About this project
I’m Cathy Beasley, the writer and director of The Scapegoat. First of all, I would just like to personally thank you all for taking the time to consider this project. Film is my passion and I am so grateful to be able to pursue it. And a lot of that thanks goes to you all. So thank you.
Okay, let’s dive into the plot a bit…
Sonia, Aurelio, and Trevor are three jewel thieves who've been put together to play out the perfect jewel heist. However, when things go wrong their boss tells them to hideout in Venice, Italy until he figures a few things out. But no good will come from this. The only way out of this mess is for one of them to take the blame so the other two can get away free and clear. But who's going to volunteer for that? Their friendship begins to fade quite quickly when they all realize they are more than willing to shove each other in front of the bus to save their own selves. So who will take the fall? Who will be the scapegoat? They better come up with the answer fast, or else their boss will turn them all in.
It's about three people who genuinely want to be friends. They are looking for that connection in this life. These are the only people they can really be themselves around. But all that changes when they're asked to turn their backs on one of them. They're looking for someone to latch onto, but if they get too close now they'll just end up getting hurt. How do you ask a friend to go to prison for you? It's a tough situation, and these three people will have to decide how they're going to deal with it.
Production in Venice, Italy…
I will be filming in Venice, Italy this summer for about 3 weeks. It will be a very minimal crew.
I'm very excited to be working with the fantastic Director of Photography, Fernando Mamede. He has a brilliant eye and makes the most beautiful objects come to life onscreen. I am thankful to have met him in film school, especially since he made my short films look stunningly beautiful.
I am also very lucky to have the talented Cheryl Beasley as our costume designer. She truly makes the characters come to life with her beautiful creations and designs.
The money raised will go toward the locations, the travel expenses of my four actors, plus their room and board. I would like to pay my director of photography a little, and also his room and board. Plus food is a major component of filming. Permits and film insurance goes into this budget as well. Honestly most of this money is going to keep my crew and actors comfortable. They work so hard and I want to be able to take care of them.
If we surpass the $10,000 amount I would love to be able to use the remaining money to allow my actors and crew to be more comfortable on this set. I am so grateful for their work and I would like to give them the best possible conditions I can.
Once the film is completed I am looking into submitting it to online distributors. We live in such a great time that people can make films and then are allowed to share them with the world. And hopefully the viewers will all enjoy it and be inspired to go out and make their own films.
A little about me…
I studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy and have been continuing my learning on various film sets ever since. I love filmmaking. It is what I love to do. And thankfully I have been able to learn a lot over the years. I’ve done quite a few short films, and have completed one feature film.
Why I chose to do this film…
I love the beauty of these characters and the fact that they are almost living in another world. Sometimes one might forget that they’re actually jewel thieves. This film also gives me a chance to explore my love for the French new wave cinema style of filmmaking. I loved that era where people just went out and made films. I think nowadays we as filmmakers are able to do that again.
Independent film has come so far in these last couple years. Now we all are given the chance to live out our dreams. And mostly because of people like you.
I will be making the film in black and white and hopefully giving that Fellini and Godard feel mixed with my own vision. These characters are very beautiful, staying in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, however what they do as a job is far from beautiful. It’s as if they’re masquerading themselves to hide their truth.
Thank you all so much again. Because of people like you, we artists are allowed to create. I thank you a million times over. You all truly are amazing!
