About this project
For 300 years, Victoriano's family has cared for the last remaining footbridge of the Incan Empire. Now his children have the chance to leave their village. Yuri has a burning desire to travel the world, and is studying in the city while his brother Vidal is heading to the capital, Lima, as a musician and a hairdresser. Laurita is still living on the farm with her dad, walking to school every day and wondering what comes next, for her, and for her father, the last Bridge Master. For one year, we will follow them as the sons experience the wonder, the excitement, and the discrimination of the big city. At the same time, the Bridge Master forges ahead, carrying on their inherited and honored tradition. Will Laurita follow her brothers' path away from her father and the sacred role of their ancestors? Or will she stay, in spite of a culture that does not allow women to inherit the Bridge Master role?
Budget and Timeline:
All the groundwork for this film has been laid. Elisa has been to the bridge, met the Bridge Master and his family, even slept in his hut and been declared "godmother" of a new building on his farm! We have connected with our main characters and begun developing relationships with non-profits and cultural organizations in the Andes. There is great potential to partner with indigenous organizations working on cultural preservation among the Quechua people. We have great hopes for this film, internationally and in Peru. Our own hearts are committed to this project and to these people.
Now, we need you, people of Kickstarter, to help us get going on this. Reaching this campaign goal will go a long way to propelling us forward to completion. With your contributions we will be able to get to Peru to begin filming, as well as pick up a few equipment items we need. Our plan is to live in the Peruvian Andes while we film over the next year, and your donations are key to making that happen. We plan on arriving in Victoriano's village in June to film the annual bridge rebuilding ceremony and staying on after that.
Noonday Films has screened documentaries across North America for the last 6 years. We have won awards at 2 major film festivals and have had our films broadcast and distributed. Matthew Leahy, our storyteller extraordinaire and Elisa Stone, our cinematographer just happened to be married, which makes it nice. Also, Elisa is Peruvian American and can't wait to be back home for this film.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION Your donation is tax deductible!!! The Last Bridge Master is a fiscally sponsored project of the International Documentary Association (IDA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Contributions on behalf of Noonday Films are payable to IDA and are tax deductible less the value of any goods or services received, as allowed by law. The value of goods and services being offered is noted under each donation level. If you would like to deduct the entire donation you have the option to simply decline the reward at check out.
Risks and challenges
There are many challenges to this project, including:
-Fundraising. After this Kickstarter campaign we have a variety of grants we are applying to for the remaining part of our budget.
-Moving our family of 5 to Peru in June, as well as shooting a film while caring for our children. Thankfully, we are accustomed to creative work with little ones underfoot. And we have supportive family in Peru to assist us in the transition.
-Capturing significant moments in the lives of our subjects. As with any documentary, it is a tricky thing to be where you need to be when you need to be there. Having already established trust with our subjects we are optimistic about keeping lines of communication open regarding what is happening in their lives. Also, we will be living close by for the duration of the year.
-Several other items include legal paperwork and Matthew developing his Spanish. With Elisa's Peruvian citizenship, our legalities are mostly just hoops to jump through rather than insurmountable obstacles, but it will take a bit of time to get documents in order. We have planned for that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
