We all dream of having superpowers. But if superpowers were to exist in our everyday lives, would those powers tell us something about who we are?
Blending the iconic imagery of superhero media with an intimate, character-driven story, "Superhuman" follows the story of three protagonists whose lives are forever changed by uncommon abilities they are given. In a unique spin on the traditional superhero tale, the series challenges the questions of power and morality, while bringing to light issues of society we face in our world today.
Taking a step back from the whiz-bang visual effects overload of recent superhero action flicks, Superhuman brings the superhero story back down to earth, into relatable settings and situations of the real world. There are no aliens from Krypton, or gods from Asgard, or super serums or radioactive accidents (though we love all those heroes too!) Their powers come from within, and are defined by their actions.
Intended to be the first of a three-season trilogy, Season 1 of Superhuman will consist of nine episodes running approximately 5-7 minutes in length each, and will debut in December 2013.
Who Are We?
Ben Enke: Producer/Showrunner/Director - Ben graduated from the University of Minnesota with a double degree in Communications and Media Studies. He was a cinematographer on two feature films and several shorts, and runs an independent video production company specializing in event and business promotional material. An avid Star Wars fan, superhero nerd, and iDevice enthusiast, with a killer Bane impression to boot.
Steven Hoff: Producer/Screenwriter/Stunt Choreographer - Steven is currently pursuing a double major in Media and Communication Studies. Who has, in the past, been anything from an actor, cameraman, stunt man, fight choreographer, gaffer, make up artist, prop maker, and costume designer. Labeled as being someone as 'a man of many hats' in this industry, he continues to strive towards new and exciting things to learn and continue creating new things that others enjoy. Besides filming he enjoys volunteer work, martial arts, and all forms of nerdery.
J.D. O'Brien: Producer/Screenwriter/Assistant Director - J.D. attended film school at the University of the Nations in Harpenden, England. As a lifelong blues guitarist, he takes the improvisational framework of the blues and applies it to his filmmaking, creating a fresh, creative and emotionally charged visual style. He has directed short films on 3 different continents.
Danica Diver: Production Manager - Graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in Communications and Film Studies where she can twist words into a stimulating experience, Danica's work has been awarded best picture at the UMN film festival, and nominated by NATAS for long form fiction. Her talent for the entertainment industry has led her to complete production internships at both Nike and Fox 9. Artistic and technical, she is a driven entertainer who loves a one-sitting - 120 star - mission to defeat Bowser in Mario 64.
Ben Elling: Director of Photography - A graduate of the University of Minnesota, with a dual degree in electronic communication and film, Elling (Or Ben or Ben 2.0) has worked on many different projects, from feature films to corporate training videos. Creator. Lover. Friend. He has beaten The Legend of Zelda OOT an unhealthy amount of times.
Briana Rose Lee - Casting Director/Script Supervisor - Briana is a Massachusetts theater nerd who found her way to Minnesota. She met many of the other people involved in Superhuman while in school and in film classes bonding over a mutual love of the superhero and fantasy genres. She's excited to have a hand in a piece that can educate people about something seldom spoken about because "the hardest thing in this world... is to live in it."
We the producers are attempting to write a small chapter in the massive superhero universe we know, love, and cherish greatly. In order to do that, we needed to assemble a team that was equally and unquestionably eager to produce a superhero series that is not only fun to make (it is superheroes after all) but, hopefully, engaging and exciting for people to watch and enjoy.
Now we turn to you.
We hope to produce Episodes 1-9 this summer, and debut them across December 2013 and January 2014. We know the potential this series has, based off the amazing results of the concept trailer we produced on the tiniest of budgets. The same cast and crew is returning for the series, and is eager to bring you the first chapter of this epic tale.
This Kickstarter campaign is to raise the money we need to produce an absolute knockout webseries that can build enough steam to finish the story that is unfolding in Season 1, a story that we hope can one day confidently stand alongside other great superhero tales.

Why Should You Support Superhuman?
1) You want to watch a superhero story that brings the characters and the story to the forefront: Not the dazzling visual effects and mind-numbing action of recent superhero blockbuster films.
2) You want to join the incredible team we've already assembled: We've been getting ready to produce Season 1 since January of this year. It's been in the director's mind for over two years now. We're ready to bring this project to life, we're eager to produce it, and we're eager to show you it. We want you to be a part of the effort too.
3) For portraying a real-world story with real-world evil: From the beginning, we always knew that one of the defining make-or-break factors of our series would be the featuring of sex trafficking as our evil in Season 1. It was important to us as filmmakers and as writers to portray a reality-based superhero world with the same conflicts that exist today, without being vulgar, explicit, or off-putting. The subject of sex trafficking is indeed uncomfortable, unsettling, and rarely spoken about, much less portrayed in a narrative series. We understand the gravity of the evil, we've done our research into it, and we're not afraid to take it head on.
When Do We Start Filming?
Immediately! After we successfully complete the Kickstarter campaign, we will disperse funding immediately to the necessary departments and begin shooting!
Where's My Money Going?
Being a superhero webseries typically would come with a large budget needed for fancy VFX and lots of difficult action sequences. We're taking a different approach (though that doesn't mean we won't have our fair share of fun and action too!)
We also own or have access to a large pool of gear and equipment, and we don't need to rent a RED Epic to make this series awesome (though no one would be complaining).
Your money then primarily goes towards providing outstanding catering services for our cast and crew across the duration of the shoot, supplementary gear rentals for equipment we do not own (audio mixers and lavs), production design (set dec, props, wardrobe), location fees, and hair and makeup.
And, of course, there are also some truly AWESOME rewards for donating at every level, including some truly unique and amazing rewards at the higher levels that would make even Tony Stark a little bit jealous.
So How Do I Help?
1) Make a contribution of any kind. You will not only get a great reward, you get to brag to your friends and say you helped out a superhero show. Plus you have our gratitude and love until the end of time.
2) Share our project. Word of mouth is everything. Tell a friend, family member, fellow superhero fan, or broadcast us on your favorite social media device that you've contributed to this campaign (they'll even give you the option to after you donate - it's that easy!)
3) Fasten your seatbelt. Because Superhuman is coming soon....
Risks and challenges
We know that being the first season of a superhero webseries, there will undoubtedly be rough patches along the way. We realize the ambition of the project, especially as it pertains to our budget and goal. We realize the expectations that also come with producing an original superhero webseries.
We also know that our team has faced this and then some already. Our trailer faced a number of weather delays and rescheduling, but its lofty expectations only heightened the quality of production.
We are absolutely 110% committed to bringing this project to life, doing justice to the genre, and delivering a high quality, kickass webseries.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
