly. All he knows is that he can hear his darling mother's voice inside his head, and that she loves him very much.
Even if her words sometimes sting.
It's time to pay attention to his elders, pull himself back together, and find his missing parts. Mother seems to be in such a rush, and keeps talking of plans already made. Robbie just wants to please her, and knows too well the consequences of asking too many questions. He's sure she'll take care of all of his worries in time.
Speaking of time, how long was he asleep for?
Why doesn't he know what his purpose is? Why doesn't he remember where he was before? And why is he made of so much metal?
You're a broken robot.
Fix yourself up to please Mother.
Praise for the original K.O.L.M.
"There is no doubt in my mind that I would shell out cash for it. K.O.L.M. is one of the most polished, engaging, and flat out incredible flash games I’ve played. Ever."
"a quiet gem of an experience with a surprising amount of depth in its simple design. I expect K.O.L.M. to be a strong contender for the Best of 2010 in the Platform game category."
"K.O.L.M. is one of the most gorgeous, strikingly melancholy and creatively designed Flash games I've played in ages. It's ostensibly a platformer, but like Endeavour it's primarily about exploration. This time, there's also a captivating unfolding story to keep you going as well."
K.O.L.M. was a story driven platformer with heavy emphasis on exploration and upgrading your little robot to reach new as well as previously unreachable areas. It was a story driven adventure, focusing mainly on the turbulent relationship between the main character, Robbie, and his demanding and cruel Mother figure.
It drew on a long heritage of amazing games in the genre, and was released to widespread acclaim in 2010, shortly followed by part 2 in 2011. Developed while I was under full time employment with Armor Games, it was left on a cliffhanger and originally intended to be finished in a final third part that was never released.
K.O.L.M.I.A.M. (K.O.L.M. in a minute) was a spin off from the main game in which players were challenged to complete micro adventures each lasting less than a minute. It proved very popular with the fans and thus is also receiving the remake treatment. It's also perfect to expand on, allowing for user generated content and even co-op modes added should sufficient funding be reached.
So what about the 2014 remake and completion of the series?
The main game will be made up of the first two chapters, K.O.L.M. and K.O.L.M. II completely remade from the ground up, and a brand new third chapter that finally finishes the story of this broken family. Additionally to this, K.O.L.M.I.A.M. will be ported to and expanded on in the new engine. I want to provide hours of content for all player types whether they play for the story, speedrunners, completionists and everyone with an appreciation for the genre.
Backers who match or exceed the game tier will automatically be eligible for a DRM Free copy on release, as well as, if we're successful with the Greenlight campaign, a Steam Key to activate the game on Steam. If we are able to submit on Steam, you can be sure we'll get in Achievements, trading cards and anything else we can possibly aim for to take advantage of the platform.
Papercraft Instruction Sheet
Instruction sheet for an easy to assemble papercraft model of the main character of K.O.L.M.'s story, Robbie! His basic shape and straight edges mean that it's the perfect beginner papercraft project for anyone to have a try. All you need is a printer, scissors and glue! This will be sent out to any backers of Tier 3 and above!
Check out the video below for a brief sample of this amazingly beautiful soundtrack. Working with Tommy has been a blast before, and I think he can add a huge amount to the atmosphere of the remake.
Armor Games has very kindly hooked me up with a company to produce amazingly cute 6 inch plush toys based on the Robbie character. These will, for the moment, be limited quantity, and likely to go fast. I'm really excited to be able to actually hold a part of my game, as well as share it with the backers who pledge for the Plushie level and above.
These will initially be a part of limited production run, so once they're gone, they're gone!
All these and more can be yours if you decided to back the game. There is also the opportunity to be part of the game in various ways, including your likeness being associated with the previously unnamed and unseen friendly and very unfriendly characters you'll meet on the journey. Read up in the rewards section to find out more! Every little helps! Become a backer and join me on this journey!
Of course, if I were to exceed my goal I'd be ecstatic. Extra funding would mean I could invest extra resources and time into developing features for the game. However I wouldn't want these features to cause a delay in the primary product. So more money would literally mean more time spent, and I'm happy to release extras as updates post main game release, so I'm not keeping people waiting due to generosity!
I worked for Armor Games for quite some time, creating dozens of free web games over the years. I've had several hit series, including the Upgrade Complete games, SHIFT, IndestructoTank! and of course, K.O.L.M. to name but a few.
Pledging to support K.O.L.M. on any level would be an amazing way to show your support for any of the free games I've made in the past, and you should definitely let me know if you've played or enjoyed them, it really would make my day!
While employed at Armor they funded and supported my dream to make the first two games in the KOLM series. After I left, my dream of finishing the series was put on hold. I approached Armor about finishing the 3rd game and while they didn't have the budget to support the project, they were keen to help me be successful on Kickstarter and even offered to make the Plush Toys for the rewards.
This lead me to plan the project you see before you today! The game will get made, using the amazing power of Kickstarter, something that would have been impossible even only a couple of years ago!
Up until now, I’ve only been able to work on the project in the evenings and on weekends and progress has been slower than I’d like. With your help, I could work on it full time and be able to finish it to the standard that the game deserves.
It's an incredibly important project for me, and Kickstarter seems like the perfect fit. I hope you agree, because I'm looking to cultivate a strong community around the project, which is another thing Kickstarter provides excellent tools for. I'm very excited to be launching this and I want my backers to be to!
Let's hope it works out, and thank you for reading this far down! I hope I can count on your support.
I would also like to pledge my intention to Kick it forward if the project is funded. You can find out more about this Kickstarter movement here: http://kickingitforward.org
Risks and challenges
What are the risks and challenges of the development of K.O.L.M.?
Despite all the best intentions in the world, sometimes completely unavoidable situations arise, such as serious illness or injury, situations deemed "acts of god" or other calamities that can delay a project such as this. Sometimes delays are inevitable. Usually they are for the better, but I understand the frustration involved following projects that seem to stretch out on an on.
However, I've been creating games for over 12 years now, and have both the experience, patience and drive to complete this in nearly every single imaginable circumstance. The development team is lean, motivated and sensible. We're realistic and know our limits. However what I'm doing here is what I've done best for years. Focused game development with realistic scope and expectations. I have the experience, the knowledge and the skills needed to complete this project in a timely fashion. I am very confident in saying I won't be letting anyone down.
The physical delivery of items such as the plushies is always a bit risky for projects. However this reward is being handled by Armor Games. They've made and sold plushies based on game franchises before. I know them personally, I worked with them for years. They are a well oiled machine of awesome and I trust them.
Help make this happen and I will move heaven and earth to make this work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
