About this project
Hello! My name is Frank Dietz and I love monster movies. The very first film I can remember seeing was ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, when I was only about 6 six years old. That film had a profound impact on me, and would eventually steer me towards a career in the motion picture industry.
Over the years I’ve been an actor in some infamous cult films, a screenwriter, an artist for Walt Disney Animation, and recently an award-wining filmmaker. But what I’m probably best known for is my classic horror movie illustrations.
For many years I published a series of sketchbooks showcasing these drawings. The first one, titled Things Are A Bit Sketchy, was a collection of pen and ink caricatures of the classic Universal Monsters and their co-stars. My intention was to bring a smile to the faces of those who loved these films as much as I did. The response from fans was overwhelming, and before I knew it, that first volume had sold out. That lead to a second edition, this time the caricatures were rendered in pencils. That technique became my signature style, which lead to commissions and magazine work and convention appearances. Five more volumes of Sketchy Things followed, the final one in 2007, and all of them are now out of print.
The sketchbooks stopped, but the sketches did not. Since then I have finished hundreds more drawings and paintings, most of them unpublished. And recently, I’ve received a lot of inquires about the old Sketchy Things books, so I’ve decided to publish a deluxe “Best Of” edition. This new book will feature my favorite pieces from the original books, as well as a lot of newer works.
It’s called “Sketchy Things: The Art of Frank Dietz” and it will be a professionally produced 140 pages of both black & white and color work. It will include all of our favorite creatures and characters from horror, sci-fi and fantasy cinema, presented through my own unique perspective.
This Kickstarter campaign will allow me to have the book composed by a professional layout artist, and cover the cost of printing. As a reward for your support, you will receive a signed first edition of the book, before it goes on sale to the public at conventions and through Amazon. I am also offering signed prints and original sketches to those who wish to provide greater support.
This book has been a long time dream of mine. I hope you can join me in seeing it become a reality, and very soon be holding your very own copy in your hands, and smiling at what you see inside.
Risks and challenges
Time will be required to complete the layout of the book. I will be hiring a professional layout person to make the book look amazing, and present my artwork as close to it's original quality as possible. Time will also be a factor in delivery of the finished product, as both the printing and packaging of the book are processes that require testing. If all goes correctly, delivery of the finished book should be around May of 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
