About this project
I'm Elena Moon Park, and along with all-ages musician Dan Zanes and his label Festival Five Records, I will be recording an album of reinterpreted folk and children's songs from East Asia. It's an album we've been wanting to make for years.
We are trying something new with this album: that is to appeal directly to our listeners, supporters, friends and peers to make it happen. With your help we will be able to record these songs in collaboration with a fantastic, diverse and wide-ranging community of musicians and artists. In return for your support of this exciting project, we will send you a gift expressing our gratitude.
We hope you will join us!
Why am I doing this?
Traveling around America with Dan Zanes and Friends, I’ve been lucky to meet children and families from all different cultures. They've inspired me to explore my own heritage, and I quickly discovered that there is not a lot of Korean, Japanese, Chinese or Taiwanese folk music available in this country, especially when it comes to family music. By creating this album I hope to bring even just a handful of all-ages folk songs from those traditions to families here in the United States and around the world.
This is such a personal journey for me because I’ve found that traditional songs can connect us to our culture and history in unique ways. I’ve already learned a great deal about my cultural roots, and I believe others will have the same meaningful experience no matter their age or background. Best of all, the songs I’ve found are fun and delightful and I am very excited to share them with you!
How will we make this happen?
We plan to reinterpret and arrange folk songs from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and Tibet with original artwork accompanying descriptions of each song. We will record the songs with both traditional Asian instruments and Western folk instruments, singing lyrics in both native languages and English. This album will involve a large number of musicians, writers and artists in and around NYC, making it a truly collaborative effort. Because of the number of people that will participate, we've set a high budget & need all the support we can get. And as always, when the album is finished, a portion of the proceeds will go to organizations that support youth development and the arts.
REMEMBER: Your donation will only be processed when and if we reach our goal on May 1st. Thank you for your interest and support!
