Many people make dinosaur fossil replicas, but they are either not accurate/poor quality, or they are far too expensive for most people to afford. This is something we want to change. Our goal is to create museum quality, fully accurate fossil replicas for affordable prices.
This is just the start of the Desktop Collection from Paleo Productions. We have plans to do over 40 different museums quality skulls, starting with this nanotyrannus / juvenile tyrannosaurus rex skull. This is where we need your help! We plan to 3D print "master" skulls from the digitally sculpted model that we can then mold, cast, and paint.
This first skull replica is right at 10 inches in length, which equates to being a 1:3 scale replica of this particular genus/species. Others in our Desktop Collection will range from 10 to 12 inches in length.
We 3D printed our prototype on a small FDM printer, so we had to print it at a lower resolution and in multiple pieces. The final, production models will be at even higher resolutions and printed with one solid piece for the cranium and one solid piece for the mandible. We can do this with the use or large SLS style 3D printers, which can print with incredibly accurate tolerances.
The $1,000 we are asking for is to cover the costs of the master, highresolution, SLS 3D prints, the molding/casting materials, as well as the finishing materials. Once we get this first project funded, we will expand to other skull releases based on the revenue we bring in with this first model. The ultimate plan is to release a new skull every month or two, including a large number of lesser known genus and species.
We cannot express our appreciation for your help, and we can't wait to get this project rolling! Many of the skulls models are already digitally sculpted and ready for production. We just need your help to turn them into a physical reality. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
Why am I qualified to do this project? Well that story begins 25 years ago. Like many young paleontologists, paleoartists, and dinosaur enthusiasts, my love for dinosaurs started when I was young and saw Jurassic Park for the first time. Since that moment, dinosaurs have been my passion and life.
I have a degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 3D animation/ visual effects with a focus on 3D modeling and simulation. It was at that time, 8 years ago that I started working with 3D printing and mold making and casting. After I obtained my degree from SCAD, I attended Columbus State University where I studied Geology and Paleontology. Since then, I decided to put my love and experience with 3D artistry together with my passion for paleontology.
There are challenges that come with the project because the operation is just being done by myself and my wonderful wife/business partner. If we get an extremely large rush of orders, we could get slightly behind in production. Our plan to account for this potential issue is producing a larger number of molds in order to create a higher volume of casts at a much faster rate. This should account for larger rushes, especially with the holiday season already upon us in a few short months.
While challenges are always a part of starting a new project, I have years of experience in working on deadline driven production teams. Beyond that, like many of the people interested in this project, dinosaurs are a passion and a labor of love. We absolutely can't wait to get this project rolling, and with your help I know it can be a HUGE success!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
