Red Barton & The Sky Pirates is an arcade combat flight shooter. If you remember "Star Fox" from N64, or for veterans of the arcades "After Burner", you'll immediately understand what kind of a game this is. All that action with a lot of style game, with gorgeous hand-drawn quality in-game graphics set in an imaginative cartoon-style steampunk world. The player is thrust into the role of Red Barton, a pilot of a steampunk-style World War I era fighter airplane fighting his way through a menagerie of enemies in four different themed worlds, on a mission to save his love and honor.
We are enthusiastic gamers and when we set off to make one, we were looking into what we were missing on the app stores, not really what was already there. Being massive arcade shooter fans our natural instinct was to make it our mission to make more of the kind of games we want to play.

Following is a small story, and an introduction to the world of Red Barton & The Sky Pirates.
In a remote corner of the Milky Way, on a planet lost between the stars, in the solar system called Diamas by ancient astronomers, there is a rich planet-kingdom of Diamondtopia. Since times long forgotten, this lush and rich beyond imagination land has been ruled over by the mighty Diamund dinasty.
The Diamund dinasty had a long line of peaceful, benevolent kings who brought peace, justice and prosperity to the entire world of Diamondtopia using their wealth and power to bring balance and prosperity to all the lands far and wide. But the peace wasn’t going to last.
Breaking away with that long held tradition, king Diamund III became a cruel king that decided to rule the entire known universe with an iron fist. Greedy beyond comprehension and deaf to the plight of his people oppressed by his regime, he exploited his kingdom’s sacred diamonds and traded them with sinister solar forces to create a well-armed and blood-thirsty army he unleashed on the entire civilized universe.
Neighboring planets were falling one by one, until the legions of Diamondtopia were stopped in their march by forces of planet Reluxa. Reluxa, a small planet renown for its magic technology was shielded from Diamund’s rage and envy by the mighty magical shield created by the legendary Old Ones of Reluxa before time existed. It’s inhabitants lived peacefully for millennia unaware of their surroundings, rarely engaging in any trading, and avoiding contacts with the neighbouring worlds. This elusiveness has allowed them to become nothing more than a legend for many worlds in the system.
But King Diamund knew about them and yearned for their technology based on ancient power of magic, but it remained beyond his brutal acquisition methods. Only Red Barton, his trusted Red Guards General in Command, could infiltrate the tiny world and steal its secrets as he was granted access after showing kindness to Reluxan people in need in his young days. However, disgusted by King’s arrogance and evil, and not wanting to betray his friends Barton refused the order to proceed with the conquest of the magical kingdom. Since ancient times, his family has devoted their lives to the kingdom and led the Order of Red Guard, the Empire’s flying knights. Following the ancient code of the Order, he could no longer ignore it's tenets or the moral legacy of the Red Guard.
In a final attempt to reason with the king, Barton implored King Diamund’s daughter Gisele, who he was secretly courting, to confront the King's plans in the Royal Hall. Suddenly becoming aware of their mutual attraction, and deeming him unworthy of his daughter and a traitor of his agenda, the King erupted in fury, banning Red Barton from the kingdom and locking his only child in the tallest tower of his mighty castle.
With all his titles and lands removed, dispossessed of all honors and privileges, Barton escaped the castle in his trusty Red Guard Skyfighter to the Outer Rims of Diamas, leaving his love and his whole life behind.
On the brink of desperation, on the edge of the solar system, where only Sky Pirates and outcasts make their living he implored for the Reluxans and Sky Pirates assistance. Turning to the very people he was ordered to conquer and enslave, he asked for their help in stopping the mad king, restoring his family and planet honor and bringing back peace to the Diamas.

The game is separated in four levels, or worlds, each with a specific geography and enemy types that are trying to stop you from finishing your mission. Below you can have a short read on each of the levels, along with the short description of the level boss you will encounter. The level images are 3D renders utilizing the actual objects found in the individual game levels, however these being artist renderings, they do not represent the actual game-play of Red Barton. The actual game-play can be seen in the trailer accompanying this Kickstarter, mapped onto the mobile device screen.
The World of Red Barton & The Sky Pirates
Desert world of Diamondtopia, and first ring of defense of King Diamund’s castle. The level boss is a mighty rotating turret called Desert Swine operated by General Porkmel.
Canyon-river of Diamondtopia, and the second ring of defense of King Diamund’s castle. The level boss is riding a submarine armed with guns and rockets and accompanied with smaller rocket launching platforms. Submarine can submerge which makes it invulnerable for a short while. The submarine is called Volt de Strike, manned by mighty General Volt.
Walled-canyon of Diamondtopia, and the third ring of defense of King Diamund’s castle. The level boss is a huge rotating mine launching platform with an electricity lighting zapper canyon that slows Red Barton done to half a speed and drains a small amount of shield on every hit. The machine is called Bloom Blaster, operated by General Bloom.
The caves deep beneath Diamondtopia, and the last ring of defense of King Diamund’s castle. The mighty level boss is a real Reluxan piece of technology, beautiful and very deadly. It is operated by captured, tortured and brainwashed Duke Relxar, a Reluxan captured by trickery and enslaved by King Diamund. It has unknown weaponry and magic shielding, and unknown vulnerabilities which will make it a real challenge for the players.
Red Barton & The Sky Pirates is our little indie studio's first large-scale game project. What you see in front of you is our whole team's true labor of love, an epitome of what indie game studio development is in spirit and execution. We worked around the clock to get this far, driven our loved ones to insanity with late, late hours spent on the project, disappeared of the face of the Earth for our friends and relatives, missed birthdays and weddings, but came to the point where we feel that we've created a solid case for Red Barton.
We're looking to raise enough support to finish and promote our game so we can see it through the end without any compromise on quality within a realistic deadline. We also have goals extending well beyond of mobile!
- We are in full development mode of the PC/Mac version of our game which is worked on parallel to the iOS/Android one by the same team. It's slated to have a lot of features such as hi-poly models, high-end effects and many enhancements to gameplay compared to already amazing mobile gameplay.
The features that need more development power (and rely on this campaign for earlier delivery) are:
- Hi-poly instead of low-poly geo
- Many visual effects, such as DOF, enhanced environment lighting, particles and physically more accurate water
- Added particle based weapons vs the mobile version
- Much more detailed level geometry
- More detailed and harder to beat enemies
Also, we have a lot of rewards to our backers, and some of the major ones are actual hand-made works of art made for the backers that need to be budgeted. Below is a breakdown of costs and how we are going to use the resources from the campaign should it be successful. We tried to make this as comprehensive as possible.
And here is a mandatory pie chart for the fans!
We are going to maintain full transparency throughout the process, and we are very responsive to our potential backers feedback. Please hit us up for any clarifications!
There is only a few months left in this year, and we are putting a lot of stock into you, the Kickstarter gamer community to help us bring Red Barton to the stores this year. If you like our game and would like to support us, we are going to give some really awesome and beautifully designed rewards. Below you can see examples of some of the rewards for our supporters. Please check the full reward list and ask anything you'd like to know!
We have revealed quite a lot to you on this page, but there is much, much more to see and experience in our game. The game trailer video on this Kickstarter page contains the video capture of actual gameplay, so you can see how far ahead we are. At this point, we have all the levels, and most of the game functionality in a fully functional game alpha prototype.
In the next weeks/months until the release we will press forward with finishing touches on music, and polishing the already smooth playability even more.
Also, we are in the final stage of entering Red Barton & The Sky Pirates into the Steam Greenlight! Fingers crossed - we will update you on that as soon as we know the outcome and if you can help - please do! Steam release of Red Barton will be a bit staggered from the mobile releases as we want to use our original high-resolution models and richer visual effects for the PC versions of the game.
We are very gung-ho about Red Barton, we love what we do and with your help - we will be able to do more of what we love with greater ease!
Stay tuned, please support and share our Kickstarter campaign, follow the FAQ updates - and above everything - accept are sincere gratitude for supporting us - it means a lot!

Risks and challenges
The game design and game elements are locked-and-loaded. Sure, we have a lot of polishing and game make-up left to do, and we'll poke until the day before the release - but our game is constantly tested on goal platforms, and technically and artistically we are in a good place, and only getting the game to look and feel even better.
However, we are very reliant on this Kickstarter campaign to provide us with some financial breathing space so we can focus on the final push and get Red Barton &The Sky Pirates in front of the gaming community.
The only wild card at the moment is Steam Greenlight, as we are entering the approval process, but we have every reason to feel optimistic about it! We didn't plan the game to be on Steam at all, but once we started thinking about it, it made perfect sense so we decided to seriously court the idea, and now we are going for it. We'll keep you posted!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
