About

There are A LOT of projects out there, so THANK YOU for taking the time to check out this one!!!

"CHRIS" is an audio drama podcast loosely based off of a true, unsolved cold case in the woods of Stacyville, ME.  This is a fictional story despite the fact that it's based on a true cold case -- I cannot stress that part enough!

In 2010, the decomposed body of a man is found in the woods of Stacyville, ME. His only identifying factor a knit hat that says "CHRIS." Jessica London, a PI from NYC who traumatically experienced the murder of a loved one, comes to Maine to find this John Doe's family. Will Jessica find justice for "CHRIS" seven years later -- a fate she believes no family should ever have to suffer -- or will her obsession with swiping right get in the way of her investigation?

I hope with that description alone you're excited to hear what happens with our PI Jessica and to see if she solves this case!

Hi, I'm Jessica, and I'm a voice actor in Maine (of all places!).  There aren't too many of us around here, and work is kinda hard to come by locally (having the ability to travel is KEY!  And also, a home studio).  So, I decided to write my own podcast, giving the opportunity for local VAs to work together without having to travel too far.

I'm no stranger to Voice Over or audio drama in general.  I began my career about 6 years ago, starting as a dj for a local, non-profit community radio station.  I hosted a show called "Chick In Your Face -- the show for men hosted by a girl."  I learned A LOT during that time, including how to interview (which I messed up a lot in those days) and it was how I had my first ever podcast!!  It's here I found out about Audacity (a free audio editing software) and how to use it.  I still use it to this day in combination with other powerful tools.  The very first voice acting gig I EVER did was a recreation of Archie's Christmas Shopping where I played Mary.  The producer for that show, John, was my mentor at WSCA, and graciously gave me this role even though I had zero experience (and had no business playing a mom -- I sounded younger than the teen who played Veronica haha!).  With his guidance and help, that's how I grew to love audio drama.  I've done several audio dramas for him, my favorite being Effie in Sam Spade.  We performed that one live in front of a packed house!  It was a surreal experience since voice over isn't normally live.

After that, I started working for a popular radio station locally where Mike Haze mentored me on commercial production.  He taught me how to read a spot... without reading.  Also, he's a master of editing and that's where I began to really blossom, under his tutelage.  I was an overnight DJ on two very popular stations and produced HUNDREDS of commercials.  I used this time to learn and experiment what works... and what doesn't.  In fact, my very first favorite spot is one Mike directed me on. He forced me to get out of my comfort zone.  Listen to that spot here.  Mike was always there to make sure I didn't put out anything subpar, too.  I had one client in particular who loved my voice and requested me several times.  That felt amazing!!

As I became more comfortable with production, I ended my time at the radio station and took a voice over class in Boston with Dorothy Gallagher and Brian McKeever, who also introduced me to Marissa Lenti in Dallas.  I studied with the three of them over the next couple of years for both commercial and anime training.  Here is where I began to get more and more auditions, and started booking some stuff on my own!  My biggest commercial to date was a spot I did for Heluva Good! Dip (called Pool Party -- click here to listen to it!  I come in at the end). This was my very first national spot on the radio. I've done tons of stuff for Pandora and Spotify (milk, Runway Fashion Exchange, Starbucks) -- but this was the first one that was on the radio radio where my friends and family outside of New England (who don't listen to internet radio) could hear it.

Shortly after that, Rick Coste contacted me to work on his audio drama Waterguns and Rainbows.  He ended up casting me as the lead in Charlie's Mailbox as well.  Funny side story about Rick contacting me.  He found me on backstage.com, pinned me to the side because he loved my demo, and kept coming back to it.  Then, when he looked to see where I was from (thinking I'd be on the West Coast), he realized I was only a couple towns over!  I helped him find another voice actor (my cousin, Brent) to play opposite my character Crystal, and for the first time ever, he recorded an audio drama at his own home.  Normally, voice actors would just send him the files -- but he got to actually direct us LIVE! It was seriously an awesome experience (and, of course, we grabbed a few beers after at what's become my favorite place to get a drink).  Since then, he's cast me in several secondary characters as well.  Rick was also featured on NH Chronicle recently, and graciously asked me if I'd join him.  Check out the Chronicle story here!

I also work on a popular YouTube channel for kids called NewScapePro. They have over half a million subscribers because those kiddos love their Minecraft!  I'll be honest -- I have NO idea how to play, but I can play a mean game of Roblox with my 8 year old nephew (you try getting a call from him saying "Auntie Jess, will you play Roblox with me?"  You'd drop everything you were doing to play for 10 minutes with him!).  I play a wide range of characters -- but my absolute favorite has to be the villain.  You can hear my demos from that, and all the rest of my demos, here.  You can check out the work of NewScape Pro on YouTube here.

Now that you know a little about me, my experience, and what I personally bring to the table, let's talk about the reason you're here!

Producing a podcast, and especially an audio drama, is... hard.  Pulling it off isn't going to be easy, but I've never been known to do the easiest thing possible.  In fact, I believe that the harder something is, the more rewarding it will be when I achieve the success I desire.  These things not only don't happen overnight, they don't happen alone.  I have help.  A LOT of help.  And the best support system!!!!

Guess what?  That means YOU, too!!

With that being said, let's get down to the nitty gritty: where is your money going, how do I intend to use it, am I going to take your money and run?

Here's a handy little pie chart to show you just how expensive this process can be!!

NOTE: This chart is based on my ENTIRE budget.  I am NOT crowdfunding for every single thing.  Since this is my baby, I am not expecting fundraisers to pay for all of it -- nor do I want that.  I want to take care of as much as I can myself.  It's just that with your help, this happens SO MUCH faster and I can work towards my dream sooner!

Budget Pie Chart
Budget Pie Chart

As you can see, post production is the biggest budget-hog.  Well, there's a reason for that.  You can write a script, you can get a bunch of people to record it with you, and you can have some of the very best voice acting you've ever heard in your life!!   But post prod?  Sound design?  That stuff takes A LOT of time, A LOT of patience, and some damn good skill.  Skimping on this part of production can REALLY hurt an audio drama.  Think about what it is you want to listen to: you want something that sounds real, like you're there.  You want to invoke an emotional response. I was telling someone the other day about my Kickstarter and how much I needed to raise. At first, he was confused ("Isn't a podcast just a bunch of people talking? What kind of sound effects and editing do you really have to do?").  I explained to him that an audio drama requires A LOT more than your regular podcast, the sound design is far more complex.  With that being said, I want you to trust that your money is being invested in all aspects of the show.  That's precisely why I've hired Rick Coste (my trusted friend, mentor, and fellow audio drama producer), to help edit and I've hired Jeremy from Tangent Music LLC to design the score.  Rick's produced a good dozen or more audio dramas and he REALLY knows his stuff.  In fact, he's cast me in several of his projects and I absolutely adore his work.  With that being said -- so will you!  You can check out his work at www.modernaudiodrama.com (I'm partial to Waterguns & Rainbows and Charlie's Mailbox for obvious reasons hehe).  I fell in love with Jeremy's work when I heard the opening theme for Rick's latest Audio Drama "Pixie." You can check out Jeremy's work at www.tangentmusicllc.com.

So this is what your money is going towards!  Paying everyone involved, especially my actors (I REFUSE to do this audio drama holding money over the heads of the actors -- I've been that actor before who has started working on a project only to have it fall through and no compensation).  Time = money.  I think the hardest part of being a working voice actor/actor is that sometimes people expect you to do something for the exposure, or that you can wait until they have the money.  Just because I've been that person, doesn't mean I want to go that route.  I will do everything in my power to pay everyone, even from my own pocket (which keep in mind -- this budget isn't covering every single thing.  There are still things I will be paying out of my own pocket).

In a perfect world, I'd be making so much money I wouldn't need to crowdfund to produce this audio drama... but, I'm not that rich so I’m asking  for your help.  I hope this description has accurately portrayed my project means everything to me.  It's my baby.  I've spent hours and hours working on it!!

I also want you to know that this isn't my only source of fundraising.  I started making and selling Wish bracelets to supplement this fundraiser.  So far, with that fundraiser, I'm able to pay for my Kickstarter campaign items and get my theme song so I could produce this pitch video.

Can I also just go out on a limb and say how thankful I am to have so many supportive people in my life?  This wouldn't be possible without people like you. So thank you for being part of that circle.  Seriously.

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges are as follows: I don't get enough funding, I can't afford to pay for the project, it doesn't get completed in a timely manner.

How do I plan to overcome this? One of the main reasons I held off on crowd funding until I wrote BOTH SEASONS is because I didn't want to pull a George R.R. Martin (if you're not sure what that means... he wrote Game of Thrones and has yet to finish the series, and now HBO is ahead of him on the timeline... diehard fans are upset because he let us down in that regard). I want you to know the story itself is completed so that won't be a risk/challenge! My script is good to go, and I could record it tomorrow if I got all my funding today. Right now, I'm only funding for season 1 but if I were to get all $12,000 I need to do BOTH seasons... that would be phenomenal!! I'm hoping that you're going to LOVE season 1 so much that season 1 will help pay for season 2. Some of the costs for season 2 won't actually be as bad because I'll already have a lot of the score and what not taken care of from season 1, but I still have to pay for audio editing and voice actors.

I feel SO STRONGLY about my script that I think season 1 is going to be incredibly popular and I'll get the subscribers I need to keep it going.

I also want you to know that the reason I hired Rick Coste for post prod is because I want to avoid the risk/challenge of me trying to do it myself and then not being able to complete it because that isn't exactly my skill set at this time. I am still learning about it, so I don't have the ability to do an entire series on my own yet. This is how I'm overcoming that challenge.
