About this project
WHAT’S THE PROJECT GOAL?
To record an epic soundtrack of exhilarating, inspiring, and uplifting music for YOUR life story.
Influenced by iconic film scores and anthemic pop/rock, I’ve written a soundtrack that would be at home in any Hollywood film: epic and exhilarating at times, soothing and uplifting at others. This is music for the human experience, and I need your help to bring it to life!
For 20 years, I’ve had the honor of creating and performing music with other artists, many of whom are household names. All that time, I’ve dreamed of recording a project of my own, and finally, I believe the time is right.
Until you’ve been in the deepest valley, you won't appreciate the mountaintop - and an artist’s work always reflects that. Until I experienced my share of trials, I hadn't written enough music with real weight or depth; music that might help someone else going through trials of their own.
I’ve written plenty of adventurous “up” material, but I wanted to deliver a well-rounded experience that anyone can relate to. There are moments of joy and exhilaration in this music, but also longing, desperation, and pain. And like any good adventure, it resolves with healing and restoration - with a few jolts of adrenaline along the way - so I believe it's a soundtrack for the full human experience.
Music has accompanied the darkest moments of my life as well as the most joyous. It’s one of God’s best gifts; He uses it in amazing ways to encourage and to inspire, and even to help when we need healing. I believe this music can do that for someone else, as it has for me.
WHAT WILL IT SOUND LIKE?
It’s inspired by iconic film scores by John Williams (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Schindler’s List), James Horner (Apollo 13, Braveheart), Hans Zimmer (Gladiator) and James Newton Howard (Lady In The Water, Blood Diamond), along with some pop/rock elements from artists like Genesis, U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel, Enya, Bruce Hornsby and Bach. Crazy mix, I know. Trust me, it works! Here's just a small sampling of music I've written in the past:
WHY DO I NEED YOUR HELP?
While I often use computers to approximate what I hear in my head, there’s simply nothing like a real symphony playing in a world-class scoring stage. That’s what it's going to take to capture this music with the highest levels of excellence.
At a minimum budget (the Kickstarter goal I’ve set here) I can get this record made and it will be good. It will have a modest string section, a basic rhythm section and some featured soloists. Everything else would have to be done with computers. I do that for a living and I’m good at it, but doing this with living, breathing, passionate musicians... that would take it to a whole other level.
If we can get to $35,000 or more, I can make a truly epic record with full string, brass and rhythm sections, more featured players and more material. Incidentally, it used to cost ten times that to do a record like this, but thanks to some unique opportunities, we can do something unprecedented at this level.
I’m willing to take some big risks to do this. I’ve already blocked out my calendar (other than a few tour dates), which means no other income while I work on this - and I believe it will be worth it. If we hit the minimum goal, we’ll start recording in June and if all goes as planned, the project will deliver by late this summer.
WHAT ARE THE ACTUAL COSTS?
Every penny raised will go to the people who work on the project, all of whom are as good as it gets. The more we raise, the more we can record and the better the results will be. Here are both the minimal and ideal budget options; anything beyond that will of course make the project even better:
MINIMUM BUDGET - $20,000 (Kickstarter Goal)
$ 8,500 - drums, bass, featured soloists, studio time, engineer & misc. production costs
$ 8,800 - small string section, orchestration, engineers, studio time, cartage & admin fees
$ 3,400 - mastering, printing, CD manufacturing & shipping
IDEAL BUDGET - $35,000
$12,250 - drums, bass, guitars, more featured soloists, studio time, engineers & misc. production costs
$16,150 - full string & brass sections, orchestration, engineers, studio time, cartage & admin fees
$ 6,600 - mastering, printing, CD manufacturing & shipping
OK, I WANT TO HELP. HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Kickstarter makes this REALLY simple and risk free. Simply check out the pledge levels and rewards. When you find one you like, click on it and follow the directions.
The great thing about Kickstarter for backers is that it’s all-or-nothing: your card won’t be charged until we hit the goal.
If for some reason we don’t hit the goal, this whole thing implodes; no money changes hands, and I’m left poor and destitute back at the drawing board ;-)
...but I’m taking the chance that won’t happen because you’re an AWESOME friend and supporter, you appreciate the power of great music, and you want this to succeed. That's why we're buds. And if we're not yet, we need to fix that!
OK, I've got an album to work on. In the meantime, here's a little taste of the music to come. Enjoy, and thanks for your help!
Risks and challenges
I’m really the one assuming all the risks with this project. Again, you won’t be charged a penny unless and until the minimum goal is met.
Of course with any creative endeavor or one involving manufacturing, there is the potential for unforeseen delays or unexpected circumstances - sickness, technical issues, acts of God, etc. Apart from those things, there’s no reason this project shouldn’t stay on course.
1. I’m a music industry veteran of 20 years, and my reputation is on the line. If I fail to deliver, it reflects on me. In the rare case something gets delayed, you can count on thorough communication and resolution.
2. I've waited 20 years to do this, so I want to do it with excellence. There are lots of variables in a project this complex, but I’ve spent YEARS dreaming, planning and working towards this. I’m ready, and I will give it everything I’ve got.
Ultimately, I want to create an inspiring work of art that will impact your life, echo in eternity, and bring glory to God, who gave us this gift in the first place. It truly is a gift, and I hope to share it with you! LET’S DO THIS!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
