About this project
So what’s all this about then?
Oh, hey there, my name is Tara Abbamondi. I’m a cartoonist living in the wild farmlands of northern New Jersey. I’ve been drawing comics for years and in 2010 I ventured into the world of self-publishing.
So… you’re here… why?
Well, comics, of course, but more specifically comic travelogues. For those that may not know what a comic travelogue is, it’s essentially a comic documentation of a trip taken for various reasons. Since I started drawing comics, I’ve been in love with the idea of travelogues. The idea of “tagging along” on someone’s journey of self-discovery as they travel to places they’ve never been, and sharing, in a sense, all those new experiences with them.
On this journey to Ireland, I not only hope to explore my heritage, but I also hope to find out a bit more about myself as well. After the sudden upheaval of my life I find myself standing at a crossroads, being given a chance to have brand new experiences, and also to reflect on the old ones. I feel like in order to really know who I am, I need to find out where I came from.
ROOTS | O’Connor and Coyle
I’ve always been interested in my roots, and over the years I’ve delved into my family history, and discovered them. Well, a decent chunk of them! And that’s when I decided to take it one step further. It’s one thing to hear about them or see pictures, but it’s another thing entirely to see where they came from, and to experience it firsthand. And it’s not just O’Connors and it’s not just Coyles. It’s Mahoneys, it’s Wards, it’s Ramseys, and so on. The tree is a tall one as I’m coming to find, with many branches, some severed and unknown. So I’m extremely excited to explore this family history further and share it with all of you. I’m hoping you’ll all join me as I step out of my comfort zone and plant my feet someplace new.
OK. Fair enough, so… you need me, why?
Yes! Without all of you lovely folks, my dream of making this book wouldn’t happen! With your help I can afford the costs to print the book, but to also draw the book while I’m abroad. The funds for this kickstarter will go towards printing the books (for the kickstarter backers, as well as any 2015 conventions I attend), all shipping costs for the books, supplementing materials for the backers, paying for amazon/kickstarter fees, and supplementing my travel funds.
I’ll be staying for 2-3 weeks give or take, and the trip will take place in October/November of this year. The book, “Roots”, will run about 100+ pages and will be completed mostly throughout the trip in the evenings/mornings (yayyy, Jetlag).
But that’s not all, look at all these cool rewards you can get if you pledge!

Recently someone asked "Will there be stretch goals??"
YES, yes there will be stretch goals! Annnd what are they? Well, here you go:
If we reach $2,500, I will up the paper quality of the book, pages and cover! I'll also be able to order MORE books. Plus ALL pledge levels will gain access to the private process blog! (MET!!! Thank you!!)
If we reach $3,000, there will be an exclusive print shipped out for ALL $20+ pledges. The print will also be available as a second digital wallpaper for the $10 pledge level. ALSO, at the $15 pledge level, it will include 4 PDFS! Instead of 2! So you won't have to choose, you'll get Roots, Puddles, On the Morrow, and the Stolen Lovelight! (MET!!! THANK YOU!!)
If we reach $3,500, I will be printing up mini posters of my journey! Inspired by my talk with Jason Ford, I'll be including a detailed map of my travels from Belfast, to Roscommon, to Longford, to Dublin, and anywhere else my family roots take me. This map will then be included in all $20+ reward levels! A PDF of the map will be provided to all other levels. I'll also be able to add more material like pictures, stories, and just continue to make this book the best I can possibly make it. (MET!!! Thank you!!!)
Any excess funds will go towards making the book better, in every way, shape, or form. I'll be able to see more, experience more, and share more with all of you through the book and the process blog as well! Once funding is over I'll be sending out the password for the blog so you can all keep up with everything that has happened. And as a reminder--everyone now will have access to the process blog as long as you've backed! Even if you've selected "no reward"! Sketches, comics, drawings, pictures, and updates before, during, and after the trip!
Unofficial stretch goals? Small add-ons as we near the end of the campaign!!
$4,000 Backer Giveaway! If we reach 4,000 before Thursday, I will choose a backer at random and upgrade their pledge to the next available level! Woo! Fancy! Backer will be chosen at random (random number generator!) on Thursday after the campaign officially closes! (MET!!! You guyyyyyys. I love all of you, seriously.)
$4,500! Sticker fun! Fun with stickers! A 2x2 inch matte sticker will be included in the $20+ pledge levels! Image forthcoming! (MET!!! THANK YOUUU!!!)
$5,000! Adding an ink wash to the pages!!! Kind of annoyed at myself for not thinking of doing this earlier, I think it will add a lot to the mood of the book!
UPDATE: If you would like PDFs of my comic collection thus far, add $7 onto any level at or over $20 that requires shipping!
And there you have it!
Thank you so much for taking the time to view my kickstarter, and even more thanks if you decide to contribute to it! And even if you can’t, sharing, blogging, tweeting, it’s all appreciated! You have all my thanks, eternal gratitude, and undying love! I really couldn’t do this without you!
Here are some examples of rewards!
Full-color commission! (Available at the $70 and $250 pledge level)
Cover & Preview for the mini-comic "In Your Wake" (Available at the $30 pledge level)
And the 5X7 Sketch Commission (Available at the $45 pledge level)
Risks and challenges
While this is my first kickstarter, it's not my first crowdfunding experience. If the goal is met, the book will be done and printed by March. Since it's only me, I'm not relying on anyone else for pages or colors or lettering, it's just me. Rewards like the process blog are awesome fun for backers because I want to share the process with you all as I work on the book, and it also doubles to keep me motivated so I always have something to show you!
If I'm funded I'm going to try my best to pre-order the paper for the book so that it will be ready when the book is done to hopefully diminish any printing delays.
Other risks, as always, includes postage. Sometimes things get lost in the mail, if that does happen, I will act accordingly and make sure lost items get replaced as promptly as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
