The Student Lounge is a durational and collaborative performance where 13 students and alumni from Maryland Institute College of Art will perform in a burlesque show that will occur at a location on or near MICA's campus. The performance will occur in late April of 2016.
The goal of the Student Lounge is to explore the ways that identity politics, performance art and academia can be in conversation with one another. The Student Lounge performers hope to challenge the audience to think about what narratives belong in academia and how broadening our horizons can create a more inclusive and exciting academic environment.
Each of our performers will provide the audience with a glimpse into their inner worlds, using the art of performance and dance to combine their experiences in school with their personal lives. The common thread between all of the performers is that we participate (or not) in systems that are viewed as helping us achieve agency/empowerment or victimization/objectification and the ways that these worlds can become blurred or tangled together.
This one night only, interactive and immersive experience is open to the public! Of course, we want this performance to be intellectually engaging but it will also be fun and entertaining! The performances will evoke a broad range of emotions. Sexiness, silliness, intensity, passion, curiosity, surprise. There is something for everyone at the Student Lounge!
We are asking for the MINIMUM amount that we need to make this project possible. However, any additional funds raised will be used to to pay our performers more and to make the set more elaborate for your viewing pleasure. Please review our budget proposal:
Performer's fees: $1000
Security fees: $200
Set construction materials: $400
Printed materials fee: (posters, show programs, photographs):$300
Food and beverages for staff and performers during the show: $100
Kickstarter and processing fees (10% of money earned): $200
This project is extremely ambitious and with your financial support, we are certain that this will pay off to be a show not to be missed! By donating, you are setting an example for how artist labor should be valued!
Risks and challenges
Of course, all ambitious and innovative projects can face unforeseen obstacles. We have spent a great deal of time considering what challenges might arise while bringing the Student Lounge to fruition. We have also come up with a plan to make the process go as smoothly as possible.
The first step after we receive our funding will be construction and advertising the performance. This part of the project will take a lot of work. Fortunately, we are teaming up with Baltimore's 14 Carat Cabaret, a performance venue founded in the 1980s, dedicated to hosting emerging and established performances. We have organized a team of MICA students who will be responsible for the construction and logistical planning of the performance. We plan to spend the next two months advertising and promoting our event through social media, advertisements and word of mouth!
Every member of the Student Lounge Performance has unique talents and assets that they contribute to the project. Every person, from peers assisting with construction to the performers themselves, are collaborating to ensure that this project is successful. A special quality of the Student Lounge team is that we are all friends. We are whole-heartedly invested in making this performance a reality and are all unified in that we are dedicated students contributing to the Baltimore art scene. Furthermore, we will not be doing everything alone as we have the support of the student body as well the the support of an outside venue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
