With his 2010 “Americas Got Talent” victory and a subsequent “Epic Records” recording contract behind him, Michael is resurfacing with his latest and best material to date, but this time Michael is dedicated to his fans and his own musical direction and desires! With the fame brought on by 4 million voting fans the perceived success for Michael was overwhelming! With all of America discovering the talent of Michael Grimm, it was inevitable that America’s corporate recording industry would also catch wind of his soulful voice and bluesy approach. With all good intentions, Michael’s talent started to get lost in the conflicting agendas of the corporate record companies and the big machine management style that had his musical style locked down to a specific path, and not necessarily the path that he wanted to be on. Michael’s musical direction and desire to create a more eclectic and diverse project was put on hold and all but lost in the shuffle of the big machine.
It was Christmas day, 2013 that my long time friends, Michael and Lucie Grimm, came to my home to spend the evening playing music and getting caught up after being out of contact for several years. Although I had followed Grimm’s career very closely with both of us playing very different show schedules, our contact faded; life took its toll on our ability to just hang out. On this festive day, with a cheap acoustic guitar, an out of tune piano, spoons & forks, a book (used as a drum), a wine glass as a cymbal, and our families gathered around laughing and singing, Michael and I made music for the first time in longer than I care to remember, it was a blast.
Just prior to re-connecting with Michael I started to convert my studio, which was used primarily for videography, into a functional music recording studio. So, while the family polished off the wine, Michael and I took a walk out to the studio to look at my handy work and there was an instant energy. Michael made the statement that the studio had the creative comfort that he was looking for. I thought, what an honor it would be to record Michael’s next record here, but I knew the studio was in no shape for a full-blown musical record project, but it was something I could work towards.
I started to make a list of what I would need to make the studio work for this project; thousands of dollars in equipment, computers, microphones, plug-ins, and programs and some fairly heavy remodeling in the studio. Once this list was made, I realized the only thing missing, after spending my life savings on gear, was knowledge! I didn’t know what the hell I was doing, I am a drummer not an engineer! Well I started to save my money, and research what I would need for the project.
Fast forward to April 2014 when I met Drew Masterpole, I discovered that Drew was (is) a degree holding audio engineer with extensive experience in the big studios in and around the Los Angeles area, and now Drew was looking for a studio to bestow his talents on in the Las Vegas area. What happened was the completion of the tri-fecta that would allow three friends to join forces and create music at our own pace with complete creative control, what a novel thought. With Drew on board, I made the call to Michael Grimm and told him the studio is complete. The gear is installed and I have the knowledge (in the form of Drew Masterpole “genius” ) to move forward. Studio 824 was now a fully functioning professional audio recording studio and a licensed “Record Label”. Studio 824 is looking to produce the best product possible in our own recording space, pay the bills and maybe try to eat, if there’s anything left after the project is funded.
This is where you - the fans come in. Studio 824 and Grimm have turned down major investors for this project because we don’t want to give up creative control on this or any other project. Instead, we are asking the fans to “buy in” to our projects in the form of pre-sales, starting with the Michael Grimm project. Studio 824 is designing some outstanding incentives at all levels, but mostly we are about to produce the kick ass record that Michael Grimm has been designing and building his entire career! We are looking to the fans to be the investors, to pay for the project as we go, to be a part of the reason that music exists in the first place; gratification in creation and in end user enjoyment! Be a part of Studio 824 and the Michael Grimm Project and thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
Because the studio is complete, we have not taken any investors in the building of this studio, it is debt free and we are able to move forward with this project, it will be finished! Because Drew, Michael and Jamie are currently performing and putting together the new band "Grimm" the biggest challenge is only time. With a projected completion date of March/April the release date and CD release celebration in May is very achievable. Risks and Challenges in this project are very manageable.
The good news is studio time is not an issue, Studio 824 is home to the Grimm Project with no ticking clock. We are bringing in some very talented musicians to play on this record and top professional to be involved in the mastering and final mixing of the project. the media will be involved with interviews and publicity and we are also filming a documentary of this project, as a part of the incentives for the fans that buy in as an owner of the project. This documentary is not available in stores, it is specifically for the Kick-Starter program and pre-sales participants.
This project is for the fans so any potential overage goes toward the end project, including the musicians, technicians, equipment, and final production to include material costs, filming and funding the cd release party in May of 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
