Hey there, kids! Eric here, with a little homemade story for you.
I’ve been a full-time working musician for virtually all of my adult life, even since I was too young to be playing in some of the places where I was! Over the years, I’ve played and sung in all kinds of groups with all kinds of purposes: rock bands, bar bands, wedding bands, worship bands, jazz bands, pop bands, pit bands, polka bands, country bands, Celtic bands, choirs, chorales, folk duo-trio-quintaseptoctanonets, and even some groups for which there remains no clearly identifiable category (thank God). I’ve been part of some fine and successful efforts, and have received many kind and enthusiastic responses from audiences. Along the way, I’ve played many styles of music, as written by many, many, people. But only rarely have I ever been afforded the opportunity to perform the music of one certain still-obscure composer.
Yes, Dear Friends, in my relentless endeavor to pay the bills, I have hardly ever found the time, the place, the whole-hearted willful self-indulgence required to present my own songs and compositions before an audience. As I write you now, the end of a millennium has come and gone since the last time it happened! Nowadays, my work and circumstances don’t allow much for the cavalier adventures of a road warrior; and, truth be told, that lifestyle may not have been for me, anyway. Meanwhile, I have continued to pursue the craft of writing when the muse calls and time permits. But hey, what good is writing ‘em if no one ever hears ‘em? One certain collection of songs has been in the queue for some time - songs written from my heart and personal experience. There are other songs waiting too, but this batch is at the head of the line with its arms folded, waiting stubbornly for the bouncer to lift that velvet rope.
After years of chipping away at a proper recorded edition of these songs in my spare time, technology has finally caught up with my wallet and the means to complete a decent album have come within reach, even for a self-funded career musician, husband and father. Surprisingly, at the same time I have found myself with enough vacation time on the books to allow me to bring this project to satisfactory completion. Enough work is done and there are good folks around me to help with the rest. If you’re reading this, you might even be one of them!
But still, getting it done and out there ain’t exactly cheap. There are pieces of the puzzle to be filled in. It has become apparent to me and to everyone around me that this is indeed the time. It will however require a solid push, including the support of the friends and family that have made my life so blessed until now.
There is a team waiting in the wings to jump in and bring this thing over the finish line. We’ve set a timeline including the release date: November 7, 2014. We’ve set a budget that will enable us to put the album out in a simple but satisfactory form. As it stands now, I’m playing most of the instruments and doing much of the engineering myself. If there is additional support, we’ll be able to call in some fine players and technical folks to help round out the sound: playing, recording, mixing, mastering. Then it goes off to packaging and manufacture. We’ve identified who can do what and when. Now we just need to figure out how and how much.
We’ve set the goal modestly because we want this to happen; as you should know, it’s All-Or-Nothing: we either make the goal or no one contributes anything at all! In return for your contribution, I’m offering a big range of rewards, both items and experiences. Everything from an advance copy of the album for your own playback device to the Guitar Off My Back, all at donation levels designed to motivate and mobilize your participation in the short time that we have. The further we go over the goal, the more we’ll be able to raise the bar and make this something very good and special – perhaps even more so than I dare to hope for!
I hope you’ll join us on this adventure. God willing, it could be the start of something beautiful. If you have any questions, send me a message and I'll get reply back to you as quick as I can. Thanks for reading this, and for anything you choose to do. Blessings to you and yours!
Risks and challenges
From the date that this four-week campaign is complete (August 10th) to the official release date (November 7th) is just under 90 days. As I've mentioned, a good portion of the work is done, and I am continuing to work even as the campaign is underway. Once we have successfully completed the campaign, there are few if any potential obstacles.
Since this is a solo project, if something happens to me personally - some grave and unforeseen occurrence - that might of course slow things down. Not likely. By the time the campaign is complete, there will probably be enough album to release even in my complete absence! While I alone will remain fully accountable for the success of the project funded by this campaign, please know that the project team includes trusted advisors who will help me maintain transparency and who would certainly step in and help should I succumb to some terrible tragedy. Along the way, if anything does slow us down for good reason, I will give plenty of notice and stay in touch with all contributors until we cross the finish line.
So while we're on the subject, let me make one final request: along with any financial support you can give - or even if you can't make that kind of contribution - maybe you could say a wee little prayer for the success of this humble musical adventure. Where I come from, the power of THAT contribution can't possibly be overestimated!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
