ONE-ARMED BANDIT: A FAMILY AFFAIR
“When you win, nothing hurts”- Joe Namath
Although millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet, many head to the casino for a chance to turn their luck around. Today, there is no need to travel to Las Vegas or Atlantic City for a gambling fix. Casinos have sprung up in people's back yards all across America.
I have unique access to and perspective on this issue. I am from a family of gamblers and I'm not immune to the pull of the casino. I will be able to explore this without condescension or cliche. It's an especially fascinating subject right now, given the economy. Why do American working people choose to spend their money this way? What is it about the experience and the environment (risk, chance, excitement not found elsewhere, glamour) that appeals to them? What drives them? How is this different from their normal routine? Is it addiction or just escape? Are there consequences? There are complex motivations to be uncovered here.
This idea was born out of my own experiences within my family. When I started talking ,with people outside my family, about this doc everyone seemed to say "that's just like my _____(fill in the blank w/name of family member)".
We've been shooting for over a year and a casino even rolled out the red carpet for us to shoot some critical footage.Getting approval to shoot in a casino is no easy feat as you can imagine.
I'm counting on your support to get to the next step in completion of this doc. I need to enlist the help of an Editor when I have the rough-cut in place. I've set a modest but crucial goal for this campaign.
I believe this can be a powerful doc that will strike a chord with more people than one might think.
Thanks everyone. I'm forever grateful if you can contribute to this Kickstarter goal. For those that can't be a financial backer, I'd very much appreciate if you would spread the word during this limited campaign.
Warm regards, Karen
A little bit about me:
As with my last two documentaries, I finish what I start.
My first doc, BEGGING NAKED was awarded grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Ford Foundation and is now in the permanent collection of The Library of Congress, a rare honor. It also attracted the attention of my film heroes:
- "an amazing documentary about an extraordinary person...I find it fascinating both from a personal level, as the life of this woman, and on a social level, as observations about art, the sex industry and the road to homelessness."-Roger Ebert
- "Really devastating and well made. Congrats on a successful film."-Martin Scorsese
BEGGING NAKED continues to be broadcast worldwide and is available on premier on demand video platforms such as iTunes and Amazon.
My second feature documentary focused on the legendary NYC barbershop, Astor Place Hairstylists. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, it aired on PBS' Channel THIRTEEN.
I hope you will come on-board for this 3rd endeavor with me. I will do my very best to put out a picture you will be proud to have helped complete.
Risks and challenges
I am able to take this project up to a certain point on my own. However,I need the expert skills of a seasoned and highly imaginative Editor to take it to the finish line. I also have a piece of music that I want to use and that has a price tag attached. These are my challenges moving forward.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
