"The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope."
Feisty Acres is a certified organic game bird farm that raises all of its birds on pasture in Jamesport, nestled in the heart of the North Fork of Long Island. We offer meat and quail eggs for purchase on the farm and at select farmers markets in Suffolk County.
Now that our farm's meat production is up, running, and successful, we would like to concentrate upon building our not-for-profit activities--the first being our Bobwhite Quail Release Program.
Northern Bobwhite Quail, native to this part of the country and much of the Eastern Seaboard, have experienced a drastic decline in population over the past few decades, mostly due to habitat loss. Bobwhite Quail are an important component of our ecosystem here on the East End as a healthy population can help keep deer and dog tick populations in check as well as providing food for top-rung predators such as foxes and hawks.
How We're Going to Do It.
Since the Bobwhite Quail we're going to raise are solely for release in local state parks, preserves, or private land with a suitable habitat, we would like to ensure that as chicks and adolescents they experience minimal human contact. This is possible with the acquisition of a Surrogator.
Please follow this link for details on how the unit works.
During the spring and summer season, we would like to release 300 - 500 Bobwhite Quail using our Surrogator--and we would like to continue this practice for years to come. The Feisty Acres Bobwhite Quail Release program will also offer workshops and farm tours, plant identification classes, and opportunities for you to help us release birds when they are mature. We will also facilitate the purchase of seeds and saplings of native plant and tree species that help to create a suitable environment for Bobwhite's to thrive in and around the farm. We also promise to manage the land at Feisty Acres and Biophilia Organic Farm in a way to foster a suitable habitat for potential populations.
And This Can All Happen Now!
The best part about contributing to this campaign is that our Bobwhite Release program will begin THIS year in 2016. Because Feisty Acres is an already established farm with proper infrastructure and a seasoned farmer at the helm, our project can begin as soon as our goal is reached. Fuel, water, and feed requirements for the Surrogator have already been met and there is even a location on the farm already picked out for it to operate.
Detailed updates such as the arrival of Bobwhite chicks and weekly newsletters will be sent out until the day of release. Updates can also be found on the farm's blog: feistyfarmgirl.tumblr.com or Instagram Account @feistyacres
Risks and challenges
For Bobwhite Quail populations to gain a foot hold once more on the East End, suitable habitat is of the utmost importance. The biggest challenge we face is promoting members of the community to help preserve tracts of land in which these birds can thrive.
We at Feisty Acres plan to hold numerous workshops and informational sessions on what we can do as a community to do this and plan on partnering with local activist groups to spread the word.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
