Jeremy is getting a ride back to Los Angeles from a wedding in Monterry, CA with a rather intoxicated married couple that he barely knows. He's asleep in the backseat but a rather loud argument wakes him up. As they go back and forth with their drunken invectives, Jeremy takes out a photo strip of his ex girlfriend and almost throws it out the window.
All of a sudden the car runs out of gas, the wife vomits out the window and the husband decides to start drinking because they have to wait for AAA to come. Unable to handle the situation anymore, Jeremy quietly exits the car into the dark northern california night. He walks down the road and sees a cabin with a light on. He makes his way to the entrance, where he's startled by a purring cat. He then hears a voice of older woman through the door. Jeremy tells her that he left a car with a drunk driver who ran out of gas. She tells him that she doesnt have a phone but he should come in. She opens the door and reveals herself. A kind looking woman in her early 60's, she welcomes him in.
She tells him her name is Cynthia and offers him a drink. She brings him some whiskey and tells him it was her late husbands who died when a drunk driver hit him on his morning walk. That's why she doesn't drive anymore. Cynthia explains that to Jeremy that he'll have to stay the night and hitch into the town in the morning. He's stuck but doesn't mind. They have a rather intimate conversation around a fire for a couple hours. She shows him to a dusty old guest room that Jeremy finds rather comfortable.
In the morning Jeremy wakes up to the sounds of Cynthia humming. He walks down the hallway and into the kitchen where she is making breakfast. She gives him so oatmeal. Jeremy tells her how grateful he is for having him and that its the first time he's felt calm in a long time. He's really comfortable with her. Cynthia tells Jeremy that if he's that comfortable with her that maybe he'll understand what she has in the freezer..............
You'll have to wait to find out the ending :)
We will try to bring this to life over a three day shoot at the end of April. I hope to use this project to explore themes of how lonely we are even in an increasingly connected world. Moreover, I also hope to look at how generational and age differences are becoming less rigid than in the past.
Risks and challenges
After the project is funded we will be shooting at Canyon Film Ranch in Thousand Oaks about 30 minutes outside of LA.
We could face challenges when dealing with a filming clause in ventura county. After 12a, you are charged hourly to shoot. If we are unable to finish the night driving shots at that time there could be a financial issue. I've made a shot list that should be able to get these shots in the 5 hours of night before that.
There's a backup plan of shooting at a couple of the airbnb places we have circled in case we don't generate enough funds to shoot three days at Canyon Film Ranch.
The film is going to be shot on the Canon 5D Mark 3 which needs even more light than film cameras so its tough to shoot at night. Cine power and light is giving us a great deal on a kit. If its not enough there could be some lighting issues. I have several backup scenarios (ill tell you about the home depot trick if you ask) :)
Any other questions, inputs, or concerns please let me know. I'll be happy to discuss!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
