Playwright Sandra Stone and composers Theresa Koon and John Vergin have created three short linked operas that reflect life in our challenging times. In the first, Poof, we have a Mime who is ineffectual; a Dandy who is no dandy, a Directrice with nothing to direct. In An Imperfect Place to Dispose of Flies, a woman and man confront issues of identity, and the ambiguity of memory. In the third piece, What Everything Is, a woman at a seaside hotel experiences an epiphany and offers hope for continuing on.
Long in gestation, these works will receive two staged concert performances at Portland's Artists Repertory Theatre this November 16 & 17. In collaboration with the instrumental ensemble Fear No Music, the performances will feature some of Portland's finest singers and players. ART's former artistic director, Allen Nause, is the stage director. The music director is Jeffrey Payne.
The project has received a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and much in-kind support, especially from ART. However, more financial help is needed in order to pay the singers and instrumentalists. And so we are turning to you. All donations to Poof, Flies & Everything are tax-deductible. We are delighted to be working with Fear No Music, who is providing the 501C3 non-profit umbrella for our fund-raising. A special project account has been set up to receive the funds from Kickstarter at the end of the campaign. In addition to a receipt from Kickstarter, all donors will receive a thank-you from Fear No Music which includes their Tax ID number to use when filing taxes.
We have kept our goal reasonable in order to be certain we reach it. We understand that some of you may not be in a position to support our project financially at this time. We ask that you forward this page to people you know who may be interested in helping. Anything, even the smallest donation, will bring us closer to our goal. If you are able to give, we hope you will contribute even after our goal is reached. Portland musicians deserve to be paid at a level commensurate with other cities. The more we raise, the more we can pay our wonderful performers. For this reason, we are only offering a few rewards for donations. We hope your interest in supporting us will be rewarded by the successful future of the project. Thank-you so much!
Risks and challenges
The artistic challenges of the project have been met. The material has been written. and is being shaped as rehearsals continue.
The next hurdle is to secure funding.
In the midst of it all, Theresa and John are always at work on other creative music projects; and Sandra continues to pour out marvelous poetry and prose at a great rate.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
